They finally got it right.

There where many attempts to bring the comic book superhero known hasCaptain America in to live action, including the abomination one from1990. Now I had my doubts about Chris Evans playing the title role, Ifelt he would have been miscast like Ryan Reynolds was in GreenLantern. The story begins during the time of World War 2, and SteveRodgers(Chris Evans) wants to a soldier, and fight for his country, buthe is short and skinny, and considered to weak to be a soldier. ButSteve catches the attention of a German scientist(Stanley Tucci) whoadmires Steves determination, and asks would he be apart of anexperiment, that would make him into super soldier. Steve agrees andbecomes Captain America. And discovers he has an enemy to stop knownhas The Red Skull(Hugo Weaving). The version was done right, forgot those other versions of CaptainAmerica, this one did everything correctly. Chris Evans surprised me,his performance was decent, showed a lot of strength and vulnerability. The action scenes where beyond incredible. Hugo Weaving a great RedSkull. Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, and Hayley Atwell where alsogood. Please don't miss this one.

A setup for a sequel, not much more

Captain America is reasonably well acted. Set in the 1940s, there isnot much firepower around, so the fight between CA and his nemesis feelvery much like a bar brawl. The story is not entirely plausible attimes, for instance when a bunch of super-weapons captured from theenemy with the help of CA are not used against that enemy in laterbattles, or in the final scene when a radio becomes the plot device toprepare for the inevitable sequel. In many ways, this movie feels like it was designed to build theexpectations for a sequel that presumably will feature a stronger plotand a modern day nemesis with more heat at his disposal. I'd suggestwaiting until that sequel comes out and grabbing a cheap copy of thismovie then. This movie just doesn't have enough plot on its own.

A nice ride...

I saw Cap @ the midnight showing. Admittedly, I am a comic book fan,but not a Captain America fan. He was always hokey to me. I wasn't evena real fan of the Avengers. That said, all these movies have been awesome. And CA is no exception. These guys have done an outstanding job of taking material that couldeasily have been tired & corny, & making in entertaining & funny. Thecharacters take themselves seriously, but are clearly having fun withit. That is a delicate balance that Green Lantern missed. What has madeso many of the recent comic book movies good is they've had seriousdirectors & serious actors playing the parts. They take the craftseriously. That has given these stories a credibility they lacked inthe past. Captain America had a chance to be as bad as Green Latern, soI was worried. If they didn't do it right, it could have been horrible. Chris Evans does a great job. He is so believable as the endearinglittle guy who wont give up. You don't feel sorry for him, because HEdoesn't. His life mantra isn't "pity me." It's more, "Yea, I may lose, but not without a fight!" He has heart you cant deny. So seeing what hebecomes & what he does with it... You're actually happy for him.Tommy Lee Jones is at his typical straight-faced wisecracker best. Ifthere has been a better actor at being absolutely hilarious whileconstantly looking like his dog, cat, & wife just died, I'd like toknow who. His delivery is so awesome.

Can relate

I've been waiting for Captain America to come out so they can all geton with it, so we can finally get to the Avengers movie, but I have toadmit, I really liked it. I think I fell in love with the lead girlimmediately and probably because she liked Captain America a littleeven before he was big and buff. I related to Captain America as a kid.I'm not from Brooklyn, I'm a Texan, BIG DIFFERENCE! But I still couldrelate. I was a scrapper kid who never developed much like a lot of myfriends, but I always gave it my best shot. I didn't know the historyof the comic book, and that Captain America was a skinny little runt atfirst, and a product of a science lab. Seems like Steroids been aroundfor longer than Schwarzenegger, and all this time I thought he wastheir poster child. I was wrong. It was Captain America! He was theoriginal lab rat. Just the same, really liked the movie, especially thefirst act. Enjoyed the evolution of the super hero, the action in lateracts was okay too.

A Fun Ride That's Worthy of All The Praise! Bring On The Avengers!

Captain America is a very very good film. I firmly believe that thischaracter is the very toughest to bring to life in the Marvel stablesimply because of his complexity. They did a fairly nice job keeping itsimple but remembering to do so with heart. The film features a nicepace, the perfect cast and wonderful throwback action sequences. Itdoes have its flaws but not enough to sink the film by any means.Overall, it's a fun ride that respectfully delivers a movie worthy ofthe legend and sets up for what could be amazing sequels and what willbe an awesome Avengers film. The Good The cast is remarkable and every single character played to perfection. Tommy Lee Jones simply stole every scene he was in and his characterhad the audience in the palm of his hand. Best audience reactionsthroughout the entire film.Cap's wartime real costume, look and shield work is amazing. It's rightout of the books. The same can be said of the Red Skull's look. The brutality was not only welcome but needed. It grounded the film andmade everything play out in a more real world tone with realconsequences. The body count in this film is surprisingly high. The film had true heart because they made Steve relatable and youinstantly rooted for him and wanted to follow his path to glory. Thepre-serum 98lb weakling Steve is not only an amazing CGI feat butperfectly hooks the audience.A story featuring a true hero is so refreshing at this point. No darkbrooding and moody anti-hero here…The story itself is told with a very nice pace and in a crisp manner.Nothing drags at all. The dialogue is witty and the humor works its way seamlessly in to thenatural order of the story. The tone and period work is dead on perfect. I loved the flavor of thisfilm when the focus was not on anything Hydra. The Bad I really wish they had stayed entirely Nazi and left the Hydra elementout, laser guns and all. Having no "learning curve" hurt the overall film as well. What alwaysworks in origin films is having the hero learn and come to grips withhis new powers or abilities. Iron Man and Spider-Man are prime perfectexamples. I enjoyed Steve's initial use of powers because circumstancesdemanded it but they never showed him training or learning combattechniques at all. That's a terrible oversight, especially since thecharacter is known as the world's greatest hand to hand fighter interms of the Marvel Universe. I would've liked to have seen more background on Steve as acharacter... growing up without a father and mother during theDepression era and the building of his ethical and moral code. Overall: A great film that is one of the year's best and oh so close tobeing perfection. Wonderful job by all involved.

Script Failure Hurts an Already Uninteresting Superhero

Superman came from Krypton. Thor came from Valhalla. Batman was atleast quite wealthy. Captain America: The First Avenger – he's aBrooklyn kid born and raised. World War II has broken out and all ablebodied men are accepting their patriotic duty and volunteering for themilitary; everyone except for Mr. Steve Rogers of course. Thepre-Captain America is a 90 pound nothing with asthma. He even trieslying on his enlistment papers but with no success.Obviously, the kid eventually gets in lest there be no film. His pureheart of gold gets noticed by a top scientist (Stanley Tucci) and BOOMhe is now the superhero with the worst uniform of them all, CaptainAmerica. What kept gnawing at me as I was watching the film is thatCaptain America as a person and as a superhero is rather average, notnecessarily boring, but definitely on the uninteresting end of thespectrum. There is no anguish or emotional torment which many othersuperheroes endure. There is no single force which is his foe alakryptonite. There is just a very physically fit guy who expertly flingshis shield at the bad dudes.Speaking of the bad dudes, Nazis always have and always will makefantastic villains. Nobody is ever pulling for the Nazis to win orsympathizes with them. They really do make the perfect antagonists.Hugo Weaving turns out to be Captain America's alter ego and has avague resemblance to Hellboy who also happens to get his start in WorldWar II but is a bit of an anti-superhero in comparison. Two otherthings also work well in this film which is the Colonel played by TommyLee Jones and Captain America's romantic interest in Agent Carter(Hayley Atwell). Tommy Lee Jones is a great choice to play a grizzledand annoyed person no matter what the film is about.Unfortunately, the awesome Mr. Jones cannot save a lackluster scriptwhich includes an awkward showbiz interlude early on in CaptainAmerica's career and somewhat repetitive fight sequences. This wholefilm appears to be a setup for next year's The Avengers but as aprequel for that, it does not set the bar too high.

Entertainment.

This was an enjoyable movie, although rather frustrating at times. Itcould have been great but doesn't really come close. I have a theorythat most movies can be improved by cutting them down, but I don't likecensorship. The great ones, however, are best left untouched. This onehas so many unnecessary clichés. Men in coats randomly turning knobs, arrogant army-people, weak people stereotypes, relationshipstereotypes. But really, the problem is the *cinematic* clichés. Theway these sequences and ideas are filmed the same way they've alwaysbeen made as if it's the only possible way.The movie got more interesting when it poked fun at (or satirised orwhatever) 1940's American war propaganda. Still, Superman seems more ofthe squeaky-clean all-American hero, giving friendly tips and speechesafter each rescue. Captain America is not as noble or as much of aleader. He's a good guy who was given powers and who takes ages tofigure out he should use them. He never questions the process. Aclassic quality of a hero is that they never choose power.Chris Evans is likable and convincing I reckon but seriously, all these"hot" celebrities playing "ugly" or "weak" is weird. Guess they didn'thave a choice. But Steve Rogers could have been one of the mostinteresting movie characters ever. The thing is, I think people withhis level of dedication and who have been through all those beatingsdevelop a high level of discipline and end up strong. Especiallypsychologically but also physically. They're kind because they know howit feels to be hurt. Usually, to be really stereotypical, the bigstrong guys are soft on the inside while the small guys are really edgyand aggressive. This movie basically supports steroids. You know, it's so importantthat we care about this guy, that we believe he's good-hearted and thenthey just give him strength and he's like "cool beans". Hugo Weavingwas cool as the villain, strange accent, a little like Arnie at timesbut certainly pretty unique and memorable. Shame the role's so one-dimensional. He likes playing mysterious masked/scarred people. As a popcorn accompaniment, this is plenty good. The action wasn'tamazing but was consistently good and fun to watch. I liked the overallstyle, like some forgotten time and place. Also hilarious how they hadbetter technology 70 years ago than now, I didn't realise that. And howlove sprouts so rapidly. Plenty to like and plenty to be like "why?".His shield was awesome :)

xerox could have done a better job

The only reason this movie ended up with more as 1 star is because somehardcore nationalist Hollywood lovers didn't write honest reviews.Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against remakes nor Hollywood, butthis is just uninspired crap. I like any kind of movies. But moviesought to be made by people who enjoy making them, they should beskilled. Willing to put effort in making a good movie. This guy isallowed to make movies because he is from a rich influential family.Joe Johnston must be one of the least talented directors these days.None of his work is original and all of his movies are cheap copies.this is the same, he saw a movie. Liked it, but just didn't understandit. it doesn't even come close to the original. Everything is justworse as the original Mr India. Camera work, story (that doesn't workout anymore) de fighting is lame, making it not offending for theAmerican audience by cutting out the superhero power of invisiblitytotally destroyed the story. The actor had to be a pretty face, too badhe didn't have acting skills with it. This untalented directorshouldn't even be allowed to sell pop-corn in a cinema. Too bad mom anddad had money.Johnston has a solid resume built on making these safe, PG-13commercials for kids. He's perfect for Marvel and their toy commer...Imean..."movies" Its a direct insult to the real Mr India, and Mr.Johnston didn't even pay for the rights to rip it. Please don't watchit, get Mr India instead. This one will only make you vomit But stillwho like the movies like Memento, Shwashank Redemption shall watch thisone.

DO YOU FONDUE?

The movie starts at its WWII origins. Chris Evans plays Steve Rogers a puny 4F man who has lied his way into a military science experiment. Tommy Lee Jones plays an excellent Colonel. Meanwhile evil Nazi Hugo Weaving believing he is Darth Maul, has his own plans for world conquest using sharks with frickin' laser beams. (Just kidding about the sharks.) Rogers is a 90 pound weakling who displays intellect, courage, and guts. He is selected for the military's secret program and is transformed into a muscular super hero. The special effects were very good, although we do know from "Last Action Hero" you can't really jump around car roofs. After Rogers is transformed he becomes Captain America to be used as a recruiting tool, as Tommy Lee still has his doubts about the 90 pound weakling. Of course things change and the rest of the story shouldn't be too hard to figure out, even if you don't read comics. Now the very end utilizes the one-eyed Samuel L. Jackson from Iron Man 2 which hints at an ultimate sequel providing everyone isn't dead by then. The movie combines action, drama, light comedy, and light romance. Good acting, good dialouge, good frickin' laser beams. No swearing, nudity, or sex. Safe to drop off the kids.

With a nice cast, exciting action scenes, and a retro visual vibe, Captain America is the funnest movie of the Summer.

As I walked out of Captain America: The First Avenger, I felt thegleeful aftermath of a truly great popcorn flick. It's safe to say thatCaptain America is THE most fun I've had with ANY 2011 movie I've seen, thus far.Chris Evans stars as Steve Rogers, a true patriot if there ever was onein the 1940's. Though he has the selflessness and bravery of a hundredmen, he's forbidden to join the armies of World War II due to his 90pound body frame. But, with the help of a caring Scientist namedAbraham Erskine (Played by Stanley Tucci), he's recruited for a specialsuper soldier infantry, and through the power of science, successfullygoes through an experiment that gives him the muscles to match hisheroic spirit. But, trouble arises when the USA are facing a threatfrom an underground organization known as HYDRA, lead by a disfiguredNazi named Johann Schmidt (Played with hissing intimidation by HugoWeaving). Growing tired of his celebrity status, Rogers decides thatit's time to take action, and fight the good fight. Captain America isborn. It's not often when visual effects designer turned director JoeJohnston makes a good movie, let alone something as great as CaptainAmerica. The movie is a refreshing return to a retro vibe not seen ofJohnston since The Rocketeer. He and screenwriters Christopher Markusand Stephen McFeely manage a consistent tone, and never make theexciting action sequences feel like they're one too many.As you would expect, Johnston's tech crew have crafted the film verywell. Mainly through stylized, but era appropriate sets by RickHeinrichs. Costumes specific to character and mood by Anna Sheppard. Anexciting, and glorious return to past form for composer Alan Silvestri. And last but not least, prosthetic makeup of Red Skull by Lisa Westcottthat is so good, it's scary. As for the cast, Chris Evans is especially of notice. Steve Rogers is ahighly likable character from the beginning. He never does anything tomake us dislike him, and though that threatens to make him feel onenote at times, Evans has no problem with keeping the character feelingfresh, a highly beneficial trait. Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving aredelightful in their roles of Col. Chester Philips and Johann Schmidt(aka. Red Skull), and the beautiful Hayley Atwell gives it her all asRogers' love interest, Peggy Carter. It's not always perfect, but the film also features some reallyexceptional scenes. A daring raid on the HYDRA facilities, aclaustrophobic tussle within the confines of a train, and an amusinglycreative musical montage of Captain America's celebrity status, set tothe original song "Star Spangled Man" with lyrics by David Zippel, andmusic by the LEGENDARY Alan Menken. The movie is a pleasant addition to what has been a surprisingly goodSummer. Certainly better than last year's. So I hope just as manypeople going off to see Potter's final bow, or the Transformers' finalwar will pay just as much attention to Captain America. Before I sign off, I must note two things. My rating, which is ***1/2out of **** Also, I must remind you to stay for a special scene afterthe end credits, which then leads into a teaser for the upcoming movie,The Avengers, due out in the Summer of next year. If you walk outbefore that, you're missing too much. My anticipation for the film isnow at an all time high, and I can't wait to see it.

Definitely the worst Marvel out there

I do try to watch all movies to the end. This one I could not. I knowits Captain "America" (or more accurately Captain U.S. of the same).Still, too much is too much. I acknowledge that this movie is inZeitgeist and showing no "Nazi" faces, only masks. Still, killing offanyone who doesn't speak English in a WWII movie is long forgone. That's just for my personal interests. For the everyday-audience-flaws: Just wtf? Firstly, if CA was a dwarfb4 becoming the mean machine, please depict him as such and not justshrink the image. No small person looks like this. Secondly, the labs, weapons and such. there heave been numerous films overstating what theGermans could do in WWII. But what with all the black light? The lab ofthe "Hydra" looks more sophisticated than what NASA could do in 50years from now). For the rest: gotta go, whats yourselves

Honestly? We've seen all of this before

When I watched this movie, many thoughts came to my mind, oneparticular was life is too short, so I stood up and walked out thecinema. After all, I had already seen this film when it was called "Mr.India" (1987) What is the point of re-making this movie? The cast isawful, The scenery is dreary, and there is no plot in this movie. Please do not say this movie is great, as the directors have onlysubstituted one line in the whole screenplay: the title page. They havechanged "Mr. India" into "Captain America".Besides this, like all science fiction movies produced by America, suchas Spider Man, super man, bat man etc. These movies show the Americanman as a superhero man. He always appears as the undefeated man. Ibelieve that these movies have addressed a political message for theinterest of America. The message is to intimidate its enemies. Themessage has become insisting especially having failed in its war onIraq. America finds no any other alternative way to intimidate theworld but by producing such ridiculous fiction movies. I believe thatsuch movies only find success in the States. Watching such fictionmovies and seeing that his dreams come true the American man feelssatisfied.

Once more into the breech, dear super-heroes

Of all the super-heroes bounding out of Hollywood at an ever-increasingrate, none is more quintessentially stars-and-stripes than CaptainAmerica (can you imagine a Captain Britain or a Captain Russia?).Unlike Superman or Thor, his powers do not emanate from another worldbut from our own scientists. Unlike Superman (Metropolis) or Batman(Gotham City), his locale is not a fictional city at an indeterminatetime, but the United States and Europe during the Second World War. Sothis is a mixture of "Raiders Of the Lost Ark" and "InglouriousBasterds" with lots of allusions to "Star Wars".Original, it ain't. But it's visually impressive and lots of fun. Like"Thor", it was converted to 3D in post-production but, unlike "Thor", Ichose to see it in 2D and, by all accounts, lost little. Taking the eponymous role is Chris Evans who is no newcomer tosuper-hero movies, having starred in the two "Fantastic Four" films. Some clever visual effects - there were no less than 1,600 in the movie- make him much smaller and thinner at the beginning and beef him upbig time after a huge surge of electricity, the staple ingredient ofall transformations since Frankenstein. Poor Hugo Weaving always seemsto be the bad guy (remember "The Matrix"?) and here looks suitablydevilish as Red Skull, the leader of Hydra. It's always a delight tosee Tommy Lee Jones who has some of the best lines and it was welcometo see a competent female character as portrayed by English actressHayley Atwell (whom British viewers may know from the TV mini-series"The Pillars Of The Earth"). If Captain America was the first avenger, be assured that he will notbe alone for much longer. He will be joined by Thor, Iron Man andothers in the forthcoming movie "The Avengers" which is the subject ofmini trailer at the conclusion of the credits.

Marvelless

This is utter drivel. It reminds me of green hornet, which was up tillnow the worst comic book movie of 2011. This however sets a whole newstandard and might be a contender for worst professional productionwith a serious budget, ever. It is impossible to assess whether thecharacters or the cardboard cutout decors are the thinnest. ArnoldSchwarzenegger was frankly a more credible actor in Red Sonia and theConan movies then the cast of this misbegotten drama. Sebastian Stanproves that none of the Gossip Girl cast can act, and Tommy Lee Jonesphones in his performance in order to stay within shouting distance ofthe rest. Summing it up: there is nothing to the story, the acting is ajoke, photography and FX suck. If the cinema charged me per movie I'dsue it.

Over ambitious, sprawled out yarn

STAR RATING: ***** Saturday Night **** Friday Night *** Friday Morning** Sunday Night * Monday Morning Steve Rogers (Chris Evans-a nerdy TV personality over here) is ascrawny, unmasculine weakling who wants to be big and strong so he canfight for his country in the Second World War. His prayers appear to beanswered when a German scientist (Stanley Tucci) invites him to be hisguinea pig on a new serum that induces super strength, which provessuccessful and he becomes Captain America, a force for good andstrength during America's dark days. But he faces his greatest nemesisin the shape of Captain Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving) a mad Nazi whoplots to mis-use the serum and even becomes his even more twisted alterego, Red Skull.Superhero movies are a pretty reliable and consistent money spinner forthe studios, with a pretty loyal, solid fan base who can always berelied on to pack the theatres out on opening weekends and get the boxoffice coffers spinning. It would take some pretty lousy reviews andtest screenings to have a really big impact on their chances in theseregards, and Joe Johnston's latest, big budget effects bonanza wouldappear to have escaped this fate. But if more of the reviewers had beenlike me, maybe that wouldn't have been the case. The superhero genre is still a fairly successful, winning one thatchurns out a lot of successes and still has a lot of potential, butwhile Captain America might have generally won favour with theaudiences and critics, I found it to be an over ambitious, over longand over blown misfire, which appears to have ended at least threetimes but carries on, dragging the story on and playing out in amispaced style, the end effect of which is just one big bore that allthe big action set pieces and effects in the world can't put right.Performances wise, Evans makes for a fairly standard, unmemorable hero, while the best thing is probably Weaving as the villain, doing hisusual steely eyed, uncompassionate thing to the best effect he can.Tommy Lee Jones in a supporting role is as reliable as ever, but hardlyhas the best material to work with and doesn't get the best screentime. Samuel L. Jackson makes a cameo appearance at the end, by whichtime his appearance feels as desperate as the movies become. It seems an inevitability that a sequel will emerge in a couple ofyears or so, bigger, better and maybe with a different director. Andmaybe I'll think it's better. I hope it couldn't be worse than this. **

Really ignorant and too logical reviewers for this movie...

Let me first start off by laughing my ass off...HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA *wipestears* Firstly, if you don't understand the premise of this movie andmany of the elements associated with it you look very very ignorant.Get it? STUPID.If you don't know what Hydra is and where it comes from then you'remissing half of what the movie, the enemy side, is about, period. Sounless you do, cause the movie doesn't explain every little detail tomake you happy, then don't comment.Hydra makes the bombs, the planes, the laser guns, the huge tanks andeverything else possible. I won't spoil how they are able to achievethis when US clearly doesn't have any clue. This is actually aforeshadow but most of you ignorant fools took it like it was a lamemovie set. HAHAHAHA Captain America has 100% of what human is should becapable of. He appears invulnerable because he can do things that areleaps and bounds from our human evolution. He is the only one. Again,if you don't get this you won't appreciate the dangers he has come outof. I mean seriously, when Bucky fell he even said he can't get drunkbecause he just can't. it also means he heals fast by the way.The movie is more of the evolution of Captain America, from his suitand shield all the way the the new shiny Vibranium shield. Did you guyseven get that? I highly doubt it :) The funniest part about aboutcomments is that I barely know Captain American and his background andI was quite alright with the movie. Granted, those that sh*t cluelessabout him in the first place should NOT be posting their comments andmaking such ignorant statements. Maybe do a little Google researchbefore mouthing off and making a fool out of yourself, including thosethat deemed themselves "fans" or know something about Cap, which theydon't :) Here's my recommendation for you ignorant fools that aremaking these types of comments about a good movie, go and watch thecartoon of the Avengers, all 3 of them. They'll give you some clue asto what the movie is about. HAHAHAHHAHAHA I cannot stop,HAHAHAHHAHAHHHA

just when i was having the best time of my life seeing all marvelcharacters coming to life on big screen such as thor i rated 10 out of10. then this comes alone i had all the hopes that this will be anothergreat movie until the end but still puzzled did i went to the rightscreen. reality pulled me out from daze then it turned in to anger whothe hell directed and financed this movie i started mumbling to myselfi think every one though i was a mental case out on a day release.honestly who the hell financed and made this pile of xxxx lol. i meanit had one of the few greatest actors of our time we all know it hadone of the best superhero story told in 50 years what went wrong. itell you what did directing specially on action scenes is felt cold nosuspense trough the film. cgi sucked all in all early versions ofcaptain America was far more superior to this i felt cheated as i didwith George Lucas last 3 star wars they should have never been made assuch as this. i have to tell you that i rated this high due to fact ilove the acting of tommy lee Jones . Stanley tucci . Hugo weaving butthere is only so much they can do it was not enough to save this film

So this is Captain America...

I saw a midnight screening of this movie and i walked in with highhopes. I like Chris Evans and so far the other Marvel movies that havebeen released to lead up to the Avengers movie, have been pretty welldone. No movie is perfect, but this movie had so much hype, that it had tobe...but i (as much as many others) kinda got disappointed. *SPOILERSSSSSS* The scenes in the movie kinda looked like they were put together alittle sloppy. One scene didn't add up to the other, but you got thehint on what was going on. Also the ending was rather weak. The lastline in the movie "I had a date", then credits roll...that's not a wayto end a superhero movie let alone Captain America.Good things, well the acting was great. The jokes were always spot onand the action was pretty well laid out.Captain America was all around a good movie, i was just sitting at theend of the movie a little disappointed and confused. 7/10

A Super-hero Rightly Interpreted for the Big Screen

Like many comic-book fans I was expecting the worst from this movie. This is not because the character has any less depth than othersuper-heroes, but I knew that it would be extremely difficult totransition Steve Rogers to film in a serviceable way. The guy is called"Captain America" for heaven's sake.Any comic-book reader would probably appreciate the ironies andidiosyncrasies behind such ostentatiously patriotic code-name, mostlybecause in print Cap has challenged the assumptions behind hissymbolism, becoming a more conflicted and universal figure. But its hard to translate any of this idiosyncrasy successfully in 2hours. Fortunately the film, instead of getting to political, is moreold-fashioned pulp like Indy or "Sky Captain," which thankfully nevertakes itself too seriously (which was one of the flaws of "Thor").I had my doubts that Chris Evans could pull off the modesty and heartneeded for the role, but I was wrong. As the Red Skull, Hugo Weavingwas wonderfully evil in a nostalgic, serial-villain kind of way. HaleyAtwell is a sidekick/love-interest with the rare quality of not beingincredibly annoying, and Tommy Lee Jones is perfectly cast as Tommy LeeJones. The reason I found this to be a good movie was because I enjoyed it,plain and simple. It's well-photographed and well-acted. Like itstitular hero, it modestly embraced its silliness, creating a charmingB-movie experience.

An Amazing Movie! As Good As Everyone is Saying

You can rest assured that Captain America is an absolutely amazingmovie. I'm so glad Marvel got in to the solo movie making business.Instead of leasing out their characters to other studios, they'remaking movies themselves and have not missed yet. Cap may very well betheir best effort! This movie really takes the comic book genre to thehighest level. It reinvents epic adventure of "Marvelizing" charactersby making them more believable and more relatable. Spider-Man and theX-Men did this to a degree but only as far as their respective studioswished to stay true to the source material. Anything added or amendedwas for the benefit of the live action adaptation. Director Sam Raimipulled this off by talking to the summer crowd, not down to them withthe Spider-Man series. Jon Favreau did the same thing here but maybeeven better with Iron Man. Now, Joe Johnson continues that tone butadds an old time movie flare which is exactly what the character callsfor. He also adds nice bits of humor but not too much. Like the greatfilms of the past, he grounds the action and the concept of a "supersoldier" in firm reality. I've said it before but it's brave to reachfor the highest common denominator with a big budget film and CaptainAmerica delivers a movie with as much feeling as it has action andintensity. It's a movie that has a wonderful balance that deliversintelligence with its fun. This is, without a doubt going to be one ofmy top 10 movies of 2011, quite possibly the number one film. The in-your-face action is paced by the plot and characters that keepyou interested from start to amazing finish and this movie perfectlyleads in to next years event film, The Avengers. I hope everyone stayedfor the after credits treat!
