terrible for children

I was very surprised by the amount of automobile "deaths" and threat of "deaths" in the film. This is violent and terrible to show a 4 year old and having to explain about the good cars versus the bad cars. Please don't watch this movie if you care about your young ones.

Bad!

This animated film is neither for children nor for adults. Badscreenplay, violent, cliché till extreme, this film is the completeconfusion. It's too long, boring and pointless 3D CG cartoon. Mysix-year old daughter asked me to leave the cinema, because she wasbored. Decline of Pixar in the quality screenplay began withRatatouille, through UP and Toy Story 3, the fall turned into thenosedive with this one. To say this is the bad movie is a compliment. The concept of a spy movie like a 007, which itself is outdated, hastotally missed the target for the younger viewers, who expect humor, joy and laughter. These three things you will not find in this film.Save your money. Save your time. Save your kids.

A HUGE Dissapointment

As a family that watches the original Cars movie almost on a weekly basis we were HUGELY disappointed in Cars 2. It was so bad, my kids won't even watch it through to the end of the movie. Don't waste your money on this one :(

Cars 2 The sequel to Pixar's success movie about one car's journey toachieve his dreams follows the same premise; however it's Mater turn inthe fast lane, this time. When Lightning McQueen brings his best friendalong to a world cup racing championship, based in Tokyo, Mater findshimself caught up in serious matters concerning spy cars and terrorismon an international level. What turns out to be a series of potentiallydeadly situations throws Mater into a fast-paced world of secrecy, gadgets, guns, disguises and heroics. It's James Bond meets theoriginal Cars, in this film packed with racing, romance and rendezvous.A fun flick for the whole family to enjoy!

I don't know why the people expected more of Cars 2

Cars was the worst Pixar movie ever, without imagination andcreativity. The plot is copied of "Michael J Fox - Dr Hollywood". Thedifference is that in one you have doctors an in the other cars. For meis boring ans slow once McQueen get lost in that forbidden town. youcan't get watermelons if you seed pineapples. Pixar did their firstgreat mistake (the first one was Bugs and the second is Cars), but thisone is silly and only searching for incomes instead to continue withthat way giving us mature stories as Up & Wall-E. They believe the kidsare stupid, but the best sequence in Pixar movies was the story of thecouple of UP. The kids really learned about life and death.

Way to violent and political. My family and i loved the first movie. We had high expectations and were very disappointed.

Good show: A simple review here

This review is from: Cars 2 (DVD) I think the biggest thing that comes along with any sequel is that people tend to tie it in and compare it to the first movie. Just as when moviegoers try to compare a movie to a book it was based on, they will often be disappointed. So I have taken the standpoint that when I see any movie, with any familiar actor, book tie ins, sequels or prequels, that I compare it strictly to itself and the experience of watching the movie. In other words: I stay open-minded, and refrain from expectations. So for me, this movie was a lot of fun!My 7-year old daughter was about 3 or 4 when she first saw the original Cars movie. So we own it and watched it the week before Cars 2 came out, to get "in the mood". Mind you we've seen Cars so many times, that we can both randomly quote lines verbatim. We also own the soundtrack and we can both tell you where each track is played in the movie, and know all the words. LOL. So trust me, we loved the first Cars movie. That being said... WE STILL LOVE THIS NEW MOVIE! It is adventurous (something a 7-10 year old appreciates), silly, still maintains the heart of the original characters, but gives a new exciting story line. I mean really, I'm sure some of you parents might also be tired of the original story at this point, and probably can appreciate a new movie concept that still has characters your child can identify with.Anyway, Cars 2 is very entertaining, and we will buy (we've had it on pre-order with Amazon for two months) it and we'll watch it repeatedly too. LOL. Unlike Toy Story 3 (my daughter owns the first two, and hated #3), which we won't be buying.

A fun, sleek and engaging film, it just lacks the Pixar heart

The Pixar library stands as modern animation's most impressive by far, partly due to both the studio and Disney's belief that sequels shouldonly be made with the right artistic reasons in mind, namely a goodstory. That's why, to date, we have just "Toy Story 2," "Toy Story 3"and ... "Cars 2" ... ? The original "Cars" has largely been considered the worst of the Pixarmovies, in the same way that Pluto might be considered the worst of thenine planets. So why create a sequel? The answer that's hard to hear isthat "Cars" has done incredible merchandising business compared to theother Pixar films. The less cynical answer would be that its director,Pixar head honcho and young boy at heart John Lasseter, loves the"Cars" universe — a lot. "Cars 2" plays out as a fantasy for a 6 to10-year-old boy, one that cares much more about sheen than story, despite Pixar consistently championing that phrase the other wayaround. In fairness, "Cars 2" does everything a sequel should in terms ofwidening the scope, upping the action and improving the overallvisuals. Pixar set the bar for technical mastery in digital animationand every animator and member of the production team meets thatstandard if not exceeds it. It's the story under the hood thatstruggles, choosing fun as its main objective as opposed to heart. And "Cars 2" has fun by the tankful. Lasseter, Brad Lewis and DanFogelman's story takes the "Cars" universe and throws "James Bond" intoit, a cocktail most definitely shaken and not stirred. The filmintroduces British secret agent cars Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) andHolly Shiftwell (Emily Mortimer) who are trying to find out what thedastardly Professor Z (Thomas Kretschmann) is up to at the World GrandPrix, a new race sponsored by Sir Miles Axelrod (Eddie Izzard), anadventurer who is now promoting his new alternative fuel source.Meanwhile, Lightning McQueen has been busy racing and winningchampionships when he finally returns to his old pal Mater (Larry theCable Guy) in Radiator Springs. It's a short vacation, however, asFormula 1 race car Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) has challengedMcQueen to the World Grand Prix. He accepts and brings Mater to Tokyowith him, where our secret agents believe Mater to be an American spyhelping them out. Most surprisingly, Lightning McQueen takes a back seat in to Mater inthis film. Agreed that Mater is one of the funnier supportingcharacters that Pixar has written and in this film he's equally if notmore hilarious, but McQueen's quest to be the best is completelyinconsequential. There's a moment, as is in just about every film wherethe message is about friendship, when he spurns Mater and then latertries to make amends, but it happens so early on. Any emotional impactthe film could have had is zapped thanks to this and the fact thatMcQueen has no bearing on the spy plot. The real problem with the story of "Cars 2" can ultimately beattributed to the fact that it does not necessitate being told in aworld where the characters are all cars and other vehicles. The samestory could have been told with human characters and nothing would havechanged. The car aspect serves only as the chance to be clever with anumber of car-related jokes and gadgetry. Disappointment will resonate with a lot of Pixar fans, yet the truth is"Cars 2" is such a well- oiled machine that it's much easier to discusswhat the film lacked than its strengths. The action, the wit, thecleverness and the impeccable visuals we've come to expect from Pixarmake it a first-rate animated film. However, we've also come to expectan emotional pull, the feeling of being on the verge of tears for evenjust a bit. "Cars 2" doesn't deliver that at all, nor the feeling ofartistic purpose. It feels like a studio making the best movie it couldwith the pieces it already had in place from its financial successful2006 film.At the same time, if "Cars 2" brings in enough money that it fundsanother three years of powerful, intelligent and emotional originalfilms like "Up," "Toy Story 3" and "WALL*E," I can deal with that.~Steven CVisit my site! moviemusereviews.com

Violent and lots of guns

I was so surprised at the violence in this movie. My son (and I) ADORED Cars 1, and are so disappointed in the sequel. This is not a movie for small children. I had to explain to my 5 year old, that Doc Hudson died, cars were murdered (in one scene you see the reflection of the murder while it is taking place), and cars were continually hurt or shot by other cars. The graphics are of the Pixar superior standard, it is the violent content that gets my 1 star rating.

Never gets out of second gear.

In the modern age, people typically associate the pre-conceived qualityof a film with its director or cast, but very rarely do entire studiosdevelop a similar reputation. Pixar is the best example of this, havingchurned out mostly excellent films that have forever changed the phrase'fun for the whole family' (once loosely translatable as 'a yawn-festfor anyone over five') and created movies that are designed for kids attheir most basic level, but can genuinely be enjoyed by people of allages. And while I wouldn't consider Cars 2 right up there with Pixar'sgreatest accomplishments, it isn't a total flop either.Having just won the Piston Cup, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) islooking forward to some down time in Radiator Springs. That is untilthe cocky Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) appears on television, proclaiming that he is the fastest racecar on the planet. An appeal tothe contrary by McQueen's best friend Mater (Larry the Cable Guy)sparks the first ever World Grand Prix. Intertwined within this storyis secret agen-err car, Finn McMissile (Michael Caine) who enlists thehelp of Mater to thwart the plans of the evil lemon cars, sick of beingthe laughing stock of the world. Character-wise, the most noticeable difference in Cars 2 from theoriginal is that Mater has made the jump to lead protagonist, whileMcQueen appears on occasion just to tie up the loose ends and advancethe plot. The entire secret agent story is fantastical and a far cryfrom the more intimate setting of the first film, although that isunlikely to phase the film's target market. I could have gone withoutit, and yet cutting it out completely turns Cars 2 into a forty-minuteTV special, as opposed to a feature-length presentation. So this isdefinitely a case of 'I don't know how to improve it, I just know Idon't like it.'I can understand applying the 'bigger is better' formula to such asequel, but the increased screen time enjoyed by Mater is actually adetriment, as a character that outlandish is best taken in small doses.Having said that, the film does its best to draw sympathy from theaudience in key scenes. We genuinely feel for Mater when his feelingsget hurt, but such heartfelt moments (that have become one of Pixar'sgreatest weapons) are unfortunately dealt with all too quickly, andswiftly pushed aside to make room for the next big set piece.Visual gags dominate the humour landscape of the film, which againshould come as no surprise considering whom the film is aimed at.Because the events of this movie occur all over the world, it allowsanimators to apply all sorts of racial stereotypes for a cheap laugh.McQueen's Italian rival talks in a thick, cheesy accent, is painted thesame colours as his national flag, and lists soccer as his favouritepastime. Comedy is not the film's strong suit, and generally fails todeliver any fresh material that may have otherwise made the film moreengaging for us older kids. Two minor areas in which Cars 2 falls flat are, ironically, two areasin which Pixar tends to excel. The film lacks a quality villain, onethat appears genuinely threatening and capable of instilling fear like, say, Toy Story 3's Lotso. Also, subtle in-jokes regarding the state ofpollution in the world, as well as the impending need to switch toalternative fuel feel uncharacteristically forced. Naturally, thesemoments are intended to fly right over a younger viewer's head, butthey felt like nothing more than a guilt-trip to me.Upon this film's release, many were inclined to argue that Pixar hasfinally sold out and produced a film solely for merchandising purposes. While this may be true to some extent, it's important to remember thatit is only lacklustre by Pixar's high standards, and could have beenfar more painful under a lesser studio's supervision. Sure, this sequeldoes no more than simply go through the motions for ninety minutes, butremains a bearable (albeit somewhat unfulfilling) experience.*There's nothing I love more than a bit of feedback, good or bad. Sodrop me a line on jnatsis@iprimus.com.au and let me know what youthought of my review.*

The first misstep for Pixar

I love Pixar movies and shorts and I enjoyed the first Cars. But I canhonestly say that this is Pixar's first misstep. Let me start with theexcessive violence that this movie presents. It's opening sequencealone makes me question some of the decisions Pixar make of this movie. The graphics continue to be stellar but the story is subpar and that'swhat we go to Pixar movies for. Also with Pixar their previous filmsare as entertaining for adults and children which is not the case forthis story at all. It has too many adult themes and is kind of boringfor children. Lastly this movie is preachy and lacks the usual heartfound in previous Pixar films.

Cars 2 is better than any bad animated movie in the past couple of years

People giving Cars 2 a bad rept saying that its not up there with the Toy Story films, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Up, The Incredibles, Monsters Inc, any other Pixar film, Dreamworks Animation films (How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, Shrek) Blue Sky (Rio, Ice Age), Despicable Me, Rango or any other hit animated movie in the last couple of years, its not as bad as what critics think about this sequel, yes, Mater goes a long way from being the comic relief character in the first Cars film as now more as a main character in this film leaving Lighting Macqueen as a supporting character this time around but come on at least nobody is crying like Toy Story 3 and Up in the last two Pixar hits. Pixar's first box office disappointment and critical failure isn't the end of the world yet that every animated studio gets a misfire fit now and then that its better that any bad animated film. See this on dvd and blu-ray for the Toy Story short and try to turn your brain off when watching this just like people turn their brains off for Green Lantern. Think about other bad animated movies twice before seeing this. Next year with be better with Brave, the next Pixar blockbuster!

It's actually very well done, but not necessarily for children

This review is from: Cars 2 (Amazon Instant Video) I loved the first movie. Even after reading several negative reviews, I went ahead and bought it anyway because, hey, I'm fifty and a little violence especially when it's between animated cars doesn't bother me.I agree with those who find it too violent for children, but I did watch it with my friend's three year old who is scared by everything and he loved it. He didn't seem to notice the violent issues and the adult jokes go right over a child's head. I love the idea of a James Bond sequel and think if they had tried to just to a redo of the original, it would have fallen flat like Happy Feet Two. They could have done it without all the "kill" scenes and made them straight chases, but the animation and scenes of various countries are just stunning even on the small screen.Disney Pixar does know how to make an amazing animated movie, just not for the younger set in this case.Update: I've actually watched this with several children, all of whom like it better than the original Cars. I have to agree with them. It's an excellent sequel.

Don't Expect it to be Any Good at All

I'm pretty sure by now your kids have screaming in your ears to take them to see this movie, and eventually you'll give in, or even look forward to having a good time at the movies with kids like I did.Well, don't raise your hopes up one bit! The movie started with an excellent and thrilling opening scene (although a tad violent for some kids)...but that was about it. It was spectacularly downhill from there. There was no point to the movie. Mater the spy is a cute idea in shorts and limited doses, but not in a whole movie. There are some awkward bromance scenes in the end, and the whole movie is littered with laughless gags and sad attempts at bringing a James Bond feel. There is simply no plot or purpose to this movie. So, while you've been dragged into the theater, remember that you can always look forward to some other good movie in the future that you can take the kids to.

"Kill Lightning McQueen"!............Inappropriate.

I really like Pixar films, but I've always regarded "Cars" as theweakest Pixar offering - I would give that film 7/10.Now this one - Cars 2; I verged on actively disliking this film. Iparticularly disliked the call - given by the Baddies; "KILL LIGHTNINGMCQUEEN". I'm sorry - but this just isn't suitable for the very youngfollowing that a film like this is bound to attract. Not only this; there is a lot of blasting and blaming, cars fall intothe sea and are evidently drowned. There is quite a lot of low/mediumlevel violence. I didn't like any of that and I think it'sinappropriate. There are actively nasty dislikable characters. The film itself is weak. It's sort of about misunderstandings andfriendship, I think. But it comes out all twisted.OK - It's fairly fast moving, it's very colourful. But on the otherside - it's silly and actually a bit boring. The first cars film was very mild and child-like, but Cars 2 goes inquite a different direction, a direction I didn't feel comfortablewith. I'm surprised Pixar have come out with a follow-up like this,it's not like them.I can't recommend this film.

A Lot of Fun, But It's Hard Not To Feel a Bit Disappointed

For many years, people have wondered if Pixar was capable of making afilm that was lacking in quality. Some might've felt this was true with"Cars", Pixar's 2006 animated comedy. While I felt that was a finefilm, a sequel was unnecessary, considering the very good ending to thefirst film. Without Paul Newman (the voice of Doc Hudson in the firstfilm), the project was already a mess from day one. It seems as ifDisney forced Pixar to do this film, and John Lasseter (the director ofthe first film) went right along with it because "Cars" is his personalfilm and this was a great opportunity to expand the world of "Cars".Pixar always had a philosophy for sequels. They didn't make sequelsunless they had a good story that rivaled the original. "Toy Story 2"and "Toy Story 3" were excellent examples, and what we got from thesesequels was a beloved trilogy. "Cars" didn't need a sequel, it endedquite nicely. However, I have a feeling that John Lasseter went rightalong with the executives at Disney with "Cars 2", since it's his ideaand that he had an opportunity to expand the world of "Cars". "Cars 2"could've worked a lot better as a very good direct-to-video sequel, because sometimes, it feels like it. "Cars 2" takes Lightning McQueen(Owen Wilson) and Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) around the world in anenergetic adventure. McQueen competes in the World Grand Prix, 3 racein 3 different countries. (Japan, Italy and England) During the trip,Mater gets mistaken for a spy by British intelligence Finn McMissile(voiced brilliantly by Michael Caine) and his spy-in-training partnerHolley Shiftwell. (Played by a rather good Emily Mortimer)Their mission? Stop the evil Professor Zundapp (Thomas Kretschmann) andhis gang of lemons (cars rejected over the years, angry at the worldfor turning their back on them), who are going to sabotage the WorldGrand Prix. This puts Lightning McQueen, and the other racers competingwith him, in danger. But Mater of course, being a goofball, is no spy. This could've worked very well. Unfortunately, the spy plot seems toovershadow Lightning McQueen and the rest of the characters, old andnew. The film is unbalanced. Mater is the focus of 85% of the wholefilm. As one who found Mater to be a great character from the firstfilm, it got tiring to see him constantly, when someone else neededscreen time. I was hoping we'd see more of the other WGP racers, theRadiator Springs gang and even the villains to some extent. Thevillains were surprisingly lacking in development. With the whole"rejected cars" theme, there was potential in these villains. We don'tget to see much of Professor Zundapp, although we get a lot of sceneswith his rather dim-witted lackeys Grem and Acer. (Joe Mantegna andPeter Jacobson, respectively) The real villain behind the scheme isactually obvious, believe it or not. And this "real" villain is alsosomewhat underdeveloped. The other racers don't get much screen time either. Cocky Italian F1racecar Francesco Bernoulli (John Turturro) is a rival to LightningMcQueen, but he's no Chick Hicks. Only two other racers (Jeff Gordonand Lewis Hamilton) get a couple lines, the rest don't say a word. It'sunfortunate, because their designs are spectacular. We don't see muchor hear much from the Radiator Springs gang until the film's final 20minutes. So aside from Mater hogging up the whole film and the muddledstory, what did work? The action. Well-staged, exciting and full of eyecandy. (If not a little over the top) Stunning animation, as always.Pixar didn't rush the animation (but they rushed the story), they wentall out with it. The character designs, the backgrounds and howeverything was given a car- like appearance. It's absolutely amazinghow much effort Pixar puts into each of these films. The reason thefilm works in the end is because it's a fun, summer blockbuster-typethrill ride.If you take "Cars 2" for what it is, you may enjoy it, a lot. It iscertainly Pixar's weakest and strangest film to date. It's rushed andoften messy. Parts of the film are lowbrow and obnoxious, with zippydialogue that is a lot different from the well-written dialogue fromany other Pixar film. It felt very un-Pixar like on many scenes.Michael Giacchino's score is a mixed bag. (I love the man's work, it'srather unfortunate that the score didn't work well in this film) Toomuch Mater and not enough on the other characters. These flaws goagainst pure thrills, excitement, gorgeous animation and some wonderfulmoments in the film's second half. "Cars 2" really shouldn't have beenan official Pixar film, but a spin-off to keep this already monstrousfranchise going without hurting the studio's track record. Still, "Cars2" is enjoyable fun with some substance in it, but it was somewhatunnecessary.B-

High action sequel, bare-bones story

This sequel is really closer to 2.5 stars, but of course that's depending on one's own point of view. While the movie is visually stunning, there is ALOT (and I mean alot) of violence in the form of explosions, threats, death-defying suspense, etc. There are also scenes featuring the cars drinking martinis and pub lagers and lots of low-brow potty humor. The plots concerning Mater feeling out of the loop and about "big oil" can be very confusing to little children - obviously, this is meant to appeal to older kids and adults. I really don't understand how Disney/Pixar got away with a G rating when the content in this movie is obviously more for a PG film. Other Pixar movies such as 'Up' (not to mention the Dreamworks animated films) have made great profits with PG ratings... what made Cars 2 exempt? In regard to the dvd itself, there are very few frills included - you have to upgrade to the blu-ray and 3D blu-ray to get the majority of the extra features. Very frustrating for those not wanting to expand into a blu-ray collection. Shame on Disney for this shady practice! If you absolutely must purchase Cars 2, I suggest using an online coupon, or just purchasing this used!
