Columbiana has a relatively basic storyline. Zoe's character witnessesher parents deaths at a young age at the hands of a Columbian cartel, and grows up to become an assassin to avenge them. Very simple, nointerweaving plot arcs that are hard to follow or understand. It's arun and gun movie. Thus the story isn't that important in this film really; its more theaction, which some have referred to as B-movieish, but I would likenmore to the flare and faced paced action of the The Matrix. There are plenty of nice explosions, sets and set pieces getting blowninto oblivion, and lots of gun fire going on throughout. Luc Besson isalmost a poor mans Michael Bay in this sense. He delivers raucousamounts of gun play and stuff getting shot to hell, but does so withvery little 'graphic' detail. No one's guts get ripped out via machete,no heads getting blown off, just a lot of cartel thugs getting takendown in a very calculated assassin like way.Zoe is convincing as the heroine trying to redeem her family'sslaughter, but is only given a handful of emotional scenes to work withto show her inner turmoil. The film could have been much better, the character more refined, thestory more complex, the action more graphic, but for what it was, itwas very entertaining from start to finish and is worth watching.

I thought this movie was OK even though most of the stunts are justabsurd. But still it's fun to watch a girl kick !ss. I thought thefirst part where she gets into the jail and then carries out herassignment was really cool. It was mission impossible like, but thatwas the only cool part other than the shark tank. The ending just hasher going in guns a blazing, no cool plan. The gist of the story is a young girl, Cataleya, sees her parentskilled in Columbia. She escapes to America and gets her uncle to trainher to be a killer and then seeks revenge on her parents' murderers. All is going well until a picture of her gets out, then she's got theFBI on her trail. But she won't rest till she gets her revenge.FINAL VERDICT: It had some good scenes but also ones that were reallysilly. It's OK if you want a pure popcorn action flick.

This is a great movie! Incredible skill in movie- making had been usedon this one. The movie gets us to sympathize a family and person whichactions we normally should / would not sympathize. A great plot, greatacting, perfect balance of action and sensitivity. I really have a hardtime understanding how people could actually rate this one under asolid 7. I mean, come on a 5,9? This actually makes me think twice now, when searching IMDb for apparently "good" movies, only taking inconsideration those who are above a certain rating. I really recommend watching this movie for everyone who likes actionmovies on the level (or even above) james bond, mission impossible etc

I saw exactly what I was afraid of. A pure Luc Besson very entertainingand sleepless crap product. Even filled wit pills, you stay awake allalong this high power movie absolutely full of emptiness. No sense atall in this story of vengeance, where the characterization is reallyawful, terrible and every sequence incredible at possible. You couldfill a library only in describing all the unbelievable situations ofthis film. You also may recognize a Luc Besson's piece of work at firstsight. As some decades ago, with Cannon Group - Golan Globus -'s crap.Such a shame that Olivier Megaton - the director of LA SIRENE ROUGE -chose to make films with Besson. He made the wrong choice, see forinstance LE TRANSPORTEUR 3. He penetrates in his own doom.

Got a chance to check out the movie "Colombiana," Zoe Saldana, JordiMolla, and Amandla Stenberg. When I first saw the previews to thismovie I wanted to see it in the movie theater. I didn't get a chance toand to see it in the movie theater so I bought it on DVD and I'm glad Idid because I liked this movie a lot. This movie is about a little girl that witnessed her parents death andis out for revenge.I liked this movie a lot! Them showing her when she was little was abrilliant idea to me. It gave the movie more feel to it. You felt herpain more and it kind of leads you to agree with her actions more. Thekill scenes/action scenes were on point. Some of them, just genius! Myfavorite kill scene is when she shoots the guy in the shark tank. Theway she looks at him after he pulls the trigger, when there was no morebullets in the gun was priceless. I also like how they let the audienceknow that she is still human and no one is perfect at anything. Eventhough her kills were on point she was still frail to the strongconnection of a human she could possibly fall in love with. Overall avery good movie!I give this movie a 9 out of 10! This is a movie to see before you die.You don't have to see it right now, but before you pass give this moviea chance. Buy this on DVD if you got a few extra dollars lingeringaround. Your going to want to watch this movie whenever you feel likeit!

Another action film produced by Luc Besson? Sure, why not? After all,his B-movies factory brought us various amusing films (such as Takenand The Transporter and its first sequel), which did not have bignarrative ambitions, but which had enough violence, stunts and drama inorder to work as entertainment which does not require any effort fromthe spectator in order to be assimilated. And all the same can be saidabout Colombiana. The screenplay from Colombiana does not offer anything new, and itlimits itself to show us situations and subjects recycled from similarfilms; but director Olivier Megaton's interesting visual style, alongwith the conviction shown by actress Zoe Saldana in the leading role, rescue the movie and capture our attention with the help of solidaction scenes, which do not have any credibility but are wellchoreographed and even ingenious to some point...even though theyoccasionally fall into the ridiculous by feeling such convenient (forexample, the scene of the sharks). Anyway, Megaton brings a good rhythmto the movie, something which was enough to keep me entertained. The performances from Colombiana are adequate, and the member whichmost stands out by my point of view is Amandla Stenberg, who appearsduring the first half hour of the film interpreting the main characterwhen she was a young girl. I almost wished that the entire film wasfocused on this girl who stabs criminals, jumps from buildings andleaves her violent persecutors behind. It might have been like thathypothetical sequel of The Professional I have always imagined, with agirl as a killer. In conclusion, I can moderately recommend Colombiana as a decent actionfilm which fulfills with its purpose of bringing the audience a whileof hollow entertainment. In summary, entertaining but not verymemorable.

Highly recommend it, gave it a 10. youshould watch it tell your friends about it and rate it a ten as well.then write a review for it like i am doing. In all seriousness this wasa very awesome movie. There is a reason why I do not like this movie. It's not because of the special effects, actually, they are great! Norit's because of the cast - most of em did an good job.The thing I do not enjoyed is, that the director tried to combine 2types of movies - but he missed his goal to 99 %.The problem @ Columbiana is, it wants to be a bit less realistic, butthat for more cool - Yeah, some scenes are! But to try to on the otherhand make the film emotional, is a real bad mistake. In not any scene Ifelt pain or anything else, not even as "Mamma" and the other guy werekilled. They made it too dramatic and when you imagine this "superspecial woman" that can climb under a car like Spiderman and swim in asharks aquarium (with no logic entrance), you do not really believe inher feelings. The director should had made a decision: Even he does an surrealisticmovie like kill bill all over the line, or a drama, like Leon (wich wasa way more realistic, even if not the most realistic movie). One other thing I missed in the movie: I did not laugh @ anytime... anaction based film without any funny scene is really really bad.whatever, if you shut down you brain completely and like hot girls, then you might like it.If you expect an good action movie with some story, you will bedisappointed :(

Luc Besson is known for being part of movies where it feels and seemslike a quasi video game style movies. Sometimes it can be entertainingto watch although the plot isn't that thick but sometimes it can justend up as below average movie that is just way too predictable. Andgoes in a narrow path with bunch of fights and shoot outs thrown in.What this is, is basically a revenge flick with a narrow path. I knowthis movie might have tried to go in a fast paced direction but itwould have been nice to know a bit more about the stuff that leads tothe action sequences. Also having more depth when it came to the plotwould have made a big difference in a positive way. I liked how themovie sort of has a bit of a graphic novel feel to it, but it stillsometimes comes off absurd and not believable. Sometimes when a moviedoesn't take itself seriously and goes in a absurd and crazy directionit can still turn out to be a good flick. But this movie just didn'tseem to know which direction it's trying to go and it's not onlybecause it has a anorexic chick kicking butt but some parts don't makeany sense at all obviously. Although this movie has some similaraspects to Luc Besson's actually good films in the past, this one can'treally compete with those. What this movie does offer like pastBesson's quasi video game style movies is the action and it offers justthe right amount of it. So anyone that cares more about the action andnot much when it comes to the plot might be satisfied with this movie. The direction it goes isn't boring though and is entertaining for someparts and it does have it's moments. But when it tried to go in thestory direction I just wanted the action to kick in quickly but thatwasn't a problem since it does move quickly to it.6/10

Revenge movies have been made over and over again. Some get it right, like Leon: The Professional and others get it terribly wrong, likeDrive Angry. Colmbiana falls somewhere in the middle, and that'sunfortunate. Olivier Megaton's direction is fairly decent, as shown bythe intricate opening sequence. Regrettably, the problem with the filmis in a script put together by Robert Mark Kamen and Luc Besson. Whatmakes this even more unfortunate is that Luc Besson previously wroteand directed the previously mentioned Leon: The Professional, and haswritten other hit films. It's Besson's resume and reputation that setmy expectations on the higher side, only to be disappointed. Megaton'scasting is for the most part well put together. The extremely slim andslender Zoe Saldana does a solid job as Cataleya, and Cliff Curtis isexcellent as Emelio, Cataleya's uncle. Michael Vartan, however, wasmiscast, and I consider myself a fan. Vartan's doe-eyed look doesn'twork in an action thriller of this type. A stronger presence is needed, and Vartan does not provide strength; only a dull presence. Saldanamost recently appeared in Star Trek and Avatar, showing promise andthat she's more than just a pretty face and nice body. In Colombiana,Saldana effectively demonstrates that she possess the necessary toolsto be an action star. The script does not do her justice though, putting Cataleya in situations that any intelligent assassin wouldn'tallow themselves to be put; and that doesn't include the unlikely waysin which Cataleya gets in and out of specific predicaments. If you arelooking for believability, then you need to look somewhere else. If youare looking for deeply developed characters, I'm sorry to disappointyou but the only thing that's deep is the stuff you are careful not tostep in when walking in someone's yard or alley. What started out as amovie with tiny potential, ended up as something far worse than justbeing terrible; it ended up being a movie that's mediocre, unoriginaland predictable. What's even worse though, is that it's not memorablein any way and it's not worth remembering. Grade: C-Visit our site at www.twodudereview.com

¨Never forget where you came from.¨Zoe Saldana is this year's Angelina Jolie, although instead of playingAgent Salt, she is a Colombian assassin who is set at avenging herparent's killers. The movie is action packed and Saldana shines in herrole proving she can be a lead action star. The plot is simple andwe've seen thousands of these revenge movies, but that doesn't mean wecan't be entertained with the premise. Colombiana isn't a memorablefilm and it doesn't add anything to the existing girl power slashrevenge genre, but it is entertaining nonetheless. It is verypredictable, we've seen the action scenes before hundreds of times, butSaldana makes the movie worth watching. She is great in her role andlooks better than ever. As for the rest of the cast they were allpretty much forgettable. There weren't any interesting villains either, everything centered towards Saldana. Director Olivier Megaton(Transporter 3) may perhaps have made his best film to date, althoughit won't be very memorable. His movies are simplistic action centeredfilms with little character development and several plot holes. Thisfilm was written by Luc Besson who in my opinion directed one of thebest action films of the 90's: Leon the Professional, but he hasfocused on writing now and he has had his shares of hits and misses. This is probably not one of his best efforts, but I still had a goodtime in the theater nonetheless thanks in most part to Zoe Saldana whowas very entertaining in her Nikita-like role. The movie begins in 1992 in a small city of Colombia where a mobsternamed Don Luis (Beto Benites) orders his bodyguard Marco (Jordi Molla)to kill a family because he has been betrayed by the father. Ten yearold Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) sees how these mobsters murder herparents, but somehow eludes the mobsters after her dad gives her anescape plan. She manages to arrive in Chicago where her uncle Emilio(Cliff Curtis) raises her. Emilio is a hit-man, and young Cataleya askshim to teach her how to be an assassin. She wants to avenge herparents' death. The film then jumps to the present where we see an allgrown up Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) doing what she does best: killing. Shehas become a cold blooded assassin, but what Emilio doesn't know isthat while she is murdering her targets she is also leaving her mark inorder to get the mobs attention back home. Her mark is a Cataleyaorchid which is only grown in the Colombian town where she grew up. TheFBI agent in charge of tracking her down is Ross (Lennie James) who hasno clue as to who he is supposed to be looking for. When he finallydecides to release the details of the murders to the media, the mobfinally receives the message and decide it's time to search forCataleya. The only problem is that she has kept secluded to herself, her only contact being Emilio himself and a boyfriend with whom shebarely communicates: Danny (Michael Vartan). The movie opens with a very interesting action scene, probably the bestin the film where we see the mobsters chasing the young Cataleyathrough the Colombian streets. Amandla Stenberg plays her characterreally well although she is only in the first 15 minutes, and thenSaldana takes over from then. The rest of the characters are prettymuch all forgettable and so are most of the action scenes. I did enjoythe movie although I know there is nothing new or original about it.Colombiana only serves to prove that Saldana can be a lead actress andthat she can be great in better scripts. I enjoyed the film in the sameway I enjoyed Salt, so if you didn't like that movie than you probablywon't enjoy this one. The editing action scenes are very similar tothose of The Transporter so you have a lot of cuts and sometimes theaction is hard to follow. Colombiana is still an enjoyable film if youdon't go into it with much expectation.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/

I haven't seen the movie yet. Just the trailer. But as a Latin Americancitizen I have to say that I'm offended. I'm Ecuadorian but as a hugefan of Colombian productions I feel is not fair that with all thetalent available and eager for an opportunity in Hollywood, Colombianactors and actresses are not even taken into account in a story thattalks about their reality. We are not denying that Zoe Saldana has aPuerto Rican heritage and a great talent but come on, Colombiantelevision and movie industry is monumental if we compare it toMexican, Peruvian or even Argentinian. Colombian actors and actressesshould be able to show and tell their own story and show the world whattheir industry is capable of. As I said before, I'm not Colombian butif producers think of ever telling an Ecuadorian story I would expectthat at least a 30 % of all the cast is Ecuadorian. There's no one elsethat understands and lives your own reality than yourself.

That Luc Bessson (the TRANSPORTER series, LA FEMME NIKITA, etc) wrotethis sprawling blood bath (with Robert Mark Kamen) is a bit of asurprise. Usually Beeson's scripts are smart, clever, and witty despitethe gore. This time the cake fell. Perhaps the sludge is due todirector Olivier Megaton's obsession with jumping out of windows andgory assassinations that prevents this film from taking flight becausehe certainly has a cast that could have given him much more.!0 year old Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) witnesses her parents deaths bythe ruling mob in Bogata Colombia in 1992 and is aided in escape to theUSA by unique means where she is adopted by the Restrepos (CliffCurtis). Instead of school Cataleya wants to become a killer to avengeher patents murder: Restrepo bargains with her - school first then hewill teach her how to kill. Jump 15 years and Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) isa full blown assassin, working as a hitwoman as a day job and seekingout her parents killers by night. Through a series of +/- creativedisguises and escapes Cataleya continues to murder, falls in love withand artist (MIchael Vartan), fools the police (Lennie James), avoidsthe complicit FBI ( Callum Blue) and continues her struggle to kill thepersons of interest - Jodri Mollà , Beto Benites and Jesse Borrego. Isit all resolved after the bad guys are all dead? No, because there isthe suggestion of a sequel!Good actors, sloppy script, redundant violence, noise, and lots ofblood - if that is what lights your fire, this is a movie for you. Grady Harp

Cataleya (Saldana) sees her parents killed and she vows at age 10 tobecome an assassin to avenge those deaths.Okay, now we have Cat (Stenberg) a 10-yr old action hero who grows upto be the assassin she always wanted to be. How good is that? I'm stillfiguring out what I want to be when I grow up. Is she as good as MattDamon in those Bourne movies? You bet. Cataleya as Cat at age 10 has some moves to die for as she runs fromthe people who killed her parents. As an adult those moves are still apart of her and she is a no-nonsense assassin. Sometimes that is whatis needed especially when she goes after the bad guys. This moves at a good pace and you won't be bored. It's a typical actionmovie with all the trappings except that the action hero is Cataleya. The FBI and the CIA are at odds as to who is committing all these hitsand believe they are looking for a man. HA ! Keep in mind that all of her hits are meant to send a message to thepeople who killed her parents. There is method to her madness. All inall very well done. The action scenes whether actual stunts or CGI wereright on the mark. (7/10)Violence: Yes. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: Yes.

Cateleya(Zoe Saldana) is a perfect killer, she knows how to get in andout without being detected, also has amazing fighting skills. She isgood with any weapon, a gun, knife, you name it. But in her personallife, she lives a very quiet peaceful existence. She has an artistboyfriend(Michael Vartan). But she slips up, when she starts leavingmarks on her victims. In hopes it would draw the gangster that killedher parents. Then an FBI agent(Lennie James), starts closing in on her.How will this all turn out? Zoe Saldana really sells this movie, as an action hero. It feels likeif Jason Statham was a female, it would be Zoe Saldana. This had somepretty good action scenes, and some good shoot outs, and it has apretty good fight scene also. But it does slow down in spots, and getsa little boring in some scenes. Michael Vartan was alright, he was justthere. But all in all, a pretty good action film.

I wasn't really interested in going to see Columbiana. My daughterwanted to see it before she went off to college. I am so glad she mademe take her.Young Catelaya blew me away! Her parents taught her well. She played itcool. That little girl is going to be a big star someday.I skeptical about how a woman that thin could kick butt. Zoe was simplyfantastic. She needed to be thin so she could fit through all of thosetight spaces. Brute strength wasn't needed. She had to be smart to planher entry and escape and know how to defend herself. The action was phenomenal from beginning to end. It's worth seeingagain.

I'm going to begin by saying Besson's Leon is one of the best filmsever made. Screenplay, acting, soundtrack, directing,cinematography,.....every aspect was magnificent. That being said,Columbiana is no Leon. Basically it's just a superficial Jolie filmwithout Jolie. The story is ridiculously expounded, the actors aresecond rate, and the setting is about as morose and uninteresting as itcould possibly be. No one cares about any character in this film. Ithas no heart, and no soul. Just a lot of bangs and booms. If that'syour deal, go see it....although there are better like-genre films towaste your money on. Besson missed his chance at a blockbuster sequelto a classic. This dreg is not it, although I'm sure it was in the backof their minds when they conceived this tripe. This film will be forgotten in a month. The comparisons will kill it.Meanwhile, Leon and Mathilda live on forever.

I'm glad some of the other reviewers on this site have acknowledgedthat Columbiana is a French film. Having the dialogue in English, pandering to the English speaking market does not detract from thefreshness of what is on the screen. Rather than a Hollywoodpaint-by-numbers exercise in boredom, we are given a wonderfullyempathetic lead character played by Zoe Saldana with completebelievability. Olivier Megaton directs the Luc Besson script with aneye to original twists to clichéd action sequences. I went in expectingless than what I got, and came out wanting to buy the DVD when it isreleased, hoping for a sequel. Far better than most American madesummer fare. Congrats to all.

Seriously. Kicks. A$$. Really. I don't understand what all the fuss isabout - I walked into the theater expecting to see a poorly made, crappy movie where all the actors are uttering cheesy one-liners anddoing unbelievably stupid stunts that did not add to the plot of themovie - this is what I was led to believe by all of the negativereviews. In fact, I almost did NOT see this movie in the theater atall. Boy, are all of the critics who posted horrible reviews of thismovie WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.Columbiana, starring Zoe Saldana as the titular character, is a hotbedof action which steam-rolls through from beginning to end. Incredibly, the killing and other violent activities which form the basis of themovie do not bump the flick up from a PG-13 rating - how they did this,I will never know, because the movie is very, very violent. People talkabout the lack of character development in this movie - that is just abig, steaming pile of horse manure. Here's why: As most of you must know by now, the main character andprotagonist, Cataleya Restrepo (Amandla Stenberg & Zoe Saldana), is thedaughter of a kingpin in the drug trade. When Fabio (Jesse Borrego),Cataleya's father, decides to leave the particular drug cartel he isassociated with, the cartel's Don or father, named Don Luis (BetoBenites) orders Fabio and his entire family killed. Fabio discovers thekill-order, and attempts to flee with his wife Alicia (CynthiaAddai-Robinson) and daughter, 10 year old Cataleya - but they are toolate. Unfortunately, the parents are killed in an off-screenstandoff-cum gun-battle inside their home while Cataleya sits terrifiedat the kitchen table. She does not see her parents killed, but sheknows what has happened. THIS IS ALL THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THISTYPE OF MOVIE NEEDS. The violent murders of Cataleya's parents createsa thirst for vengeance which will not be sated until all partiesinvolved suffer a similar fate. This is the movie's moment of truth: Itdefines the way the story is treated from that moment forward.Critics have complained that the audience was not shown HOW Cataleyadeveloped her childhood "parkour" or speedy obstacle navigation escapeskills. That's just silly - first, the child of a drug kingpin inBogota, Columbia would most likely be taught by her gun-wieldingparents SOME type of self defense - which NEED NOT be part of thefilm's scope - second, any child who plays with other children knowshow to run, jump and hide - and third, a terrified child is usuallyuniquely capable of eluding pursuers for a short period of time ifgiven enough of a head-start.I have also read complaints regarding Cataleya's lack of a personality- that's ridiculous. She is simply a vengeful bitch who does not losefocus - ever since escaping, her ultimate goal has been killing thoseresponsible for murdering her family. We even get to see her interactlovingly with her uncle, Emilio Restrepo (Cliff Curtis), hergrandmother, Mama (Ofelia Medina), her boyfriend, Danny Delanay(Michael Vartan), her adopted family, and her dogs. The movie iscareful to show that while these parts of her personality are importantto her, Cataleya cannot truly move forward with her emotionaldevelopment until she has exacted her revenge.Critics of the movie have complained about silly little cosmetictouches like Zoe wearing a black leotard, Zoe dancing in front of thecamera, and Zoe sucking a lollipop. REALLY? Are these the things thatmake a movie BAD? Get real. The most important aspect of the movie forme is that Cataleya is forced to see that her single-minded focus onvengeance directly causes the remaining members of her family to bemurdered. She is also forced to see what she has become when she facesFBI agent Ross (Lennie James) and threatens the lives of his family inorder to assure his cooperation. Once this happens, and once Cataleyafinally kills the man who ordered her family murdered, she is able tomove forward with her development - and her life. The story has a neat, tidy ending, perhaps leaving the audience with a feeling asanticlimactic as Columbiana herself must have felt. Do yourself a favor- do not listen to the critics - see this movie and judge for yourself.Columbiana is a legendary piece of action filmmaking.- Chipper F. I enjoyed this movie for about 2/3rds of the way and then it was as ifthey had run out of ideas and money and just wanted to end it as soonas possible. It went from being original to being a Rambo, Commando,Jackie Chan clone. Fight scenes that go on and on and on and on and onand machine guns that only kill the bad guys and bullets flyingeverywhere that never seem to come close to hurting the star.Booooorinnng! This has elements of "Salt" in it but in the end nevercomes close to being as good. What is it with movie makers these days, they can't seem to sustain even a very short movie. I compare thismovie to Legion which started out strong and went downhill rapidlyafter the first hour, and became actually a completely lousy stinkymovie which should never have been made nor should it be watched. Before this movie started there was a preview of a remake of "StrawDogs". I guess that's what is happening more and more these days.Everyone is into remakes with no original ideas to be found. Columbianais just that, a remake of many other films which are much much better.
