Some inappropriate moments for family viewing

There are a few inappropriate scenes in the film, for instance a very busty gnome girl calling out the rules of a race in a racy manner and wearing a blouse with a lot of cleavage. Other scenes with a male gnome in a very tiny spandex outfit that is meant to be funny but seemed a bit obnoxious in reality. We were a bit uncomfortable at times watching this with the kids. I don't recommend it for kids under 13, and if you're much older than 13 I have difficulty in seeing how you can like this film. My wife and I both couldn't wait for it to be over!

Stupid in a bad way

This movie was pure stupidity, the fact that I managed to watch thewhole thing without turning it off is why I ended up not giving it a 1.I understand what they were trying to do, but they failed miserably. Iknow for these kinds of movies they need to put musical-like scenes, but the way they did it was just lazy and pointless. The jokes weren'tfunny, and basically this movie is really not even worth watching.I gave this a 3, which is high in this case, purely because the qualityof the CG, but as far as watch ability goes, this is at the bottom ofthe list. Don't bother seeing it if your anywhere past 12. I'm not achild, nor do I have kids, so how they will view this movie might bevastly different than how I view it.

not worth it

I took my 7-year-old to see this and was quite disappointed. I get thewhole Romeo & Juliet parallels, but this bordered on the absurd. Whilethe story tries to depict love based on who you are and not what familyyou belong to, it ends up stereotypical, hokey and focuses more onrevenge than is does love. Everyone is "out to get" everyone else andby the end, I was wishing it had the non-G ending. There's no memorablemusic, no feel-good lessons and the animation was average at best. Theonly redeeming factor was the Flamingo. His character had more depththan either Gnomeo or Juliet's and I felt more of an emotionalattachment to him. Though I didn't pay the extra money to see it in 3D,it was hardly worth it to see in 2D. Don't bother with this one.

THE GARDEN'S A STAGE

Would Shakespeare roll over in his grave after seeing GNOMEO AND JULIET? Probably not--he'd appreciate the sly references cleverly included.GNOMEO is vividly colored and expertly voiced. James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Hulk Hogan, Jim Cummings, Jason Statham, Dolly Parton, et al bring life to these colorful characters. Executive producer Elton John wisely used his own music to frame the storyline--does anyone think Lady Gaga sounded like Stevie Nicks on "Hello Hello"? Also, I wish the chorus of mini-gnomes were used more--like the scene-stealing minions from DESPICABLE ME.My wife and I enjoyed the movie, as I think most will who want a good chuckle..it's fun!

Absolute crap! I could've seen better watching a feature on Nick Jr.!!

I bailed on this half way through however the daughter said she enjoyedit! As much as the trailer promised that this movie would be ashilarious as per say " Barnyard " was, it sadly was not at all and ithink the only time i actually laughed during this animated feature wasduring any of the parts of the deer lawn ornament ( voiced by OzzyOzbourne ) segments either then that it was a complete waste of timeminus the full score by Elton John. Oh another highlight to this filmalthough few were Jason Statham providing the voice of the Capuletleader Tybalt. Those things alone are the only recognizable plus's inthis flick.

Charming, clever and sweet

This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) Fairytale artwork and a charming Elton John soundtrack, a clever animated spin on the classic Romeo and Juliet story. Bought it for my young-at-heart adult daughter and her hubby for Christmas. Delightful and re-watchable.

Great for kids!

We took our 12 year old daughter and her friend to see the film thisevening. They seemed to really enjoy it, and were obviously old enoughto understand the humour of the Shakespeare slant! Lots of competitivecomic action for boys and a cute love story for girls. The girls bothsaid they would watch it again and tell their friends to watch it, soit can't be bad! I think they enjoyed the clear moral message 'be niceto each other or else!' Quite a girlie film on that point. Not much tohold a grown ups attention but I guess I wasn't the intended audiencealthough I must admit I did laugh out loud a few times! The VictorMeldrew and Aussie characters were particularly amusing. I woulddefinitely recommend taking kids to see this film.

Gnomes With Attitudes

Took my granddaughter to see this with zero expectation of enjoying it, (SPOILER) but when I saw Jason Statham as the bully and the great Death Race scene, I perked up. A lot of other movie references and great Elton John music (Elton Johns gnome cracked me up) made this the best Shakespeare movie since Shakespeare In Love. A lot of the humor will go right over kids heads, but they'll love the colorful characters and music.

Gnomeo & Juliet

As soon as I saw the poster and title I thought, oh here we go, takingan old story, in this case from William Shakespeare and trying anothermethod to modernise it, and this way looked a bit ridiculous, but Itried it nonetheless, from director Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2). Basicallythere are two neighbour gardens full of gnomes, they are rival groupsand families, the red gnomes and blue gnomes, and they do not get on atall. Gnomeo (James McAvoy) is the young male blue gnome of his gardenliving with mother Lady Bluebury (Dame Maggie Smith), and Juliet (EmilyBlunt) is the young female red gnome of her garden living with fatherLord Redbrick (Sir Michael Caine). One night the two characters meeteach other, instantly smitten with each other, and continue havingsecret trips to be together at night, despite knowing the blue and redgnome rivalry around them. It is when Gnomeo accidentally lets Tybalt(Jason Statham) be cracked and seemingly killed that the war reallyignites between the blue and red gnomes. In the end when it looks likethe star crossed lovers are finished and the two tribes of gnomes puttheir differences aside, the ending is not tragic, Gnomeo and Julietsurvive and live happily ever after. Also starring Ashley Jensen asNanette, Sir Patrick Stewart as Bill Shakespeare, Matt Lucas as Benny,Julie Walters as Miss Montague, Stephen Merchant as Paris, OzzyOsbourne as Fawn, Richard Wilson as Mr. Capulet, Jim Cummings asFeatherstone, Hulk Hogan as Terrafirminator Voice Over and Dolly Partonas Dolly Gnome. The voice casting is all really good, some greatBritish talents, the inclusion of memorable Sir Elton John songs isreasonably good, and the animation is alright most of the time, it maynot be the most original story and the ending is obviously changed forthe child audience, an animated romantic fantasy to see at least once.Okay!

Something for the kids, and Mum and Dad too - very funny

Gnomeo and Juliet finds Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers transportedto the back gardens of Stratford-upon-Avon, where there is a feudbetween the red-hatted and blue-hatted garden gnomes in the adjoininggardens of Mir Capulet and Miss Montague on Verona Drive. You get thepicture. This British 3D CGI feature has an incredible voice talent cast, andthey all do sterling work in support of the bright, colourful visuals. To single out two aspects of this movie, one - it has fun with itsShakespeare (the kids don't need it, but it works on an additionallevel for those parents who can remember it from school) and, two - itis consistently funny all the way through. The humour ranges from daftjokes to wordplay, visual puns, playing with the artifice of gardengnomes coming to life, character humour, situational humour, sight gags- I chuckled consistently all the way through.

What's in a gnome?

Gnomeo and Juliet is a computer-animated kids comedy produced by Baker Bloodworth and directed by Kelly Asbury, and featuring music from Elton John. It is based on the tragic play by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet. Featuring the voice talents of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Jason Statham, Maggie Smith, Ashley Jensen, Matt Lucas, Patrick Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Cummings, Hulk Hogan and more. Plot: The movie takes place in the modern day gardens of the Capulet and Montague families. In their gardens they have tons of of cute little lawn gnomes running around, who hate each other, and are separated by their colors, red and blue. Our main characters are Gnomeo(James McAvoy) a blue gnome, and Juliet(Emily Blunt) a red gnome. After the blues and reds have a lawnmower race with Gnomeo and Tybalt(Jason Statham) as the racers. Tybalt ends up cheating and causes Gnomeos lawnmower to get destroyed. Gnomeo plots revenge and decides to sneak into the reds garden at nightfall. at the same time Juliet is plotting to go on top of a greenhouse out in the distance that holds a beautiful flower at the very top. Gnomeos plan goes awry and he takes off towards the greenhouse to try to escape the reds he sees somone running towards the flower and he chases after the and grabs the flower right as Juliet reaches for it. The two fight over the flower and end up falling for each other in the process, when they discover that they are actually supposed to be enemies they are shocked. The two lovebirds decide to meet at a secret garden at certain times to profess their love to one another. While at this garden they meet an eccentric pink flamingo named featherstone, who had his lovebird taken away from him and was locked in a shed for 20 years. The flamingo teaches them they can't let anyone stand in the way of their love and they have to fight for their right to be together. But it's up to Gnomeo and Juliet to pull it off.My Thoughts: As soon as I heard of this movie, I thought of my girlfriend who loves gnomes and I thought this would be perfect for us to go see, and when I heard it featured the music of Elton John I knew it would be a good one, let us not forget he was involved in the Lion King. This movie didn't disappoint, The gnomy characters are very well animated nad the movie is full of vibrant colors. The interactions between the gnomes is very well done also. The only complaints I have is that I was expecting maybe kind of a musical thing, since the movie featured music by Elton John, and had so many famous actors in the movie, why couldn't Elton John play a role, and make up some songs to go along with it. That would have made it even better, but even though Elton didn't play a character like I was hoping, I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it is mainly for kids but many adults will enjoy it too. I think it is worth a buy and not just a rent.

gnomes, romeo, juliet, battle.

This movie is NOT a favorite of mine. The storyline is easy sospot..duh, Romeo and Juliet, with a little bit of quirks added. Iwaited all this time to see this movie and not to mention the theaterspractically force people to pay more for a 3D film, by not giving themthe option of seeing it cheaper in 2D...ridiculous.I couldn't tell you what was a favorite part in this movie, but I guessif there was one it'd have to be any parts with the flamingo. He wasalright funny, but not good enough to make up for the whole film'sdownfalls. I didn't laugh one single time during this so-called"comedy" and the Romeo and Juliet storyline was totally ruined...in myhumble opinion.AND WHEN ARE THE ARTISTS AND WRITERS FOR ALL OF THESE CHILDREN'S FILMSGOING TO STOP FILLING THESE FILMS WITH ADULT INUENDO AND SUBLIMALMESSAGES!?!? KIDS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE KNOWING ABOUT THIS STUFF UNTILTHEIR PARENTS DEEM IT NECESSARY, SO STOP TRYING TO POLLUTETHEM...THANX.That comment simply comes from all of these films in general, but therewere some iffy spots in "Gnomeo and Juliet" that were meant for adultsonly to see and hear perhaps. Like a few scenes with a happy gnomerunning around in a butt-less bathing suit for starters. And also adeer that seems like he's practically in love with Tybalt...odd...IN CONCLUSION...this film sucked pretty badly, when I had hopes offinding a new favorite animation. God bless.

Personally I like this better than William Shakespeares version!

I watched Gnomio and Juliet with my grandmother on Netflix Friday evening. I actually loved the movie NOT liked L-O-V-E-D. I liked that the characters were cute little lawn gnomes. And there was a fued between not only the gnomes because they were red and blue there were fueds between the neighbors that own them. I also like that Gnomio and Juliet actually have time to fall in love and getting to know each other instead of falling head over heals at first sight. Its a great movie for kids adults and teens to watch. I admit I had a feeling I was going to like it. But I didn't think I would love it as much as I do now. I'm not going to give it away too much of what happens. I also loved that Elton John music was played in the movie. I realize people may critize this movie for not being like Romeo and Juliet. But everyone must understand that you don't want children to see violence and two people commit suicide because of a fued that keeps them a part. The kids should just be kids.

Great use of 3D - Laughs & Smiles Abound

Going into this movie blind, with no expectations, and "negative critic review" skepticism, I came out smiling and applauding to the credits. The story is not to be compared strictly to the Shakespeare play, but it gives plenty of "easter egg" nods of acknowledgment to the masterpiece, including one very special (and clever) appearance that was quite a surprise to see! No spoilers here..Watching feuding gnomes in glorious color and animation will enchant the little ones, but the humor and script will captivate the older audiences, including everyone from young adult college kids (I'm 25 myself) to parents and grandparents. Keep your eyes peeled, and your ears perked, for fun and hilarious references throughout. The cast is a treat including everyone from Ozzy Osbourne to Michael Caine, and the music is great too, especially if you're a "classic rock" Elton John fan from days past. Every tune is either strictly from his library or carefully paraphrased background music that sends subliminal messages making you question, "Which one is that one?" Of course, each familiar number makes you want to sing along. As for the 3D, at first I thought some of the tricks at the beginning were "cheap" tricks, as are present in all 3D movies.. then the 3D opens up with some really awesome scenes which make parts of the scenery push through the screen and hover over the living room floor, from sprinkling water to the roofs of work-sheds to blades of grass to dusty debris to beautiful flowers. The crystal clear 1080p resolution brings out the rustic look of the gnomes, and the colorful palette of detail bursts with life on your 3D television. It's also a nice touch to have "full screen" 1.85:1 aspect ratio that fills your widescreen display without any black bars on the top and bottom.Overall, I went into this film with unfortunate doubts clouding my own judgment. The resulting smiles never ceased, the laughs were never forced, and I truly felt great when the credits rolled. The good feeling you have when you eat a really tasty meal, or walk out of a difficult exam, relieved and content?Yea, that feeling.

I Don't Know What To Think With This One

When you think Romeo and Juliet you probably think of RenaissanceItaly, beautiful landscapes, or maybe your mind goes to the last movieor play you saw depicting the story. Nearly all have the same basicpremise. Boy meets girl, boy and girl's family have been in a feud forcenturies and it doesn't end well for either of them. Well Gnomeo andJuliet is basically the same story... except it's lawn gnomes... andElton John music. Let's just go over the plot for now; you have the same premise as theplay, except the lawn gnomes are actually in two gardens in the backyards of two elderly people with the last names Montague andCapulet(and ironically enough they hate each other too). When thehumans are gone they come to life and start feuding over which family,or color gnomes, are better. So basically what I got from this is it'sToy Story mixed with Romeo and Juliet. Huh?To make things weirder we get unexpected songs from Elton John thatjust show up and seem to interrupt the flow of the film. Some of thesongs are new while some are old one's like "Don't Go Breaking MyHeart" or "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting." Those are classicsongs but in a movie based off a classic play by no less than WilliamShakespeare, they come off as a tad bit out of place. But the movie isn't all bad. The voice acting is pretty good withclassic actors and actresses like Michael Cain or Maggie Smith. Themain couple are pretty well voiced and the chemistry is prettyconvincing(as far as gnomes go). You have Patrick Stewart as a statueof William Shakespeare at one point and he get's a good line. Myfavorite performance was Stephen Merchant as Paris(Juliet's potentialsuitor) who made me crack up despite his very short screen time.Overall I'm pretty mixed with this movie. On the one hand it's a niceway to introduce the kids to the story and they even state at one pointthe ending of the original so it's not completely lying to them aboutthat. But on the other hand it seems like they were too aware that theywere a parody. There's numerous references to Shakespeare's other worksand maybe it would've worked out better if they just made it so thatthere wasn't an original Romeo and Juliet in this universe. And thenthe songs by Elton John. We could've really done without those. Surethey're catchy but they interrupt the flow of the movie, at least forme. I don't know if you have kids maybe this is worth a rental but otherthan that I don't really recommend it.

Cheesy, and pretty bad. Like the trailer

Really. Just watching the trailer and I went "oh... wow... that's goingto be a dumb movie". I was hoping to see Rangle (or whatever it'scalled) but my parents chose this one instead. My dad claims that heread a lot of positive reviews. Well...The movie was very entertaining to say the least. However, the 3d wasjust a waste of money. Nothing really stood out with the glasses on.The plot was okay, but there were a lot of really bad jokes, not justinappropriate, but just bad. Not funny. Corny. When the two maincharacters possibly "died" and we zoom into the tower mess, a handcomes out, and..... 'cue dramatic music' it's the almost naked guy!Woop. Lol. No.Rated 6/10 because it WAS entertaining, and I found the "Banana" laptop(pun to Apple computers, which most CGI is created on these days)funny. But other than that... meh...
