just horrible

I'm sad to say that i was extremely disappointed with this moviebecause honestly, it wasn't scary at all.. I watched it with mygirlfriend and throughout the movie we couldn't stop telling each otherhow much it sucked. The whole movie had the feel of an episode of"American Haunting." It felt like watching a half developed remake of"Poltergeist" "follow my voice" "come into the light Carol Ann"Granted, there are a few jumpy scenes if you're the "jumpy" type but inno way shape or form would i call this a great horror movie. Those thatfind this scary probably peed their pants watching "Scream 4" I wouldgo into detail but i don't want to spoil the "chilling" experience.smh..

BEST MOVIE EVER

Wow, this film was great. It scared the mess outa me. I LOVED IT!!! I could have sworn that I had already reviewed this film. Oh,well...NE-Wayz, This film is about a sweet American Family with three children -two boys and a baby girl. Everything seems perfect about this family, mom works from home as a song writer, dads wears a suit and works outside the home and all is well in Mayberry. Then the sounds begin. Voices on the babymoniter, doorbells and banging and why is this happening? I dont want to spoil it but this movie is awsome. One reviewer says this movie works well in the movie theater setting and I would have to agree with that person. The bangs and the thumps and the hissing and yelling really have an effect with the theater sound system. My favorite scene in the movie is when the mom is taking out the garbage and the song on the record player changes. Mom walks up to the house and peeks in the window to see... OMG!! You have to see this movie. Some people didnt like the "Ghostbusters" but I loved them. They got a little corny, but overall I thought they were a neccessary comic relief (RELIEF being the operative word) this movie gets to the point where it is too scary and we just need a break. The ending picks it up again and I look forward to the sequal... A GOOD SEQUAL por favor.

Great Horror Movie

This is one of the best horror movies that I've seen in a long time. I had not heard of the movie until today. After watching the trailer, we decided that this may be worth the price of admisson, and we were right. I've seen most horror movie from the 70s to now. I must say that I haven't been this scared in a long time. This movie had the feel of the Japanesse remakes. The visual and soundtrack made this movie awesome.

hmmm,..

I was expecting big things from this film, when i saw people saying itwas "the scariest film they'd seen in their life" i thought this isgonna be good. i watched with 3 of my friends and we laughed. i thoughtthe start of the story-line was good and then it just got stupid. theending was the most ridiculous thing in the world. the actors were OK.it was such a let down. i wish they would have developed the storylinemore as it had the potential to be a great film and it just didn'tdeliver, so disappointed. there were a few jump scenes and the scenewhere 'the man with fire on his face' was sharpening his nails was justplain stupid. i HATE clowns but i found myself laughing at them inthis. proves how good the film was! i would give this film 2/10 and sayanyone above 12 could watch this boring film...

Aesthetically, Insidious operates at the level of a decent high school video project.

Excellent Chiller.

When their young son is injured in a fall, mysterious and terrifyingevents start to happen to a young family...Horror films, especially recent films from America have become obsessedwith violence and gore. The so-called 'torture-porn' horror. There isalso an obsession with remaking or 're-booting' films to try and makemoney from the horror film franchises, like the recent Nightmare On ElmStreet. However, what Insidious proves, is that by writing somethingclever and serious, you can make a new and scary horror film. The key to the success of Insidious is that on the whole the cast playit straight. The cast led by Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne are allgood. It helps that the script, written by Leigh Whannell, while intruth not the most original, taking elements from films such asPoltergeist, it does enough with these elements to work on it's onlevel. It also helps having James Wan directing. Although still bestknown for making the first (and best) Saw film, he has made someinteresting films since, Death Sentence being one, and Dead Silencewhich has a similar feel to Insidious. While Wan may not be a high profile director, he does an excellent jobhere. He creates an atmosphere of tension throughout, including someexcellent scares in daylight, a rare feat indeed! And while he does usethe 'jump' scare technique, it works very well. Even at the climax ofthe film, which is a little predictable, he stages a chilling ending. There are faults. The ending does go a bit overboard, loosening thetension created up till that point, and a couple of paranormalinvestigators bring some unwanted comic relief. But these are minor issues. Whannell and Wan have created a trulyunsettling horror film, and one that pretty much succeeds on everylevel. It takes a lot to scare me when I go see a film. The only onesthat can, are those that create the right atmosphere. Most films don'tmanage that. This does easily. And it did scare me.This is easily one of the best recent horror films I've seen and I'drecommend it to anyone who enjoys being scared.

It was good, but will be forgotten.

I'm going to go ahead and say that "Insidious" is one of the best PG-13horror movie of the past twenty years, or at least of the 2000's, onlyto be beaten out by "Drag Me to Hell." "Insidious" is really scary. Let me just state that now. It is scarybecause it takes successful horror movies, what was scary about them, and applies them. I noticed some parts borrowed from "Poltergeist","Drag Me to Hell", and of course, "Paranormal Activity." All of whichwere scary on their own by using their own method. Notice how i said"borrowed" and not "stolen." This is only because "Insidious" was not aflop, but rather a hit in the horror industry. It's true, the first half of the movie is way more scary than thesecond. Once the actual story starts to unfold, it feels more like avideo game. Yes, i know, it is weird to compare a horror movie to avideo game, but i felt as though i was in Silent Hill towards theending. Not that thats a bad thing, but it is honestly how i felt. All in all "Insidious" is really good, but in the near future i feel itwill be forgotten. it doesn't go the extra mile, and isn't anachievement in the horror industry. If you are a horror fan, i suggestseeing it and play a game where you point out what parts are borrowed. If you're not a horror fan, take your girlfriend/ boyfriend to see it,because it is that scary.

in-s(tup)id-ious

THE term horror has been used in movies for the past 115 years sinceit's gruesome birth on December, 24 1896 at the Theatre Robert Houdin,France, in the form of Le Manoir Du Diable (The Devils Castle).Since then there have been many classics such as The Exorcist, TheShining and more recently Saw; and horror movies have gone fromstrength to strength scaring their victim audience even after the moviehas finished. So with the added bonus of this film coming from themakers of Paranormal Activity' and Saw; it promised to be a true horrorclassic. The film starts with teacher Josh (Patrick Wilson) and his composerwife Renai (Rose Byrne) moving their family to a new home whereeverything seems fine. However, within a few days their oldest son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) has anaccident and whilst in a comatose state an evil presence appears toconsume the family home.Unfortunately over time many good things eventually come to an end andwith the birth of Insidious comes the death of the horror movie.Despite a positive start with plenty of jumpy moments, the film rapidlylost life with the storyline being too far fetched and the directortrying too hard to place fear into the audience with ticking clocks andcreaking floor boards. The addition of subtle humour that seems to be an ever increasingfactor in most modern day horror films was unnecessary and ridiculousprops that should be scary only added to the pain of an alreadyagonisingly poor horror film. The movie did have some scary moments with a certain camera scene thatbuilds great suspense and the fear inflicted on the audience whenseeing a ghostly face by a baby's cot; and the performances fromPatrick Wilson and Rose Byrne were very convincing but unfortunatelycould not save the second half of this film.It also had the typical scenes audiences have now seen over and overagain like the voice through the baby monitor when no-one is upstairs;and before long you can predict exactly what is going to happen and howit will all end.For the horror film rookie, this may be a great start for you as thingswill only get better from here; however, for you veterans out therethis will no doubt be the final nail in what was once a terrifyingcoffin.

One of the better unintentional comedies I've seen

Well - to say this movie contains every ghost story, horror moviecliché ever used would be an understatement. But - for me that isexactly what made it entertaining to watch. I still can't decidewhether the creators were using every trick in the book on purpose as ajoke or if they really thought they were making something new andshocking? I would put my money on this whole thing being a big jokebecause I know these guys can make scary movies if they want to. I amrather surprised at how many reviewers say this is the scariest moviethey have ever seen! I suppose if you have never seen a single horrormovie in your life this might make sense - but for those of us who haveseen "Poltergeist" or "The Shining" you absolutely know exactly what iscoming around each corner of this film, right down to the piano strikesand violin shrills when something jumps out at you. As other reviewershave said - this movie starts off pretty strong and seems to really tryand build an eerie atmosphere - but by the film's midpoint it sinksinto just plain silliness and becomes almost slapstick comedy by theend. What other reviewers are not saying is that not only does themovie quickly sink into a world of silly clichés - but it also seems tolose all of it's budget. To me it seemed like the production qualitysuddenly drops off and starts looking like a cheesy straight to videohorror movie from the 1980's. Ghosts are clearly just stage hands inwhite face makeup surrounded by smoke from a fog machine. The final 10minutes when all hell breaks loose has one of the most non shockingendings ever. If you don't see it coming a million miles away then youare one of those people who has never seen a horror movie before thisone. In conclusion - This movie should absolutely be marketed as ahorror/comedy (if not a straight up comedy). Every moment that wassupposed to make you jump with fear instead made me convulse withlaughter. So if you are looking for a good scare - don't watch thismovie - but if you just want to be entertained and have a good laughthen by all means check it out.

Really awful

This is one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen. I don't know whyanyone would give this more than one star. Really. Don't waste yourtime, there are plenty of much better movies out there. This one herehas a bad cinematography, the story is really poor, the acting isformal. The guy who wrote the script doesn't know what an astralprojection means, he doesn't know if haunting or possessing hasanything to do with it, it looks to me he had a nice conversation withan old bored lady at the tobacco store and he made a script out of it.The director was surely missing from the set or he was not payingattention, or he was really stoned, or any of this combined. I reallydon't recommend this.

Let Me Tell You What Scary Really Is...

"The Others." Now, that is classic, makes-you-shudder, can't-get-it-out-of-your-head SCARY. "Insidious" reached for the stars and didn't even make it to the tree tops. As everyone seems to agree, the first part of the movie was promising. The second part, however, was swamped with cheap thrills, cartoon make-up and amateur special effects. I was disappointed and amused. With an actor like Barbara Hershey on board, I was expecting much, much more. I have to give it three stars, however, because I loved the two bumbling ghost hunters.

Keep that in mind, horror directors and screenwriters: nothing kills terror better than a pair of indie-rock-Mormon-missionary-looking ghostbusters.

A fun, old-fashioned, Haunted House Roller-coaster!

The first minutes of Insidious made it look like what I had thought itwould be. A decent-made horror film with decent thrills, although notvery original. By the end I sorta was in love with this film, andhere's why...The film's basic premise looks like another ghost story, but itsactually not like that. As it goes on different images and figures popup, which I thought was better than just having ghosts. While it's truethe basic plot of the film is not very original, there's somethingquite original about how the film goes about it. I mean, I have notseen a horror film like this, if I recall, in any past years with aclimax this 'overboard'. I say that in a good way. Yeah, the final acthas been criticized for going overboard, but I thought it made the filmstand-out even more. It really does have the tone of a roller-coaster.It sorta reminds me of The Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland.Ultimately, I strongly recommend this film. If anything, it is lovingin it's ability to play with loud music, creepy, if not scary, images.I didn't find the film scary to be honest, but I had a blast with it,and there are so many 'odd' scenes that years from now I will be seeingover and over again on Youtube. I am surprised that it has done as wellas it has with the mainstream moviegoers, since I would have thoughtthey would have dismissed it as 'dumb', especially in the over-the-topapproach at the end.

Less than stellar

I am a big fan of horror films, and have seen many over the years. Ihad heard good things about Insidious before sitting down to watch it,so I did have slightly high expectations going in. I must admit, thefirst half of the film was reasonably effective and did a good job ofsetting the scene for some decent scares. Yes, elements of the storyhave mostly been seen before, but I was still enjoying the movie.Unfortunately the story started to get rather silly during the secondhalf, and the whole "astral travel" thing left me a littledisappointed. However the worst feature of this film for me were theghosts themselves - they just weren't that scary. I mean from the DarthMaul look- alike to the ugly bride with a seriously bad makeup job, Iwas not so much scared as I was amused. I almost laughed out loud. Notgood. For a film that held such initial promise, I was left shaking myhead when the credits finally rolled. Not the worst horror film by along stretch, but it could (and should) have been so much better. Ifyou are after an effective scary film may I suggest any of thefollowing; The Exorcist, The Grudge, The Changeling (George C Scott),The Others or The Descent. 7/10

A Great Horror Film

How could you describe Insidious? The best words would be scary and fun. This movie is one of the scariest movies I've seen. It has everything a horror movie should have. Jump scenes, scary villains, a great plot ect. It's fun to watch with friends or by yourself in the dark. I can gurantee you will jump at at least one scene in this movie. Also, this movie has very good acting (something rare in a lot of horror movies). You can actually relate to the characters. The only complaint is after two views, it starts to lose it's greatness (it still is good though). In the end, this is a great movie that you should most definatly check out.

One Of The Scareiest Movies i have ever seen

I think its safe to say this is one of the scairest movies that i haveever seen. I was expecting it to be scary but not as scary as what itis there are some scenes that will make you jump some scenes that willhaunt you forever. The scares start right from the opening credits andit doesn't get easier to watch the pace of the movie is really good aswell it never has a dull moment plus the plot is a inventive one thatyou wont have seen much of. Insidous shows us that horror movies canstill be scary not just full of gore. Insidous is one of my top rankinghorror movies if you want a really really scary movie this is a mustsee but don't watch ot without the lights one ill warn you now is onehell of a scary movie. Insidous is a cleaver horror movie one that willscare you to the extent pf not sleeping watch it now.

scariest movie i ever saw!!

this is not a review per se (because i won't describe the plot or actors--you can search that on your own) but wanted to say this is a scary movie! not the stupid hollywood kind where a bunch of teens are knocked off one by one but a very quality, well-made horror movie with lots of spooky atmosphere (what producers and directors seem to miss every time and that's what makes a scary movie). It has a haunted house, demon possession, astral progection, talented adult actors who aren't having sex and kissing all the time, and most of all the foggy spooky atmosphere that makes it scary. i have loved horror since the 60's and haven't seen too many good ones that really scare me except The Exorcist, Silence of the Lambs and some lesser known films. I actually had to turn all the lights on in the house after seeing this movie and i'm an old guy! Highly Recommended! Please make more like this one and stop with the teenagers being slashed BS. Thanks for reading!

Deep Sleep

The Review:From the makers of Paranormal Activity 1 and 2 comes a new horror movie, Insidous, starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. The Paranormal Activity people have not lost their touch and Insidious is an excellent example of how to make a scary movie without having to overly rely on creating a gorefest. Rather, Insidious opts for creating and sustaining tension, playing the audience masterfully. You'll jump just when Insidious` creators want you to jump and you'll scream just when they want you to scream. Watch it in the right frame of mind and with a good audience and you'll be creeped out.As with Paranormal Activity, Insiduous takes the haunted house genre and combines it with the demon possessed child genre, a la Omen and the Exorcist. It throws in a pinch of A Nightmare on Elm Street and the result is something unique and extremely entertaining for devotees of the horror genre. It's clever and offers important new wrinkles for how our protagonists are supposed to deal with their situation. One can move out of a haunted house, but one cannot easily move away from a haunted family member.Insidous centers around the Lambert Family: Josh, Renai, Dalton and Foster. At first there's nothing about this family that marks them as abnormal, but as things progress it becomes clear that there is a very dark cloud hanging over them. As with the folks in Paranormal Activity, the classic signs of a house haunting begin when the Lambert family moves into their new home. Things move around, strange noises come out of the baby monitor and shadows seem to have a life of their own. Mom, and the kids seem to notice these things first and Dad is determined to rationalize away these strange happenings. Things progress to a point that even Josh cannot deny the evidence any longer. Without giving too much away, there are indeed supernatural forces at play and they have not settled upon the Lambert clan by mere chance.Insidious succeeds because you are on the same journey of discovery as the Lambert family. You learn alongside them answers to the question, why them? And the further you go, the more insidious their problems appear, hence the film's title. Another winner from the makers of Paranormal Activity. If you are easily creeped out, then think twice about this seeing this movie. While nothing will ever creep me out as much the little girl from The Ring, Insidous left me leaving on an extra light or two around the apartment, and very thankful that I don't live in a creepy old house.FTC Advisory: We purchased our own tickets.
