There he becomes part of a colorful community of outcasts, also-rans and the overlooked all trying to find a better future for themselves...often moving around town in a herd of scooters. In his public-speaking class, Larry develops an unexpected crush on his teacher Mercedes Tainot (Roberts), who has lost as much passion for teaching as she has for her husband. A Feel Good Movie For Our Age and Time

This feel good movie captures the emotional stress of our maturingworking population and our economic doldrums. The authentic everymanand everywoman portrait has a sensitive touch for the mainstream over35 generation and avoids all over selling and over dramatizing throughits restrained script, yet touching relevant points of experience andmalaise that is infecting our society and living experience. Cedric theEntertainer entertains without his wacky, acidic style while both TomHanks and Julia Roberts capture their roles and relationships well andwithout any of the typical melodramatics and over the top stunts foundin almost all other romantic comedies. This is a solid movie thatdoesn't need additional thrills, subplots along with some captivatingsoundtracks. The weakest part of the film is the final speech thatdidn't catch on fire, a non-memorable two minutes that didn't capturethe depth of emotion. Tom Hanks has some great facial scenes, particularly in the beginning and else where his character speaksmillions without saying anything. Well worth the money for those whoare now experiencing the pits of despair as Larry Crowne to escape theharsh reality of now and issue forth some modicum of entertaining hopewhich is exactly what the movie was likely supposed to do.

sadly one of the worst movies of the year

I agree with some other reviews saying that the poster and the trailerfor the movie somehow makes people think that they are going to see alight but enjoyable romantic comedy. I was expecting to be goodfrankly. I mean Julia Roberts has Pretty woman and Notting Hill, TomHanks has You ve got mail and Sleepless in Seatle so the less you canexpect from this actors together in a movie is good film. But I was sowrong. The characters are not likable at all. Tom Hanks really needs totake more rolls like Road to perdition he is already abusing of hisrole of the gold heart man and in this movie he looks really fake.Julia Roberts also fails terribly, she has lost the charm completely inthis movie, they don't have chemistry at all I mean "this coursechanged my life I met you" really? I got mad at that point ( spoilers)and the main problem of Julia Roberts with her husband is that hewatches porn? just plain awful I was going to give this a 5 but Ireconsider is just bad. not the worst but very mediocre anddisappointing. I finish by saying Tom Hanks get away from the directorschair and if you wrote this don't do it again please you are betterwinning Oscars

Feel Good Film

Perhaps my rating seems a bit high to those that have already reviewedthis film. And for those people, let the following message be a nevermind. Upon watching this film with my parents, we were fully aware of itsominous reputation. However, I have found zero cause for thisdesignation. Larry Crowne is, and forever will be (to me), an upbeat, happy film with an overall positive message. There is nothing left tobe said, other than if you're like me, and get tired of the mainstreamcult films filled with explosion scenes and "twists" then deviate fromthe norm and watch this film. Happy Viewing, all.

The Vidiot Reviews...

Larry CrowneNowadays, anyone with a high school education can get a well-paying jobwith benefits…in 1966.Unfortunately, the unemployed veteran in this dramedy doesn't haveaccess to a time machine.Due to a lack of post-secondary education, Larry (Tom Hanks) is let gofrom his job at the local U-mart.After some soul-searching he decides to enroll in community college. There, he becomes acquainted with his younger classmates, who initiatehim into their scooter gang.Meanwhile, Larry's love life picks up when his married teacher (JuliaRoberts) becomes available.Amidst all his socializing, Larry must also procure employment and savehis home from foreclosure.Lacking both the illumination and the laughs required to be anythingmore than a million- dollar ad campaign for continuing education, LarryCrowne fails. However, going back to school in your 40s does makes sense, becauseafter working for 20 years, you can finally afford to pay tuition. Bland, but okay

Larry Crowne (Hanks) has lost his job and his mortgage is under waterand he now has a lot of free time on his hands. What to do? What to Do?He decides to go back to school and start over. This was okay, but we expected more especially when we see big namestars in the mix. Didn't get it. Still it was okay. No constantlanguage, no raunchy sex talk and no stupid or silly goings on. Onemight say it was too bland almost snoozeable. The script was a littlebeyond 1950s. It is watchable only to see how Larry makes out. All the acting performances were fine. Tom Hanks directed this and theeffort seemed to be somewhat tentative, but it was okay. MercedesTainot (Roberts) is a teacher who is tired of teaching and probably oflife itself. Economics teacher, Dr. M (Takei) was a little tooanimated, and almost embarrassing. Lamar (Cedric etc) was okay; he hada perpetual yard sale going on his lawn. Again, look to the script, butall was okay. Two things come out of left field. The finger snapping which allowsLarry to join the Scooter Gang. Don't ask. And, the Scootersthemselves. Larry gets one to save on gas and ends up joining a schoolscooter gang, but the gang is docile. As the scooter gang rides by realbikers at one of their haunts, they get a wave from the bikers. Tameand almost funny. See? That was the comedy in here. I suppose we were all waiting for the love connection between Larry andMercedes. An awkward attempt was made by both and that cooled off likeit never happened until the last scenes where the assumption was theyare hooking up. We didn't care and was glad the movie ended at thatpoint. Chemistry for that kind of action between these two just wasn'tthere. There needs to be a hard and fast rule that says when a man's name isthe title of a movie, the story should be about corporate espionage, spies, cops and robbers or some such. Some recent names come to mindMichael Clayton, Harry Brown, Max Payne. When I first saw the titleLarry Crowne I jumped for joy thinking I was going to see some kind ofthriller. HA! Fooled again.Violence: No. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: Yes. One F-bomb was heard.

It's What It's Not

It's anyway nice to see Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts riding on scootertogether. But it's full of tiny beautiful details which I think wentunnoticed by some weary eyes. This is Tom Hanks all over with his benign vision and his simplicity. At a point I almost wondered how would the society be like if half ofthe movies made in the world were like this; to have drug addictsgiving a thought to cross equator travels and people picking up theout-thrown garbage, and no cussing. Like a reminder of the genre, or may be of the pure film making art. It's what it's not that makes it what it is. Larry Crowne. ThanksHanks.

Cute enough, but I wouldn't see it again.

This is a sweet production depicting what I guess a Hollywood actor TomHanks would know about the recent economy being tough on most of us.The entire film gives off this sappy attitude of camaraderie and "let'swork through these hard times together"! It was never drop to the floorfunny, but there were plenty of quirky moments that caused a lot ofchuckles throughout the movie. It's predictable, but not quite boring. Don't expect to get blown outof the water by anything said or done. It's got a lot of what anotherreviewer here aptly described as "Hollywood fairy dust" that I supposeTom Hanks acted out the most in his early acting career, and he's nowdirecting the same kind of stuff in his early directing career.Larry Crowne is a feel-good reflection of our current times with aHollywood air of optimism and assurance, telling us that with diligenceand persistence, we can all climb out of tough times while keeping anice standard of living. Go out and see it if you're just looking forsome relaxation and chuckles with some decent actors.

Just See It!

I'm not a big fan of conflict. If I want conflict, I watch the news. Having lost a job, however, I could empathize with Larry's angst at losing his. Upside down mortgage, paying the bills, constant rejection - conflict enough for me. This was NOT supposed to be a message movie. Or a life-changing experience. Or a lesson in life. It was a romantic comedy with the best in the business in the leads... who, I might add, still have the screen chemistry to make it believable. I loved Rita Wilson's Wilma Q. Gaammelgaard, and would love to know the story behind the origin of that name. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a beautiful starlet in the old Hollywood definition of the word. And her character, Talia, was a great way of showing that college is not always necessary...for everyone. (So maybe there was a little life-lesson stuff going on.)Every actor in the movie did his or her part well. And special notice to Nia Vardalos as the map genie voice. I know nothing about show business except what I read and watch on the back stories of DVD's. But my guess is that this set must have been fun to go to every day. And what a terrific opportunity for young actors to learn from the best. And experienced actors to entertain without a heavy duty, moral wheeling message.Thank you for the upbeat fun and escape from the evening news - and reminding us that sometimes the nice guy really does finish first, and gets an A+ to go with it!SEVERAL DAYS LATER: I just saw an interview with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Now I understand why this movie works w/o being sappy. Tom, like most of us, tries to overcome cynicism. That's the element I couldn't put my finger on. I can get depression free from the news and many shows (which I don't watch anyway), so why would I want to pay to be depressed!? If you want a lift from the mundane and negative, 'just see it!'

Tom Hanks keeps a genial tone in his movie Larry Crowne though I wasn't too convinced about his pairing with Julia Roberts

Just finished watching this Tom Hanks-Julia Roberts movie on a Netflixdisc with my mom. Hanks wrote this with Nia Vardalos and also directedhimself as the title character who finds himself fired from his storebecause of his lack of a college education. So he decides to go tocommunity college where he meets Ms. Roberts as one of his teachers.I'll stop there and just say that this was slightly entertaining thoughthe only time I remember laughing was when the Hanks character wasdoing a speech on French toast and saying he's doing it in English. Ialso really wondered how can one believe in the romance between thesetwo when one is the student and one is the teacher? Never mind that Ms.Roberts has a husband (Bryan Cranston) who likes looking at big-chestedwomen online that she knows about despite his attempts to hide it. Ithink I was more convinced that Larry and the much-younger Talia (GuguMbatha-Raw) had more of a chance especially the way she keptcommunicating with him. Still, I wasn't bored and the film does keep aconsistent genial tone throughout. So on that note, Larry Crowne is atthe least worth a look.

Hanks took a chance by portraying an ordinary life that gets inspired! Although Julia Roberts is not very "romantic"

Not bad, not bad. I have noted some critics who routinely, and rightly, insist that contrived cinematic "bombast" cheapens the story of realhumans, also complained that this movie is too bland and not bombastic.Or, rather, the characters are too bland. Seems some folks, users onIMDb as well, can't seem to decide how much "reality" is good, and howmuch phony dramatics and strained-for theatricality is needed toprovide the artificial "spice" necessary to prop up the illusion thatour lives are indeed meaningful, and anything other than doomedattempts to cloak ourselves in a false sense of specialness.Wait-- getting way too heavy there. Sorry! My point is that some films show a distorted and heightened sense of"action," and the criticism of such cartoonish melodrama is wellplaced. But that also means that when someone such as Tom Hanks, thewriter- director here, attempts to show us a realistic (maybe evennoble, in its own way) and well-mannered story about issues many of usare facing (unemployment, redundancy, uncertainty, re-purposing of ouridentities and lives, etc.), we must make the effort to get past ourown desires for car-crashes and explosions and boobies and at least tryto find the inspiration, or message, in a reflection of our own world.Hanks actually did a somewhat courageous thing. he went for the heartwhere we all live, rather than the pizazz and dazzle where most moviecharacters live. He actually thought a script about the ordinary mightbe more revealing than a tear-jerker or a critic-pleaser full of irony.I admire him for that.I do have a quibble- in a rom-com one wants to find the hero and/orheroine romantic and funny. I was more shocked at how unattractive thefemale lead was, admittedly after years of never having found herappealing. That's just me--- but I couldn't quite care, or keep fromwincing, when the female lead was on screen.I suggest that either they should have gone with better casting (moreattractive people) in the two leads (the younger folk were great intheir supporting roles, and the non-romantic Cedric the Entertainer wasgood as himself). Alternatively, they could have used those two ageingactors and simply rewritten the story as a middle-aged romance, such as"Last Chance Harry" with Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. I'm not sureif I would have found Miss Roberts any more attractive, although Imight have done, but the story would have been more realistic as aromance they expected me to cheer on.One pleasant surprise was seeing Wilmer Valderama, who played the geekyand mysterious foreign guy character "Fez" on TV's "That 70s Show."He's grown up now, and he makes a good adult. I am surprised he hasn'tgotten other acting jobs since "70s" ended 5 years ago. Maybe we'll seemore of him now? And the young woman who played the support, and TomHanks' college pal and mentor- Gugu Mbatha-Raw. Besides beingattractive, which as we all know is not a talent, actually, shedisplayed a marvellous energy. I totally believed the premise that hercharacter picked up Hanks' character, the retired Navy cook, andpropelled him into a hipper, socially-expanded and more exciting lifeon a college campus.

Surprisingly Fun Movie to Watch!

I have to be in a rare mood to watch romantic comedies but I could notpass up the chance to see what I would consider both the King and Queenof ROM COMs on the screen together -- Hanks and Roberts. Although theyworked together in "Charlie Wilson's War", this film may be a first inthat they are in a romantic comedy opposite one another. This movie exceeded my expectations! It was an extremely fun experienceand the humorous pace was very consistent throughout. There were neverpredictable lapses that one comes to expect with a romantic comedy.Very cleaver humor throughout.I would have to say that it would have been hard for anyone other thanHanks and Roberts to pull off, because much of the humor wassituational and went deeper than cheap one-liners. The emotionalexpression displayed by two of the best actors in the business madethis movie work.Veterans may like this one as well, and not just for the theme about aNavy veteran coming to grips with life. There were two former MarineCorps Public Affairs Officers -- Dale Dye and Rob Riggle. Riggle wasonce again at the top of his game and it was refreshing to see Dye showhis range as an actor beyond military roles. The only negative comment I would make is the color seemed like it wasoff a bit. It may have been the effect they were aiming for or it couldhave been the theater I saw it in, but it seemed like what you wouldget in a 110 camera for those of us old enough to remember them. Also, Cedric the Entertainer seemed to be billed heavily butunderutilized.Overall, this was a sweet, engaging but most of all hilarious film. Iam not easily moved but I had to dab the corners of my eyes a few timesdue to inspiration vs. sadness.I highly recommended catching this film in the theaters because I thinkthis will develop a cult following. Trust me, you don't simply want toearmark this for when the DVD comes out or you will miss out on thechatter about this one.

A perfect date movie for adults

I have read several reviews on this film and because of most of them I was hesitant about seeing it. But my wife was insistent about going so of we went. From the moment Tom Hanks hits the screen a sense of calm comes over you. He becomes Larry Crowne(aka Lance Corona). He is (again) a very like able guy. Trying to start over as a middle aged guy after he is let go at "UMART". The supporting cast does a nice job and although the plot doesn't have a lot of twists and turns, the movie does move along accordingly. Julia Roberts does a fine job although her character is a little annoying (not her falt I guess)and the ending seems wasted. This is no Sleepless or You've Got Mail but it does have its moments and for all its flaws it has one thing going for it... Larry Crowne!

Too little of anything other than juvenile and cheap laughs

Tom Hanks is a nice guy. Larry Crowne is a nice guy. But as a movie,"Larry Crowne" is only somewhat likable. Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) isfired from his 9-time-employee-of-the-month job at U-Mart. Yes, we'resupposed to feel sorry for him, and we do, but it's mostly played upfor laughs. The most we get into the psychology or economics of thedown-sizing is that "times change." Determined to not be down-sized again, Larry is off to college, for thefirst time. This is the beginning of the end for the movie, because allthe characters we meet at college are on the losing end of the need forcheap laughs. The college dean is obsessed with one of the teachers. Why? Because it provides a few laughs—that's the only reason. On hisfirst day of classes, Larry meets Talia who is going to help Larryreinvent himself. Why would a likable guy like Larry allow a hippiecollege girl to teach him about life? There aren't even any real laughswith their relationship, so there's no reason at all. Talia thenintroduces Larry to a gang of scooter riders. Apparently they have allseen "West Side Story" (1961), but there's no way if you went to yourlocal community college would you find that many kids so familiar withthe movie.Opposite Larry (in every sense of the word), is Mercy (Julia Roberts),an unhappy, alcoholic "teacher". I would classify her as one of theworst possible teachers. She claims that she wants her students to careand she wants to change their lives, but she doesn't actually want toteach. She doesn't want to show up on time for class, and she just sitsthere hung over. My biggest problem with "Larry Crowne" is that I'mpretty sure we were supposed to like and care for this creature. She'sgoing through a divorce. But she's divorcing Dean (Bryan Cranston) andsure he's a lazy, lying has-been, but he made me laugh with every linehe said. (But then again, I like Cranston so much I would probably evenmarry him as Walter White in "Breaking Bad").When it's just Hanks and Roberts, playing off of each other, the movieis adorable and funny. Their chemistry is perfect, and that's exactlywhat "Larry Crowne" needs, but they don't give me enough of it. Hanksand Roberts one-on-one (even throw in Cranston and George Takei) andthe movie would have been significantly better. An adult romanticcomedy with minimal romance and PG-comedy is welcome and refreshing, but the romance was down-played too much and the comedy was toojuvenile and not very funny. The best part of the movie is George Takei playing the greatest andfunniest economics professor you could ever imagine. He was givenenough time, but again, only for laughs, there's just so little reasonfor anything occurring.

Wow, did it STINK!

How's it possible to team up two of Hollywood's biggest stars, TomHanks and Julia Roberts and come out with a really lousy movie? Beatsme but Universal Pictures, Vendome Pictures and Playtone Productionscertainly did. The storyline was pathetic and Hanks annoyed the livinghell out of me chugging around on a quasi-moped to save gas money whilewearing a crash helmet and maintaining throughout the movie a squintygrimace that indicated his jockey shorts could have been two sizes twosmall. Julia Roberts's acting indicated she never wanted to be in thefilm to begin with. After subjecting myself to this picture, equivalentto self-flagellation, I regret that Hanks ever got home from being a"Castaway."

Zero conflict -- other than a serious discredit to community college instructors.

Comedy authority Stan Freberg said once, and I agree, that humor needsto be based in reality. Unfortunately the reality thatdirector-screenwriter-star Tom Hanks has constructed for himself hereis that convenient target of community college as a collection ofuninterested losers who try the instructors' patience to the extremethat he or she, much like leading-lady prof played by Julia Roberts, isangry, cynical -- yet at the same time apathetic -- and something of atippler. Along comes Tom Hanks as Larry Crowne who, as anewly-unemployed middle-ager among the weeds of youth, somehow(osmosis?) introduces the unique perspective that age, intelligence andlife experience can bring to continuing adult education. As Larry/Hanks struggles with his early attempts in the class, that ofconversational speechmaking, we see Julia Roberts' character roll hereyes upward and refine her growing contempt as the younger folk in theclass give supposedly insubstantial talks such as shopping andcomparing one Star Trek series to another. Well, what should they bedoing instead? In the meantime the instructor herself, as far as theaudience can see, contributes nothing.Under the circumstances these kids are making a valiant, sincereeffort. Okay, the one guy had crib notes written on the palm of hishand.By the way -- has anyone else figured this out -- there is nothingunusual about older adults, intelligent or otherwise, who return toschool and find the real, practical self-enrichment they seek. Thisfalseness of the film's primary concept is an embarrassing display ofhow little Hanks, et al, grasp the everyday realities which, to themovie audience, are dirt-common.I'd forgive any of the wrong turns taken in this film if it were funny.I didn't laugh once.Subplot that Roberts' character's own marriage is deteriorating (gee Iwonder why), other than making her available to LC as a love interest, has, like so many other story elements (the motor scooter "gang," theeternal garage sale next door, waste of George Takei's good characterwork as poor man's John Houseman in Larry's other class -- wasn't Larrysupposed to be taking three classes?) little or no integration withrest of story.Near end of picture Julia's character says to Larry/Hanks "You're agreat student" and he says "You're a great teacher." No she isn't! Thefirst and only time she shows the remotest interest in her job is fiveminutes before the final exam, when she has the students do a mildaerobic exercise to loosen up.It is, rather, the very fact that community college instructors don'tmake much money and don't find intellectual gold at the end of alltheir hard work that we know that they do care. My impression, and I'msure many will agree, is that, if a student gives the slightestindication that he or she is trying to learn, a community collegeinstructor will bend over backwards to give that person an education.Tom Hanks as director is out of touch with human society to a degreeunprecedented since Kubrick in Eyes Wide Shut. One can only assume heagreed to this project as part of a deal to let him do something goodnext. Turner and Hooch 2? Will Hooch even return Hanks' phone calls after this?

Slowe with an "E"

The opening credits of this movie were great! Names fly by as LarryCrowne (Hanks) is picking up garbage, stocking shelves with a smile, and cleaning puke off a mechanical horsey which instantly makes it easyto like the hard-working Crowne. As the credits finish the "powers thatbe" call in Hanks for a talk. The leadership team of the store informsCrowne he doesn't have the schooling for promotion and fire him. It iseasy to relate with the frustration and bewilderment of Crowne as heponders his next step.Sadly the movie bogs down and loses steam. Not a lot happens and ittakes a long time for it to happen. Hanks and Roberts save the moviefrom being painfully slow and move my classification to tolerable. The weirdest part of the movie was Crowne's friendship with the motorbike gang leader Talia. For some random reason Talia adopts Crowne as amissing father figure/lost puppy/charity case thing. It's weirdlyflirtatious, mostly pointless, and never explained. My guess is Taliagave the movie a legitimate way to make-over Crowne from lamedepartment manager to the hip achieve your dreams American dreamCrowne. This is a feel good, romantic comedy that you can skip.

A potentially great movie.

This movie is fluff. It touches on serious themes but stops short fromdealing with these themes forthrightly. Tom Hanks and Julia Robertsprovide good performances but nothing special. The attempt to makelight of serious topics just does not work. Mr. Hanks had anopportunity to make a really great movie dealing with serious subjectsand instead produces a tepid, mediocre and superficial movie. There isabsolutely nothing funny about a man losing his job and home. There isabsolutely nothing about a jaded college instructor who abandons allethical considerations. This is tragic and should have been treated assuch. Instead, Mr. Hanks tries to play it safe by skirting thesesubjects without developing them further. That's too bad because themovie could have gone in that direction instead of pandering for cheaplaughs. Larry Crowne is a tragic character and is a symbol of what hasbeen happening to people across the United States. However, "what if"is not the same as "what is" with negative results.

A great movie about real life

Look at the movies out right now. How many of them are about things that you can actually relate to. As I write this, there is a 300 million dollar movie about a guy who can fly with a ring, another about a teacher who likes to smoke pot, yet a fourth movie in a drag pirates of the Caribbean series. I'm not saying some of those movies aren't good, my point is that none of them are relatable to real life. Larry Crowne is a movie about a guy who losses his job and goes to college to get some skills back. Its a VERY light movie, but everything in it is very relatable. Tom Hanks after 10 years goes back to making a movies about what the average guy goes through right now, and that is something missing out of hollywood at the moment. Its cheerful, its relaxed, and as always his interaction with the other characters is what makes the movie entertaining. I wish there were more movies like this out. Its the best movie I have seen this year bv far.

Charming film with minor bumps along the way

As a major Tom Hanks fan, I decided to watch Larry Crowne despite thelackluster reviews from the critics. I'm glad I did. Although stallingin places, the movie leaves you with enough charm and innocence thatmakes it all worthwhile. Larry Crowne (Tom Hanks) loses his job at U-Mart in the opening scenes, leaving the audience with an instant desire to see him prevail. Heenrolls in a local community college and quickly crosses paths with anew lifestyle (thanks to the help of hippie student-turned-best-friendTalia (Gugu Mbatha-Raw)). Meanwhile, a middle aged professor (Julia Roberts) with a loser husbandand a growing cynicism with her students becomes the teacher forCrowne's Speech class. The ROM COM then kicks in. Where Crowne falls short is among pointless interactions withcharacters that seem dry in comparison to the main leads. Larry'sfriendship with Talia and especially her scooter crew comes off asawkward, and his relationship with next door neighbor Lamar (Cedric theEntertainer) is unclear. In fact, the movie is at it's best when thescreen is shared by Hanks and Roberts only. The most memorable scenescome from these two, then are brushed away again once other characterscome into play.Overall, Crowne is a charming movie with witty humor and a leave-feeling-happy quality. It's a shame the script didn't make more use ofthe two veterans and didn't scrap the meaningless fluff in between, butoverall the film comes as a welcome entry in a 3D plot less summer.
