Loved it

I just want to say that i like this movie because its old style and ithought they don't make like them any more. The whole man ignores hisfamily then realizes their value thing, and the animal thing too, soyou may ask why should i watch it if theirs lots of other movies withbasically the same story, my answer would be you cant get enoughbecause we need this type of spirit, because if this was real lifethings may not have turned out that happy. And if you feel like youwatched this movie a dozen times before well you're looking at it a bitsuperficially. Again i say its an original movie although the idea wayused before because it did everything in its own way and did not feelgeneric. The movie is great for adults too. Oh..one last thing, I wouldtake that movie over any of the three Chipmunks movies anytime.

Solid as an ice rock

This is or should be exactly what you can expect from this movie. Giventhe story (as slim as it is), the expectation shouldn't be high anyway. It is a Jim Carey vehicle. And as always you can rely on him to bringthe fun and deliver. From silly jokes to predictably story and character arch this stilldelivers quite well. As a Penguin lover myself, there is an extra bonusside to it all. I just think those little fellas are too cute. Most oftheir jokes get spoiled by the trailer of course, so maybe it is enoughto just watch that. Still if you want a nice family friendly film witha message, you can't go wrong with this one

Lovely Movie

It is a beautiful movie that promotes family. I loved the fact that the parents got together again, and how the main character learned to put his priorities straight to benefit himself, his children and his wife, whom he loved. It was a tender movie and one that brings out the true message, which is; That in broken homes there are no winners!

Can't wait to see it?

But I'll be there. Jim Carrey is funny even if he's not trying to be. Plus, I love those little critters. Let's go, let's go, let's go, let's go....

mr.poppers penguins

This review is from: Mr. Popper's Penguins (DVD) It was a terrible DVD. It stopped for no reason at certain points. We thought it might be our machine. Our grandson then took it to his house and the same thing happened. We were totally disgusted. It was something that would occur with a bargain store purchase. As a matter of fact, we should get a credit back to our account! How about it?

Perfect family fare for all ages

I'm not a huge fan of Jim Carey, but I was pleasantly surprised withhim in this film. The story is predictable, but it's familiar andcomfortable. I'm a Senior citizen who accompanied a young house guestto the theater, and I found myself laughing and clapping with delight. When this comes out on DVD, I'm buying a copy for myself for frequentvisitors who come with children; and I'll also buy a copy for a nearbynursing home. The residents might not be able to follow the story, butthey will enjoy the antics of the penguins...and they won't even needtheir hearing aids! It's refreshing to watch a movie that doesn'toffend with language, nudity, or extreme violence.

Cute But Carrey Is Used Incorrectly

Hollywood should know by now that Jim Carrey is his own actor andshould not be set aside in a movie if he is the main character. Iexplained this before in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995). In theAce Ventura sequel, Carrey kept the character the same except he wasexposed to a factor that made him not as funny as the original. Thatfactor was another character of importance in the story line. Thescreenwriters should have thought twice about that move because thesequel ended up more than half as comical as the first. That's what'sdone wrong in this film.Jim Carrey plays Mr. Popper, a man with an abandoned childhood whonever got to see his father often because he was out exploring things. So he grows up to be a stinky father, or ex-father I should say, whoreally doesn't have any friends. He doesn't know how to communicatewith his children and it's rough trying to please his ex-wife. It's notuntil he has a penguin delivered to his apartment; none other than fromhis father, what a surprise. It's funny because in the beginning of thefilm, although the viewer will be able to tell that Mr. Popper is atroubled man, it is funny to see him try to convince his clients. It'swhat Carrey's known for, making us laugh because HE is the thing thatmakes us laugh.Right when the penguins start showing up on screen, things don'ttotally go downhill, but they do slump below the Carrey entertainmentmeter. Why? Because Carrey is then used as a tool for the penguins andnot the penguins themselves. Seriously, who thought of the poop jokesin this film? How childish could this get? That was one element Idespised. Yes, it is cute and adorable to see little tiny waddlingpenguins shooting out on ice sculptures and riding down streams ofwater but Jim Carrey can do that too (The Cable Guy (1996)). Andsomething like that only occurs around the end of the film. This filmisn't totally bad but its the screenplay doesn't allow Carrey to bephysically funny enough. What I did enjoy about this film was how the movie played out. Mr.Popper is a sad individual. He does his work only to please his bossesand to make a living. But when the penguins come into his life, thingsturn around for him, and who doesn't love a happy ending. The penguinsreunite him and his family: he can get along with his children and hisex-wife falls in love with him again. The only other thing I wanted topoint was what happened to Mrs. Popper's date? He was on screen acouple times and then he all of a sudden, he disappears. Okay,...whathappened? Besides this little faux pas and what I explained before, Iwas satisfied by this average Jim Carrey vehicle. The music was nicebut nothing special either.Jim Carrey has his funny moments but once again instead of being theone to make the audience laugh at someone/thing else, he's the butt endof the joke (pun intended). It's a cute story and has a nice finish butthe end result is less than real comedic entertainment from Jim Carreybecause we know he's done better in other films.

Mr. Popper's Penguins is POPPREFFIC!!!

Took my 7 year old daughter to see this movie today & Im really glad we went! From the previews I thought the movie was going to be boring & lame, but I was pleasantly surprised with the movie! The movie ran at a fast & very entertaining pace...The theater audience laughed, laughed & then laughed some more...The movie has comedy for sure, but also tells a great story & has a few very good life lessons in it...The lengths Carrey takes to take care of these Penguins is just AWESOME!!!Jim Carrey did a fantastic job as the lead actor...He shows signs of his old hillarious humor from his early films, but is not sooooo over the top in this film as he was in past films...He showed true heart & was very believable in his role!!!The Penguins were unbelievably funny & simply amazing! They must have had some serious training! The supporting acting was pefectly done by Mr. Poppers kids & ex wife...Overall I give this movie an A... I would recommend going to see this movie while its in the theaters...I would also recommend it for adults & children...Thanks for reading my review!

Cute but can't we have a different storyline?

I think it's a pretty cute movie but the thing is, the storyline is exactly the same as the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie and the Smurfs movie. I am 11 years old and am getting a little sick of movies with the same storyline. I'd rent it but I don't think it's a must- buy.

Jim Carrey, with penguins in a PG rated movie..what else do you need to know ?

Me and my wife took our 3 kids to this one, we wanted to enjoy a niceSaturday afternoon together watching a cute family flick, and thismovie delivered what we were expecting. our kids laughed and had a lotof fun, and i found myself enjoying most parts of it.Story is very familiar, about a business man " Carrey " who is alwaysbusy and away from his kids, then suddenly he inherits penguins thatchanges him and his life,..i guess you sort of know from here where thestory is headed. a very simple, and might sound silly story, butexecuted in a very good manner, that made it better than your averagefamily movie. Carrey was funny as always, and added a lot to the overall enjoyment of the film.It is a family movie, starring Jim Carrey with penguins and is ratedPG, what really are you expecting ? it is exactly what you would expectfrom this type of film. Just grab your loved ones, head to thetheaters, and enjoy this movie for what it is, don't take it seriously, and you will have a great time !!

Loved this film!!

I thought this film would be too formulaic to really work, but it does work, and very well at that. It completely works on every level. Great casting. Great script. One of those feel-good comedies, fun to watch with your kids.

Jim carrey and the penguins made the movie

what i was worried about most is that Jim carrey would be underrated inthis movie. and what i mean by that is the penguins would be the centerof attention and forget Jim carrey. he wasn't as funny as he would bein his other films but more funny than i thought he would be. thepenguins, easily the funniest. now this movie is about tom popper (Jimcarrey) who receives a box from his deceased father that has onepenguin. he calls to get rid of it and a few days later a box comes inwhich tom thinks they brought to ship the penguin back to wherever itcame from. not. here comes five other penguins. now he is faced withmore problems because when his two kids and ex wife find out, they lovethe penguins. so he keeps them. now he turns his home into Antarctica.snow, below freezing, fish, the whole nine yards. this of course is aJim carrey movie, so you want to be careful how you put his characterin a family film like this. his character to me was not suited for allages. maybe young kids, but remember older people will see this movieto and the character he played was not for adults. yet he was stillpretty funny. in this family film as we all would predict tom popper isnot a good father. he got divorced and does not connect with his twokids. wow big surprise. i get tired of movies like this being sopredictable. it was a predictable movie to me. i knew how it was goingto play out. but it was still funny, and a great comedy to take yourchildren to see. grown ups probably wont connect with the film, becauseof its younger type comedy. you may like Jim carrey. i don't know. hewas OK to me. wait for it on DVD i say.

Retrospective Reviews- Mr. Popper's Penguins (2011)

Another year, another Jim Carrey movie hits our screens, and of course, many of us saw it. Being a HUGE Jim Carrey fan, I can safely say that Isaw it and LOVED it! So, let's not waste any time, this is 'Mr.Popper's Penguins'.PROS: The first thing I'd like to point out that, for a kids film, thishad a pretty solid, funny script. The jokes weren't cheap and made melaugh a lot. Jim Carrey was on top form (as always) and still provesthat he is the hilarious, rubber faced weirdo we all know and love from'Ace Ventura'. The casting was good, we had some good child actors likeMadeline Carroll and Max Cotton, they were believable and okay actors, too. Then, I was surprised by seeing the beautiful Carla Gugino, whowas as good as always. The effects for the penguins were fun andimaginative, also. But, the real penguins were funny, too. But, theBEST part of this film has to be Jim Carrey, he's just so funny inanything he puts himself in. Even at his grand old age of 49, he stillpulls off playing the nice guy, who is a bit stupid, too! His actingwas great, and he showed the audience that he still has the power to bea great comedian and a fantastic actor, too and that his career isn'tfading in the slightest!CONS: Like 'Cars 2', the script could have used a little bit oftweaking. But, other than that, it was a funny, heartwarming comedythat I deeply recommend for die- hard Carrey fans.Starring: Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll, Maxwell PerryCotton, Angela Lansbury and Philip Baker HallDirected by: Mark Waters
