Plot Summary:
Valerie (Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valeries older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. For years, the people have maintained an uneasy truce with the beast, offering the creature a monthly animal sacrifice. But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomons arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon...

This one's a retake on 'Twilight.' I'd hang out in a different hood if I had the chance.

This review is from: Red Riding Hood (DVD) I also liked this movie it reminded me of the tale I heard as a kid ! I didn't think that the wolf would actually be Red Riding Hood's father as a wearwolf !

At least Twilight has something resembling passion -- Red Riding Hood is barely a sheep in wolf's clothing.

This movie is targeted more towards young adults. You can tell by the modern-day language and the Twilight-esque cinematography, but that is probably due mostly to the fact that the films have the same director. I think the characters should have had accents or at the very least they should've spoken proper English, but, again, tweens were the main target for this flick. They probably won't care much about those kinds of little details with sexy Peter and Henry vying for Valerie's affections. Sex-crazed teeny boppers drool over a good, hot love triangle, but I have to admit that I certainly enjoy that, too. Aside from the steamy stuff, I did like the mystery of the wolf. I thought I had him/her figured out, but my guesses were incorrect. That made me happy, because I am tired of predictable movies these days. Hollywood needs more original ideas. This movie is far from being totally original, but I appreciate its good twist on a classic. On another note, I love Gary Oldman, and I think he is always a great addition to any film no matter what role he plays. He does quirky, weird characters very well. I think his part as the priest was extinguished a little quickly, and I was hoping to see him through to the end (even though he was kind of a bad guy). So that was a little disappointing. The movie's ending was kind of left a little open yet it was satisfying. I rented this for a buck, but I kind of wish I'd gone to see it on the big screen.

Don't rent the DVD. Warner Bros/Appian/Random must have taken a queuefrom Disney because you can not skip past the all the promotional krapat the beginning of the DVD. And there's a lot of it. After elevenminutes of watching this drivel (think of the brain cleansing scene in"Clockwork Orange") we got so pi**ed off we didn't even want to watchthe movie. So we popped the DVD out went back to regular TV.These guys must think we're so desperate to watch their high-art filmthat we're willing to sit through teen movie trailers, advertisementsfor some sort of frequent buyer program (don't know what it was about,we had the sound turned off), and then an homage to film history. I'm not watching, buying or renting any more krap fromWarner/Appian/Random Films.

Like listening to an alcoholic deadbeat dad read a knock-off version of the famed fable to his inattentive, angry offspring, Red Riding Hood is no fun.

Everybody lies. Everybody has secrets. Some live in isolation. Othersgo about their lives never revealing their true identities. From writerDavid Johnson (Orphan) and director Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen,Lords of Dogtown) comes this chillingly unpredictable spin on theclassic children's tale. Set in a small, medieval village that isplagued by a werewolf, a young woman, Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is tornbetween two men: Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), a woodcutter she has been inlove with since childhood, much to her parents displeasure, and Henry(Max Irons), the wealthy welder her parents have arranged for her tomarry. Not wanting to separate, Valerie and Peter plan to runawaytogether until getting word that the prowling werewolf has killed hersister. Seeking revenge, a famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (GaryOldman), is called in only to deliver the villagers some unexpected badnews... the werewolf takes human form by day and it could be any one ofthem. From start to finish, Hardwicke takes you on this gripping, carefully crafted and well-written ride that leaves even the smartestof audience detectives baffled as you just cannot peg who the werewolfis, even if you think you know. Along with the incredible leadingplayers, a well respected supporting cast that includes VirginiaMarsden, Billy Burke and Julie Christie, all take you on theseunsuspected twists and turns that inevitably leave you suspicious ofeveryone... only to have your jaw drop when the conclusion is reached.

It's shocking that for all of the advances in computer generated imagery, they still can't make a realistic looking werewolf. Lon Chaney's original 1941 werewolf far outshines the hairy beast here.

A boring mess, neither scary nor sexy enough to justify its innovations.

I felt compelled to write a review about this film since there is somany bad ratings on IMDb, although I guess this review will go to thebottom of the pile since there's already loads of reviews on here forthis film already.Anyways, I'll keep this short but after reading the reviews I thoughtthe film was going to be rubbish, but I actually really enjoyed it, youcan forget for a second the premise in which this film is set and justpicture it as a mystery/thriller, which is the best type of film in myopinion because it gets you excited and guessing all the way through!Who is the killer? Is it him! is it her!, you keep guessing all thetime, brilliant, I thought the acting was great, the story was great, directing, cinematography, everything was awesome. This film gave methe same feelings I got when I watched M Knight Shalamans The Villageand Lady in the water etc, the feeling I get from all his films, and Ido love all his films...I know a lot of people don't like lady in thewater or the village or the happening, but I liked them all.Anyways I guess all I can say is just try the film for yourself andignore the reviews, I started ignoring the reviews years ago...if Ilistened to reviews I wouldn't have gone and watched Battle Las Angelasother week, which I thought was amazing by the way.Thats all I've got to say, I give the film (red riding hood) 7.5/10, Icant give it higher because its not as good as avatar/district 8/starwars/inception haha.Scott Kelly, Leeds, England, X

There's no good reason for watching this movie after terrible reviews when it was originally released. Still, Amanda Seyfried is always easy on the eyes. Then there's Gary Oldman, Virginia Madsen and Julie Christie. Can it really be that bad? Well, yes it can. For every actor in the caliber of those mentioned above there's Max Irons and Shiloh Fernandez as emotionless and stone faced potential suitors for Valerie (Seyfried). Hell, they make Edward from "Twilight" seem exciting. Speaking of "Twilight", director Catherine Hardwicke from this film also directed the first and perhaps only watchable "Twilight". I guess she was trying to capture some of the "magic" in this clunker. The sets are crummy, the script is painful, the fairy tale clichés are horrible, the acting is bad, the special effects aren't special, and the sex is non-existent. I mean, what's the point?

Sexualising a beloved children's fairy tale seems an odd move, but when flanked by an unoriginal story and lacklustre performances, that appears to be the least of the film's problems.
01 May 2012
Hardwicke was able to curate her main characters into delivering enjoyable performances, but everything else is kind of a mess.

So the movie wasn't total crap, but not at all original. I kept comparing it to the 1985 movie The Company of Wolves The Company of Wolveswhich I really did like, despite it's age. Nice idea for a movie, but could have been better.

The film did try in some respect to add something to the story of RedRiding Hood. However, this is just Red Riding Hood, it's difficult toadapt it into a feature. Freeway and Company of Wolves did it, but thisis a Twilight version. We have 2 guys going after the same girl andthen there's some mythological creature messing things up. Apparentlythis wolf has been killing for 2 generations, so why people aren'tmoving away from this village is beyond me. Instead they feed it. Thefilm soon drops the romance angle and focuses on Gary Oldman as hebrings his own brand of werewolf hunting to the village. Oldman makeseveryone turn against each other in what is probably the leastproductive way of tackling a werewolf problem. It certainly tries anddraw parallels with the war on terror. With added elephant contraptiontorture. It has contemporary music and modern looking guys, I oftenforgot what time period it's set in. The best thing of all is themystery aspect of the film. It managed to cast suspicions over most ofthe characters, and though you will probably guess who the wolf is,you'll certainly second guess yourself.

Oh, Grandmother, what a big, bad movie you have.
24 April 2012
I mean where do I begin? A movie so bad Gary Oldman couldn't save it! First of the look of the film is pointless: it's too clean. People, in whatever time period the movie is based in, would not look so clean, neat or done up. There is no grittiness to the film -it looked like they were on sets thru the whole movie -very poor filming. The dialogue: well I can't write what I would really say because Amazon would kick it back, but the dialogue in this movie is cheesy with a capital "C". There is no point, no menace, no heart, no pulling you in.The language is modern English set in this time period -beyond retarded, with no accents (except Oldman's). It's like "we're all speaking in perfect modern English, we're too clean, wearing nice clothes while 'fearing' a werewolf" -oooooh, yaaawwn... Even bad accents would have been preferable. The acting is atrocious -hands down. The word "wooden" is given an unjust definition when describing the acting in this movie. You know those awful movies that are on the SyFy channel? They have better acting than this piece of trash. This movie, pardon the awkward comparison, is like porn for teenage girls -hence the "Twilight" comparison (which I've never seen but have a younger sister who has). I half expected them to whip out an iphone & start texting or check their Facebook page. There is nothing redeeming about this movie other than Amanda Seyfried looks cute while she's not doing anything. An utter waste of time and money -luckily I rented it so I only wasted a few bucks. If you buy this, you're dedicated (or a teenage girl)! Catherine Hardwicke, who is the director, should be ashamed of making such tripe... (oh, and yes, I do know she directed the first dimwit... -er "Twilight").

There are 2 things that will put off the average viewer from this film as soon as it starts. If you can't get past them you'll likely hate it.1) The non-accents. People automatically assume that any period piece must run with an English accent. But if you want to be more accurate, they should've had a German accent since the tale was originally set in Germany. This is not a period piece since it is a fairy tale. Possibly a consideration for it's target audience.2) The relatively modern dialogue they used. Likely because this was meant for Teens, going archaic will probably be lost on them.To be fair these 2 issues did bother me at first viewing. But since I also watched the Alternate version and the comments version, I did get past those 2 issues and I found the film more enjoyable and satisfying. The thing that really bugged me though is the crossbow man with the crusader helm. It's just wrong to combine those 2 things. Also Father Auguste was just too odd. This is clearly not a big budget spectacular. Not too many overbearing characters. But it held my attention thanks to some of the leads.

Adamantly refuses to provide any wit, humor or fun, concerning itself mostly with the heroine's taxing dilemma of picking between the rural village's two best looking boys.
23 April 2012
The once promising filmmaker has created two of the worst supernatural thrillers in recent memory in Twilight and now the excruciating Red Riding Hood.
