I've seen the previous films and loved them, so I prayed I'd think thesame of this. It did far better than I expected, and will be lookingforward to the next movie to come. I think they embraced the addedcharacter Eustace well. I think he was the best character of them alland also the talking rat. I found Eustace funny, and entertained megreatly. I think they should a changed Eustace of the course of thefilm. I think it was clever the way they added in Susan and Peter, asthey could no longer go to Narnia anymore. I have never read any of theNarnia books by C.S Lewis, and like to wait to the movies, and I'm notmuch of a reader. I had fun watching it with my family, and was ratherdisappointed when it ended. - Narise

A decent undertaking of a much-beloved book. It takes some majorliberties with the story, but retains many of the locations, challenges, and concepts from the book.I was about 10 minutes into the film when I had to drop all my thoughtsabout how the movie was differing from the book. After that I enjoyedthe film more and was able to appreciate what they did with theconversion to film. It's unusual to have a story with no specificantagonist, just a grand quest for exploration & information. Makes youthink of the frontier days when people went exploring just to seewhat's out there! If you didn't like Eustace, then kudos to WillPoulter for making that character as annoying as he is in the book. Thefriendship that formed between noble Reepicheep and awful Eustace is atouching example of what a little love & care can do to somebody'sheart (that, and turning into a dragon..haha).But please, people... why should the fact this movie has Christianallegories be pointed out as a negative? This was based upon aChristian book and has some great messages to take to heart. If CharlesDawkins (famed Athiest) book "God Delusion" were made into a moviewould people gripe about it's atheistic leanings? C'mon.Yes, I'm more inclined to the book... it's fantastic. I'm happy withthe movie conversion, and think the writers did a decent job convertingthis book into a movie experience (total length, ending climacticbattle, etc.). But if you really want a beautiful experience and senseof adventure, pick up the book and read it through!

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Best one since the first movie. This movie has the most overt Christian themes and ideas of the three and has as much action as the first movie. My 8 & 5 year olds absolutely love these movies and I appreciate the fact that I do not have to worry about the content to which they are exposed.

This review is from: The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (Single-Disc Edition) (DVD) I'm a huge fan of Narnia; the books and the movies. I love the prior two Narnia movies and I love this one as well. I saw it twice in the theater and have watched it three times since buying this DVD. Each time I watch it, I'm left feeling inspired, because one of the themes of the movie is defeating the darkness in yourself and also as Lucy finds out, not to run from who you are. The colors and filming of the movie are just gorgeous as well. There are several things changed/added from the book, but it's all very much in the spirit of Narnia and I think it adds a deeper level to the characters, more excitement, and more meaning. Don't get me wrong...I love the book just the way it is, but I think for a movie the things they added work really great for a movie version. I won't go into the things that have been changed, as other reviewers have already covered that. I found it very moving the way Caspian finally comes to terms with the loss of his father. At the end he says how too long he's focused on what was taken from him rather than what he was given. Before entering Dark Island, I like how Caspian tells the crew not to give in, as the very fate of Narnia depends on them. It's so very true how one decision can change the whole course of history. I also thought it added another level of interest with Jadis, the White Witch, appearing to Edmund several times...it shows how the memory of that still haunts him. But, he overcomes it as well. The person who played Eustace handled the part so well! My whole family really liked Eustace! I like how at the end when Lucy, Edmund, Caspian, and the crew are battling the sea serpent and Eustace is taking the sword to the Stone Table and it shows those two scenes back and forth and how the battle coincides with Eustace struggling to lay down the sword. When he fights off the mist and lays it down and that blue light shines up from the table, it gives me chills...it's such a powerful moment. Anyway, I just wanted to share with others what the movie meant to me and how much I love it!

The Chronicles of Narnia - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010) iseasily the best movie of the series (so far anyway!) and that says alot seeing as how much I loved the rest of the series so far. I am abig C.S. Lewis fan and loved the first movies in this series but TheVoyage of the Dawn Treader is great, the actors are really coming intotheir own as their characters and the story is great, with a lot ofgreat action as well as interaction between the characters. It is justa real shame that it took like three years between these movies forthis new one to come out but it was well worth the wait because it wasa great movie and it's going to be hard to see the rest of the serieslive up to these high standards.

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Two-Disc Edition) (DVD) I found the movie to be lots of fun. Yes, it's different from the book, but the movie presents a unifying theme that allows the story to be told in a visual, adventurous way. The movie itself gets a good 4 stars, which means this review is marked for two stars because...The packaging for this particular double pack gets 1 star. The discs are actually glued onto the package. Yes, glued. And not only glued, but glued within an oddly designed cardboard sleeve that can't be fully opened. Once removed, the blu-ray disc is unplayable; the glue won't come off easily without scratching the disc. I didn't even try to force the DVD disc out of the package as I'm guessing the same problem will happen there as well (and I'd rather not risk breaking it trying to pry it out). Oddly, the digital download disc is the most easily accessible and best packaged of the three. Horrible, horrible, horrible packaging.

The movie is great - but the cardboard packaging stinks. The DVD was spattered with some kind of glue which I could not get off without destroying it. It is too clumsy to fit in my cabinet. I wish I could buy it in just the regular blue plastic case. I can't seem to find it packaged that way.

From director Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, Extreme Measures,Enigma, The World Is Not Enough), I thought this wouldn't be thatgreat, and I didn't realise there were meant to be only two of thechildren from previous films, but I watched when I saw the critics gaveit a higher rating compared to the other two. Basically the Pevensiesiblings Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley) are spendinga dull holiday with their cousin Eustace Clarence Scrubb (WillPoulter), when they are suddenly transported to Narnia, picked up inthe ocean by the ship the Dawn Treader. King Caspian (Ben Barnes) andlarge brave mouse Reepicheep (Simon Pegg, replacing Eddie Izzard) aretravelling to save the seven lords of the kingdom who Miraz banished,so they find the Lone Islands, where people are sold as slaves. WhileCaspian and Edmund are in prison, Lucy and Eustace are sold as slaves, any slaves not sold to people are taken out to ocean and disappear inthe mysterious green mist, but all of them are rescued. On anotherisland Lucy gets captured by the Dufflepuds, and the force her into amagician's lair, where she finds a book of incantations and reads oneor two to create snow and beauty, and one particular spell forces Aslanthe lion (Liam Neeson) to remind her that it is because of her Narniawas found in the first place. Next they land on a volcanic island, where Caspian, Edmund and Lucy discover a magical pool that turnsanything into pure gold, and Eustace finds some treasure which he plansto steal, only to be turned into a dragon that briefly attacks the DawnTreader. They eventually find Aslan's Table where the swords they haveretrieved are meant to be placed, but there is still one missing, wherethey are met by star turned beauty Lilliandil (Laura Brent) who guidesthem round the dark island, and they find the last of the seven lords. He warns them not to think of a fear or it will become reality, butEdmund fails to do this and they are attacked by a sea serpent. Aslanchanges Eustace back to into a human after being wounded, and he placesthe last sword on the table, causing the mist to disappear and awakethe sleeping lords. The final scene sees all the heroes with Aslan on abeach with a large wave of water, Caspian refuses to go to the otherside where return is not possible, but Reepicheep goes, and Lucy,Edmund and Eustace return home. Also starring Anna Popplewell as SusanPevensie, William Moseley as Peter Pevensie and Tilda Swinton as Jadis,The White Witch. The two young stars from the two previous films arestill reliable, the new addition Poulter is good fun, and the othercharacters are likable, the story has some memorable moments, and ofcourse the special effects are crucial for plenty of action, I guess Ican see why this four stars rather than three, it is a worthwhileaction fantasy adventure. It was nominated the Golden Globe for BestOriginal Song for Carrie Underwood's "There's A Place For Us". Good!

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This is a one star review solely because of the packaging. There is a sticky kind of glue on the bottom of the main disc, and it causes the movie to skip along in places, and that's after I cleaned off most of the glue (I do not have a DVD cleaning kit, having never needed one). I tend to think that the reason the glue is on there is that the disc is very brutally wedged in there, causing a too tight squeeze. Having gotten this from amazon, it's not like I can very easily return this, as I could if I had bought it at the nearest department store. It's highly irritating to have to put up with something that could very easily be avoided.Which brings up a point: Does anyone really think that packaging like this is a selling point? Seriously? The outward packaging, yes, I can see that, it can attract the casual shopper. But inside the case please just get the disc(s) in there solidly and leave everything else be. There was absolutely no need for this to happen. Thanks FOX, that's a trip to the post office and 30 minutes of my life I'm never getting back. The movie was fine, decently acted and adequately scripted, and worth the money I paid for it. No complaints there.

I was SO looking forward to the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and wassorely disappointed. The film felt like they took the original story, chopped it up, thenthrew it in a blender with seven magical swords and some ridiculousgreen mist! While the film stayed true to main themes of the story, much of thecharacter development and purpose to each of the minor island storieswas lost. Unfortunately this meant that most of the magic of the storywas lost as well.I gave the film 6 stars due to the redeeming qualities that were thestunning visuals, some excellent acting (notably by Will Poulter asEustace), and a beautifully executed final scene. If you haven't read the book, then you may enjoy this film immensely, but if you are a true Narnia fan, don't go in with very highexpectations.

I never read the books by C.S. Lewis but have seen the movies. While I enjoyed all three, it is important to remember that Hollywood rarely, if ever, copies books exactly as written. There is too much difference between the two medias to expect such an exact copying of books. The Narnia movies are probably no different. That said, I liked the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. It isn't the best of the three movies, but still retains the quality of the other two.

It's been an overdose of fantasy for me in the last few days I guess.First, in anticipation of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I,I watched all the previous ones at a stretch. For this, I had to do asimilar thing. Else how would it make any sense ??? The Narnia series,it seems, is shaping up to be the replacement of the Harry Potterseries. We all know that Harry Potter is gonna be done with by the nextyear. That will leave us with the Narnia series, and with four moremovies to go, I suppose that's gonna last a long while till anotherfantasy movie series pops up.The movie begins with the Pevensies being transported to Narnia "leastwhen they expected". This time, they have their cousin Eustace withthem who takes some time to accepting the Narnian world filled withtalking creatures and other such wonders. He reacts similar to how thePevensies did when they first saw Narnia, only he's more scared thansurprised. Since they've landed in Narnia unexpectedly, there has to bea reason for it. And there is, and a supposedly good one - one whichwill not only test their battling skills what with dragons, serpentsand storms on the way, but also bring them face to face with theirinner demons and fears. As far as the similarity of the movie's plot with the book goes, Ifrankly admit to having no idea regarding that. I've viewed the movieas a movie, as a sequel to the first two and as such, won't be able tocomment on how well the movie follows the plot of the book. On thesurface of it however, the plot is fairly basic but filled with toomany characters to confuse someone who isn't familiar with the books. All the cast members perform well though the star of the show has to beReepicheep the mouse - he is so endearing that you'd often findyourself rooting for him. And then again there's Aslan the Lion who, inmy opinion, is the best (CGI) wonder ever created in the Narnian movieuniverse. His mere presence in a frame makes it stand out. He appearsresponsible, wise, calm and like a father figure to the Pevensies andothers - the character is so greatly conceived that his mere sightmakes you respect him. He truly has the aura of a king and rightfullydeserves to be one. And Liam Neeson does a fabulous job of voicing himas do the animators on making him appear life-like. And when the softand soothing background score plays in the background during hispresence, you're bound to feel a lump in your throat. You'll definitelyhear a child scream "Aslan" in the movie theater when he first arrives.Visually, the film is simply outstanding. Such is the richness of theeffects that it makes me wonder how on earth can the film be made on abudget of "just" $140 million. I mean, the amount of visual effectspresent in the film and the quality of each shot is simply brilliant -from the dragon to the serpent to the wide shots of The Dawn Treader tothe Islands to the waves to Reepicheep the mouse and finally, the greatAslan. Lighting, it seems has improved to the point that it isdifficult to tell what is CGI and what is real. The main musical themeshave been recycled from the past films which is a great thing sincethose themes were simply heart touching, especially Aslan's. The setdesign is also good although as mentioned, it is hard to distinguishbetween real and digital sets.Like many movies with excessive VFX, the movie tends to give a slightlymore focus to the effects (maybe because it is a children centricfilm). Although made for children, adults shouldn't find this a reasonto stay away from the movie. The movie might tend to get a bit boringat times. And the biggest drawback of the movie is the 3-D which, quitesimply, is as good as not there. By all means, you'd be better savingsome bucks and watching the movie in 2-D; it might as well also saveyou a headache. As a matter of fact, the commercial shown during mymovie screening had better 3-D that that found in this movie. Despiteits drawbacks, it is a good movie and can make for a good viewing with/ without family. If not for anything else, I recommend it, For Aslan!!!Score: 6.5 / 10

What is the primary and most important aspect of blu-ray disc packaging? To protect the disc(s) from damage while stored or when being removed from the packaging or returned to the packaging.Well, apparently Fox doesn't believe in that. This is the most pathetic packaging imaginable for a single title 3 disc set.It is cheap cardboard - and when Amazon ships it to you in an envelope, be prepared to find the top portion of the product to have been crushed. Then you can open it up to find 2 of the discs stored in flip out sleeves, so you can grab them with your grubby oily fingers to drag them out for playing. The 3rd disc is twisted onto a little rubber nubby glued onto a cardboard flap in the center. We've seen these before - they are pure junk! Can you avoid putting marks on the discs? Well, do not worry about it - because they already have marks on them from the Fox worker bees who put the discs into this awful packaging in the first place. Please don't tell me this approach to packaging was so Fox could include that pack of "collector postcards" in the package - the ones I just flipped into the recycle bin. Fox should fire the idiots who dreamed this debacle up.

Made for children movie! ! You have to dig deep into your imagination to enjoy this movie. Missing half of the characters from the original series. Made for young children who can imagine themselves as the very young characters joining an adventurous journey. Might as well make this an animated movie not just a movie that is in 3D.

I wasn't a big fan of the first Narnia. I walked out of there thinkingit was purely average and the story has been done countless timesbefore in other films. Having said that, I skipped out on the secondNarnia. The previews didn't convince me that I would change my opinionso I never bothered with it. Then years later I see the previews of thethird installment and thought, "Wow, this actually looks pretty good."It reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean in a way and some videogames that I played and decided to give it a go.The wifey and I had a date night with this and both of us walked out ofenjoying it very much. It didn't start out that way. The beginning ofthe movie, though okay, didn't exactly grab me. In fact, our heroes arewhisked away to Narnia quite early, and we are introduced to all themain characters of the movie right from the get go. The only ones thatstood out, to me, was that Useless character (at least that's what hisname sounds like) who, in spite of some rather bland characters andsometimes bland moments, sticks out among the rest. Even when a certainplot twist with his transformation occurs, he's still an interestingcharacter. He's really the best character in the movie, besides thatlion that I can think of. Maybe the swashbuckling rat and that humanbull would rank up there too.Between the drab moments, we get a lot of creative ideas like the landof invisible people and some mansion that can't be seen. Our heroeshave to go into some dangerous territory in search of seven lords thatcarry these swords that must be joined together to vanquish thedarkness and put balance into Narnia (I never knew what balanceactually means myself). Along the way, there are a lot of characters intheir party and some serious character development, especially withCaspian and Useless. There are a couple characters in the group that Ifelt was useless (pardon the pun) by the end of the movie. They havethis father join the group (with his stowaway daughter) that neverreally served much of a purpose. The fawn from the first one gets onboard but he's just there. He could have been left out and nothingwould be missed. One last thing I would like to mention is that I really enjoyed thisscore. Not too many movies (or video games) with an orchestratedsoundtrack have been noteworthy lately. The score isn't memorable byany means, but it was easy on the ears and it may be the firstsoundtrack in a while that I might just own.Oh, and I didn't see it in 3D. I hate 3D. I advise people to see thiswithout 3D, as well. Films should be enjoyed by their narrative andscope. They should draw you into the film by its storytelling, not witha gimmick. I hope filmmakers don't forget this. I'm afraid that will bethe Dawn Treader of movie-going.

This review is from: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (Two-Disc Edition) (DVD) As a kid, I couldn't get enough of the Narnia books, and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was my favorite. It featured seagoing adventure, island exploration, and some great humor with the old dwarf on the docks and the unforgettable Reepicheep. Imagine my excitement to hear the third Narnia movie would be made.Michael Apted lends the film a sure hand, and the children actors are all good in their roles, though the Eustace part is somewhat slapstick at points. The movie draws us into Narnia in a magical way, and I was thrilled to be there once more. With the arrival of the Dawn Treader, I knew I was in for some fun. And yes, in many ways, this third installment builds on the fun, warmhearted, good vs. evil elements of the first. While I personally liked "Prince Caspian," I enjoyed "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" a bit more, and so it was nice to see here that same imaginative and colorful version of our favorite fanciful land. Many of the book's strong points are on display. My few quibbles have to do with the quick romps past the Dufflepuds and some of the island sequences, with time spent instead on building a climactic ending. The ending does mostly succeed, but we've seen these types of conflicts with sea monsters before, and often more dramatically, such as in "Pirates of the Caribbean." My other complaint is that the dragon's peeling away that is so meaningful and symbolic in the book loses a lot of its power. The idea is present in the movie, but it backs away from the personal contact from Aslan. While this could be admittedly hard for small children to understand, it is so key to the scene's depth. We bought the two-disc edition for Easter. The second disc has about 45 minutes of extras, with some interviews, making of a scene, island information, and a sword-matching game. It's worth the extra $5, but it lacks the detail and complete world exploration that is found in the extra "Lord of the Ring" DVDs, for example.Overall, Apted gives us a thoroughly fun, funny, engaging, and heartwarming story. Although it set up a segue into "The Silver Chair" (another of my favorite Narnia books), it looks like the next movie, if it's to be made, will be "The Magician's Nephew." Either way, I hope this voyage continues.

A very good movie. "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is my favorite of CS Lewis's novels. It is an adventure story and is also a novel that asks deep questions about the meaning of life. This movie version is a great show, even though it does differ from the book at a few points. There is a green mist, an evil force, which is in the movie, but not in the book. However, to me, the mist represented temptation and the way evil can work to distort and corrupt. So in that way, it did fit as a visual style of a written concept. Also the 7 swords concept was not in the book either, but again I think this was used to help transfer a written story to a visual and auditory experience. Great acting, beautiful cinematography, pretty music, impressive special effects, and a well told story make this a fun movie. It may be a bit intense for young children. Overall "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" was a treat
