Storyline

Plot Summary:

After a serial killer named Red John murdered Patrick Janes wife and daughter, Jane dedicated his life to hunting down and killing Red John. To that end he gave up his lucrative pretense of being a psychic and joined the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a consultant to the team responsible for investigating the Red John case, led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon. Using Janes exceptional gift for observation and his mentalist tricks, the team is able to close an unprecedented number of cases, but Janes unconventional and often outright illegal methods also bring much censure down on Lisbons head, making his assistance both a blessing and a curse. Meanwhile, the hunt for Red John continues...

This show is for people like myself

I am very interested in the sort of mental tricks that are shown onthis show. Not that I want to be the guy, I'm more interested in whythe human brain works the way it does, and so far the tricks he usesare well based in reality...as strange as they are.As much as I like crime dramas, there are so many of them on TV rightnow. I wish they could have exposed the psychology to viewers in adifferent format, but on the flip side, I can't suggest a betteralternative either for the moment. For choosing an over-used format Itake two ratings off a perfect 10. As the last reviewer suggested theplots will have to get strange to be new.In contrast to the last reviewer, I do like the lead character a lot, probably because I understand more why he does the things he does.Simon Baker does a great job of acting as a Mentalist, from whom is hedrawing his inspiration from? They must have a consultant helping theshow. If you want to understand the show better, you may be interested inDerren Brown - Tricks of the Mind videos.

Fun for 1st half of 1st season

The first half of the first season was interesting. After that itbecame another episodic cop drama. The series used to be interestingwhen if let the viewer in on the secret, or how the mentalist picked upclues on his theories. The original story was also interesting, a manfutily searching for a serial-killer(who was probably dead). It lent areal tragic air to the hero. This sadly wasn't enough and the show andturned it into a strange xfiles thing which destroyed any suspension ofbelief. It also stopped sharing the mentalist's vision into why hethought someone was guilty and began magicly having the protagonistpoint out the guilty party (becuase he's super smart)instead ofactually being smart(the show).Fun for the 1st season then ditch it.For smart and interesting TV go with Wonderfalls, Dead like me orFirefly.

Simon Baker Carry's the Show

Excellent show, sometimes you kind of know who the culprit is but itsstill an amazing show... Patrick Jane aka Simon Baker is justincredible with his one liners and his wittiness... The whole Red JohnCase makes it more interesting and keeps you intrigued for more..The Chemistry between Rigsby and Van Pelt is just class.. Lisbon i findis kind of very week at times.. That's the only negative point that icould find.. she needs to be more dominating at times but is not..The whole show overall is decent and its Simon Baker's unbelievableacting and screen presence that carry's the show along..Overall i loved it and def watch it every week...

Very entertaining and clever

One of the most entertaining and pleasant to watch series I've seen. Itis a wonderful illustration of how paying attention to events, as wellas to people, can be an extremely powerful tool, and how most peopleare actually totally absent-minded compared to what they could be. Janeis brilliant as an ex-psychic who states that he was just pretending tohave psychic powers, and who now uses mental acuity and mind tricks toget ahead of any situation and quickly expose liars and criminals inhis own unique way, while having fun at it. The interactions betweenhim and Lisbon are so fun. It's not necessarily about Jane's incrediblyclever maneuvers being plausible or not. It's about the power of payingattention and understanding human behavior and emotions. Weather thiscan be done to this extent or not is not the point. The point is thatin any field, there are some who are way better than most, and Jane isthe best when it comes to figuring out deceit and camouflaged crimes.

Imagine

Imagine there was a show out there that sucked. Rhymes with Psych. Ithas a good premise, but it sucked. The lead actor was channeling TomCruise, and wasn't much of the sharing type. Would you mind if someother show with better actors took the premise and actually didsomething with it? Of course not.OK, Simon Baker is not doing all that much sharing right now, but he'strying to show that he, the character, is also selfish. And just a bitof an egomaniac. If the show starts to go the way of 'The Closer', with its insistenceon having Kyra in every single possible scene, then you may feel freeto stop watching it. I do still watch and enjoy 'The Closer', but ithas more to do with the rest of the amazing cast. They do so much withso little screen time.Edit - 3 months laterOK. I don't watch the show anymore because the show is just about him,and how clever and wonderful and whimsical he is. The writers don'teven bother dealing with plot anymore. He isn't in every scene, butsomehow you can picture him somewhere off screen strolling among thedaisies, and always being the smartest one in the room.I do like character based shows, but even Monk wore thin after a fewseasons. Monk has such a successful formula that they seem afraid ofhaving any character development. I thought 'The Mentalist' could have been a good show. Whoever createdthe show is probably a big fan of Derren Brown. I have seen at least 4or 5 of his routines on the show. What a shame.

Terrible!

This T.V show is a complete rip-off of USA Networks Psych, only withmore added drama. I find it awfully boring and depressing to watch. Ithas unneeded flashbacks at random unimportant places in each rip-offepisode. Do not even bother to watch this, unless you want a reason tokill yourself. Simon Baker should not have agreed to do this rubbishshow. Do not watch this, and do not be fooled by the other idiot userswho decided to give this show an 8 out of 10. I believe the creators ofthis show should quit writing T.V shows and choose a different line ofwork which they are actually good at Try my favorite show Psychinstead.

classy act!

I really love the show and it's characters. Jane is the soul of thisshow and Simon does the right justice to the character. When any of thecharacters reminds of him of the brutality that happened with hisfamily, the emotion he puts forward is awesome. He character is witty, sarcastic, funny and makes one glued to the seat. In season 3 whenconfronts Red John, you can notice the pain, agony in his face and thatI call "a wonderful act". Lisbon's character is an interesting one butmost often restricted to controlling her team. The chemistry betweenRigsby and Vanpelt is entertaining and nice. The Cho character isinteresting because he is cold, to the point and no non-sense guy. Iliked his character portrayal very much and you notice it gettingunleashed in on one of the episodes where he finds out reason for hisfriends death.Kudos, to Simon and Bruno Heller, for great presentation. 9/10.

Not a great show, but a good one

Patrick Jane is an unusually contradictory character, and despite theloss of his wife and kid, not very sympathetic. After all, he isn'thelping the police in order to atone for his past chicanery; he wantsrevenge and has said as much a few times (yet still keeps his job!).Before this show and House, it would have been almost unthinkable tohave a lead character be so manipulative, deceitful, closed-off,show-offy, selectively charming and arrogant. He's a sociopath ornearly. In most whodunit shows--the various, vacuous CSIs, Criminal Minds,etc.--the team members are less interesting than Jane and cohorts. Theyfunction as proxies for the audience, getting disgusted and darned madabout what the bad guys have done, and just itching to get into thatinterrogation room and fire off a contemptuous zinger or two! As ifmurder cases were made by sharp-tongued schoolmarms. The individual characters on such shows have, I suppose, theirbiographies, abilities, and quirks. But dialog can reveal character, and reveals that these teams are composed of people who all haveexactly the same Dwight Schultzy personality. Not one is blase, orcynical or burned out or coy or indirect --they're all seething, mouthy, self-righteous scolds. All the more-so when there are childvictims and they must channel the millions of agitated moms watching.By contrast, the interrogation scenes with Cho in the Mentalistactually follow the real-world practice of the officer's establishing afeeling of sympathy with the suspects' way of thinking. Tim Kang'sdeadpan says a lot with very, very little. He can be really funny too. I wish the show didn't play it so fast and loose with suggesting how itis Jane accomplishes the innumerable seemingly impossible things hedoes well. I certainly am not asking that the show to be allexplanation and exposition, like in Criminal Minds and CSI, whereteammates are always telling each other things they both already know. But just a few more hints here and there! This is in the end, a normal network series, albeit with a unique spin,well-worked out character dynamics and an intriguing, difficult leadcharacter. It isn't TV art on the level of Mad Men, The Sopranos, oreven the original Law and Order. But like all those shows, there ishigh percentage of vivid performances by guest actors. Some showy andpungent, some understated and non-actory--victories of naturalism andtonal control. Semi-regular Gregory Itzin is profoundly entertaining inthe first couple seasons. Great actor.

Rebuttal

Gee ManOWar, it appears your tastes don't go much farther than theobvious, else you'd recognize the original idea (a detective withhyper-tuned senses of observation) dates clear back to Sherlock Holmesand beyond.Psyche is no more original than Mentalist, but as any copyright lawyerwill tell you, you can't protect an idea, only the creative expressionthereof. IMO, The Mentalist is a nicely creative expression of a veryold and intriguing idea.I'l be curious to see where it goes, but it certainly beats the inanesilliness of Psyche, though I liked the show till this one came along.Who knows, it might not survive a season of scrutiny, either, but forthe time being it'll do...

A Touch of Genius

The Mentalist is a detective crime show, although very unoriginalconsidering the amount of shows of the genre on TV at the moment, theMentalist is original to the fact that it involves many in-depthpsychological aspects. Before I delve into the shows Pros, I'm going tostart off with the cons. First of all, as my title states, the show is 'A Touch of Genius', andmaybe too much in fact for the series to gain casual viewers. In orderto understand the show completely, one must concentrate really hard onevery single component of the show, and not only on the psychologicalaspects. For example, if a character is chewing nicotine gum, then thatshould be taken into account for the rest of the show as it may be animportant clue to uncover the mystery of the crime. With that said, theseries seems very scripted, as every single action does not fall undernormal human instincts, but just another jigsaw to complete the puzzle. Another flaw within the show is that the Mentalist is portrayed as the'perfect' character, capable of doing almost everything singlehandedly, which undermines the good supporting work of the rest of thecast. Rather than the Mentalist (Simon Baker) being an expert inpsychological issues, he is also an expert in everything else, such ascrime scene investigation and so forth. The hypnosis aspect of theseries is also a flaw, as it is performed too many times and althoughbelievable, it brings amongst itself many sceptics as well as criticsof the idea (as well as boost the idea that the Mentalist is a perfectcharacter). Now onto the pros: simply put, the Mentalist is full of ideas andconcepts that makes the mind think, and whilst watching the show, Ifound myself completely engrossed in each investigation and incapableof taking my eyes off the screen as to not miss anything. To watch theshow, one must focus a lot of concentration into it which makes theviewer feel really involved. The acting itself is very 'feel good' andcredit to Simon Baker for his performance on that area. Even in adepressing scene, Simon Baker can manage to put a smile on the viewer, making it a very 'feel good' sort of series. The psychological aspectsof the show is brilliant as well, as I find many of them verybelievable and true to human psychology. And as I indicated earlier ofthe flaw that Simon Baker seems to be the 'perfect' character of theseries, it is often brilliant to see him 'outplayed' by othercharacters in individual episodes as it is a rare occasion, and when itdoes happen it is a great scene to be remembered (and so a flaw isdeveloped into a positive). In conclusion, the show is very clever in its line of work, and oftenvery amusing and 'feel good' but don't expect to become a fan of theshow if you're just aiming to watch it casually. It's possible peoplemay like it from watching casually, but its unlikely. One question that may pop into your head maybe: Why choose Mentalistother from all the other detective crime shows out there? Well afterwatching the first series, the show seems to show a lot of promise andpotential, and its scenes very interesting (even giving ideas to how tobecome a Mentalist yourself). The plot is basic, but I have yet to findanother crime show which delivers individual scenes with as muchexpertise as this show. The Mentalist is currently one of my favourite TV series.

Great Start For THE MENTALIST

Okay, first let's get this out of the way, shall we? I've already heardthe naysayers griping about how this is a blatant rip-off of USA'sseries PSYCH. And you know what I think? I think that's an insult...toTHE MENTALIST. I have seen at least one episode of PSYCH, and I haveone question...WHY would you defend that show? It's horrible! I gave itone chance to impress me, especially since the episode I saw featuredone of my favorite actors, Tim Curry, as a special guest star. I don'tknow who I was more embarrassed for - poor Tim for choosing to makethat appearance, or for myself having to watch him slog through it.But enough about PSYCH...please. THE MENTALIST is the brainchild ofcreator/writer Bruno Heller, whom you might remember had something todo with a modest little HBO series called ROME. Well, Heller's knackfor great writing shines through here, with an opening scene in thepilot that will leave you open-mouthed with disbelief! Very few showswill catch your attention the way this one did and I loved it. I onlyhad one gripe...the casting. Should Stephen Culp and Zeljko Ivanek (whoappears later) really be playing any more villains? Please...let's getsome people in here whose very presences don't give the surprises away!Aside from that, it's a great introduction to the super-observantPatrick Jane (THE GUARDIAN'S Simon Baker), a 'consultant' to thepolice's Special Crimes division who once made his name as one of those"John Edward"-type TV psychics. But that was before he managed, in hisarrogance, to get the attention of a serial murderer known only as "RedJohn", whose grisly crime-scene trademark is a smiley face painted onthe wall in his victims' blood. When Jane calls John out on nationaltelevision...well, if you guessed that one of those smiley faces endedup at Jane's house where his wife and daughter were, you get the prize!I never watched THE GUARDIAN, though I am familiar with Simon Bakerfrom other things and I do like him. Plus he has great chemistry withRobin Tunney, who plays investigator Teresa Lisbon. And it's nice tosee Owain Yeoman from the unfairly canceled THE NINE (and most recentlyfrom TERMINATOR as the "first" incarnation of Cromartie) in anotherseries - one that will hopefully last for more than a single season!THE MENTALIST does come across as a blend of PSYCH-meets-COLUMBO, butwith a more conventionally handsome lead than Peter Falk, and muchbetter writing than PSYCH. Now that we know what drives the clever andtormented Mr. Jane, I hope we're treated in between other cases to hisongoing dust-up with the elusive "Red John."

The Mentalist is a hoot at times

I love this show. Simon Baker is Patrick Jane, a consultant to the CBI,California Bureau of Investigation, which is the state equivalent ofthe FBI. Jane's a former psychic who lost his wife and daughter to aserial killer who calls himself "Red Jack." Red Jack, according to thepilot, takes great sadistic pleasure in watching his victims watch himas he's killing them. Since the pilot, the shows have gotten better. The most recent, Carnelian Inc, was about a murder in a conglomerate.Jane always has a way to know who's lying and who's telling the truth. He called himself a psychic before the deaths of his wife and daughter. Then he went to work for the state of California. His boss is AgentTeresa Lisbon. The Mentalist is a hoot at times. You can't help butlaugh at the funny situations.

It is all about characters

I love these police team dramas. I am a big fan of Law & Order, butthey are not into character development. They care about the plots, andthey really make you think, but after years you end up knowing verylittle about the characters. Not so with The Mentalist. Plot is this series weak part. But, oncharacter development, both the two main characters, plus the threesecondary characters, and the "rest of the group" are very welldeveloped. And, both of the main characters can be said to be Hot,which is not bad, considering that neither of them tries to use theirhotness to manipulate the other characters, or the audience. Alsoimportant is that all characters have their own set of beliefs, andnuances, and behaviour, and even when there is a conflict because ofthose differences, those differences are treated with respect. My only problem with the series is that sometimes, the plots have ahole too many.

Superb and innovative

When i first saw the advert for the show it immediately grabbed myattention. This was not another Csi or NCIS, with the science andlogic. It breaks the mold by bringing in an untapped concept ofmentalism into the crime genre. The Mentalist Character himselfresembles a Sherlock character with his intriguing nemesis red john whoresembles a morialty figure. The show is different enough however tohold its own. The careful writing and brilliantly subtle body languagein peoples acting in keeping with Patrick Jane observations makes theshow unique. Simon baker is a genius in portraying the character sobeautifully, making him compelling and pleasurable to watch with hisfunny, childish and yet swarve representation. This is also backed upby the other regular cast members who although lack a bit of depth inthe first series come into there own with time. Cho who is brilliantlydry, Lisbon who is has 'an attractive intensity', Rigsby who's Ross andRachael affair with the stunning Van Pelt gives the audience somethingto root for. A Drama that despite having a standard format achievesgreat depth and hooks you.

Contains Spoiler? I think the writers of the show already spoiled everything anyway.

This show could have been created in a lab; Hollywood has had theformula for years. The writing is immature and most of the acting issecond-rate.My wife and I watched an episode last night in which Patrick Jane(played by Simon Baker) was being stalked by the son of a man who hadan affair then lost his job and wound up penniless, serving food in asoup kitchen when his wife demanded a divorce. The son blamed Jane fordestroying his life and tried to kill him with a bomb only to cause himto go blind. Here was the problem: The disgruntled son wormed his way into thepolice's confidence by poising as the new secret boyfriend (cliché) ofone of the female leads (Grace). It wasn't hard to figure out that the"boyfriend" was the villain.Of course, the moment Grace finds out who he really is she's on hercellphone with another female lead (Theresa) but doesn't BOTHER tellingTheresa that the name she just mentioned is the name of her"boyfriend." Grace simply closes her cellphone, turns around and findsherself looking a down the barrel of a gun. Right. It could happen? -NOT. What a clique. QUESTION: Why didn't the "boyfriend" use an alias. Is he some sort of dumb ass?Oh, but don't worry. The boyfriend is shot during the climatic momentin which Jane and Grace are trying escape; not by the naive securityguard (another cliché) that confronts them coming out of the buildingbut by Theresa who just happens to figure out the precise location ofthe trio (perhaps she heard the crashing sounds of cars as Jane - whois still blind - is trying to drive a car out of the parking lotbecause the villain only bother to handcuff Grace and not Jane?).More good news! Jane just happens to get his eyesight back during theepilogue - and they all lived happily ever after :)

Jane Can Name the Murderer in 60 Minutes - or Less

OK – I always like going out on a limb. The shows I do like, I getlambasted for and the ones I do not like – well let's just say I tendto be over-the-top. Every Thursday I watch Patrick Jane stumble throughcrime scenes – making snide remarks and dazzling perps and police alikewith Vulcan Mind tricks - tactics that would baffle Spock. There areshows I do not watch; some I watch because that is all that is on andothers I will wait all week long to watch. 'The Mentalist' falls intothe latter category (if it really is a category). I will also do thisfor 'Bones', 'NCIS', 'CSI NY' and 'Psych'. The show has borrowed fromother crime shows on TV (Psych being one of them) – but only slightly. The characterization is original (ok – maybe he tends to be Columbo-ishor maybe Munk-ish). The program is always fun to watch and has solidenough writing that the long term plot is well supported by the weeklycrime-solving. SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! – RED JOHN is not dead– the guy shot was a controlled troglodyte. Or maybe he was Red John? Ido not know – I do not know. I guess I will have to keep watching tofind out.

One of The best crime shows in Years

"The Mentalist" is one the best Detective shows if seen in years i putit up with "Crime scene Investigation" and a bit worse than "Law andorder" with "Patrick James" as our main protagonist who is a Played by"Simon Baker" who is a consultant for the CBI who uses Similar skillsas "Sherlock Holmes" to Solve his cases. The Supporting cast do give agood Performance not anything as good as "House Md" but they do give agood PerformanceNow onto the cases. The cases in The Mentalist are usually veryEnjoyable and they all make sense and you can usually guess who youthink it is and Most times will get it right. The problems with the show is that They make the CBI seem Kinda slow inthe case since Jane always gets it before them and they are Miles apartin know this is the Premise of the show but it does get annoying. The show is Probably one of the best Crime dramas right now and if youprefer things like Sherlock Holmes rather than Forensic science likeCSI Thats my First review so hope you enjoyed and could you please giveme feedback.

Enjoyable Crime Solver

I really like the show and it's actors. It stars a man who had a careeracting as a psychic who was just pretending for the money. He made themistake of catching the attention of a serial killer who retaliated bykilling his family. He recovered from a breakdown and now works as aconsultant to help the bureau catch the "bad guy" by using those sameintuitive, observant skills and really listening to what people do anddon't say. Simon Baker plays quite a multifaceted character that goesfrom playful to serious, whichever is called for and does it very well. The Mentalist has a good blend of being neither too dark like CriminalMinds or too lightweight like Psych, shows which I also watch.

What's with the word RED in every title

I LOVE this show. Yes, it has the same premise as Psych and Monk but itdoesn't use it in the same way. It is very real feeling. Psych borderson stupid at times (but I watch it). Gus is always mad at Shawn andalways shows contempt for him. Monk can and does drive you crazy (alsostupid at times, but I watch it, too). Mentalist gives me the best ofboth without the stupidity. I wish I had his talent. Any day. I alsothink he is very handsome but dark because of his family tragedy. Hehas issues but he does not let them get in the way of his gift. I ratethis show way above the other 2. So what is the link between the wordred in every episode title. I assume it must have something to do withRed John but I don't even know how he got the name Red John. Doesanyone know? Maybe I missed an episode early on but cant figure it out.If it has to do with Red John I have not even figured out how herelates to every story line. I don't believe he is mentioned in everyepisode. Was he?

So Annoying ...

Yes, yes, Patrick Jane is clever, etc etc, but it might as well be aone-man show as the rest of the team have done zilch in solving anycases. Sure, they've gone through the routine investigative work, butit is Jane, always Jane and only Jane that solves the case. I canunderstand it for the first few episodes to set up the character, butwe are almost to the end of the season and all we get is Jane smuglyflaunting his intellect and showing up not just the culprit/murderer etal, but also his colleagues every single time. I'm sure the rest of theteam, especially Lisbon and Cho, can do better than be constantlymanipulated by Jane. That's it, man, this is a one-season show for me.
