The Warrior's Way (1:40, R)  other: adventure, 3rd string, original,OSIT cynicsThe fantasy element here is that ANY person could be such an excellentswordsman that he can single-handedly take on a horde of 40 or morealmost equally skillful ninjas, then later do the same to a bunch ofbadass cowboys equipped with 6-shooters and a gatling gun. Also, there's the thing about his katana wailing with the souls of all thelives it's taken, such that it can be heard from half a continent awayby the adept's old sensei. Oh, yeah, and the flying ninja thing was alittle hard to swallow as well. But basically, the fantastic elements play 2nd fiddle to the story of alone warrior (Jang Dong Gun) who has refused his final assigned task:to kill the last member of a rival tribe, who happens to be an adorableinfant girl. Instead, he takes her with him and flees to America, wherehe eventually ends up in the desolate Western town of Lode, population506, home to, among other things, a half-built 4-story-tall ferriswheel, a bunch of carnies who seem to have been stranded here forupwards of a decade, half the sand in Arizona, and Kate Bosworth. The closing credits identify the lead characters as Yang and Lynne, butI don't recall hearing their names spoken aloud during the film itself.(Kate does refer to the mysterious stranger as Skinny.) Indeed, Yang'staciturnity is matched only by his constant blandness of expression. One suspects that the actor learned his few lines phonetically, thothey're delivered well enuf. The 2 stars resurrect Smiley's Chinese Laundry by day and learn sword-and knifeplay and the warrior's way by night. (For a desert town, theresure seems to be plenty of water.)Yang's clan, the Sad Flutes, cannot abide betrayal, so the aforesaidhorde of them track our lad across the Pacific and descend on Lodeshortly after über-villain The Colonel (Danny Huston) has returned towreak one of his periodic depradations upon this godforsaken sandbarren. Thus (shades of Good, Bad, and Ugly) we have a 3-waysplatterfest at the end, as the villagers finally gin up some gumption. There are many, many, many, many slo-mo scenes of single katana slicesproducing misty red clouds. Likewise many, many, many, many variationson sepia tones and odd camera angles, presumably demonstrating thedifference between Art and mere hack-and-slash escapism. And everycharacter is a character, if you know what I mean.It was mildly entertaining while it was happening, but it didn't takeitself seriously for a second, and neither should you.

Its not that thick on the drama(HmmPH! It used to be called story development but guess I'm just old). The movie still has some fun action moments but its not an all out action freak adrenaline rush(sorry junkies go watch Bleach or something). It has a good mix of actors including the guy who played the captain of the black pearl in the first Pirates of the Caribbean(Captain Barbossa). Look, its ninjas in a circus gone mad wild-wild west let your self get into it and have fun.

Jang Dong Gun, the South Korean movie star who's known for far morethan martial arts, has made his American blockbuster debut in "TheWarrior's Way", a film about the greatest swordsman in the world who isforced to flee his home. While not precisely a science fiction movie, there are just enough fantastical elements in this Old Western-styleaction flick to make it into the genre without crossing over into thehighly volatile "Sci-fi Western" category. And that definitely worksfor this movie. Here are some other things that work, and that don'twork.First, the plot. Yang, trained since childhood to be the greatestwarrior ever, is sent by his tribe to destroy their rivals; every lastone of them. However, when he meets the last one, a baby girl whomeventually is named April, he makes the decision not to kill her. Thismay seem like a cliché, but Yang's goal was never to become a murderer. As a boy, he saw his own father murdered. He was adopted, essentially, and trained by the leader of his tribe to become an assassin; but hisonly ambition is to become the greatest swordsman in the world, andthat ambition is not served by killing an innocent child. Knowing thathis tribe will target him next for his failure, Yang takes the littlegirl with him and sets course for America. The circus town (very nearly a ghost town) which is his destinationworks for this movie. He goes there because an old friend of his livesthere; well, lived there. Finding that his friend has passed away, heis persuaded by the townsfolk to stay and take over the laundry shopthat has been idle ever since. He even takes over the flower gardenthat no one had yet been able to properly cultivate. The colorfulcharacters, including the ringleader Eight-ball (Tony Cox), the drunkenRon (Geoffrey Rush), and the knife-throwing Lynne (Kate Bosworth),quickly befriend the wanderer from the Orient and his delightful littlecharge. Soon, Yang sees the advantages of, in the words of thenarrator, "making things grow instead of cutting them down". Again,it's a cliché that could easily have been mishandled, but that directorSngmoo Lee deftly utilizes. The fight scenes in this movie are spectacular. Yang's formercompatriots eventually find him, as you'd expect; and, as you'd expect,an incredible battle ensues. Jang Dong Gun is neither over-the-top norcompletely wooden as he plays the ruthless assassin cutting down hisfoes. The transition between the simple laundry man raising a littlegirl and the cool, calculating warrior is more seamless than you'dexpect. The ninjas aren't the only villains in this movie, either. Danny Hustonplays the Colonel, a man who drops in and out of the town periodically, taking whatever he wants each time. Commanding a force of what seemslike no fewer than a hundred Hell Riders, the various clowns andtricksters have little in the way of defense. However, Yang isn't theonly resident of this thriving circus town who hides a warrior side. When the final battle ensues, expect to see plenty of blood shed on allsides.Lynne's storyline doesn't quite work, though not for the reasons youmight think. There must always be balance between the main plot and thesubplots; specifically, the main plot must outweigh the others. Yang'sstory certainly outweighs that of the circus town itself. Theperformers want to make a complete transition from "traveling" to"stationary"; part of that effort is in the creation of the giganticFerris Wheel. However, both Yang's battle with his tribe and Lynne'swith the Colonel eventually come first, and no alternative is left tothe other residents but to fight when the time comes.Between Yang and Lynne, there is an undeniable attraction, and anunmistakable chemistry as well. By the time the final fight has begun,it's clear they've become equals, in their own way. That's fine, for aromance movie; but for a romantic subplot to this particular movie,it's not the best formula. Even Lynne's confrontation with heradversary ends up seeming more central to the movie than Yang's own.The "end" of the movie definitely works. I won't give too much away, except to say this: when you train your entire life as a killer, howcan you expect to simply walk away, even if all your enemies are dead? The movie is more bloody than I normally enjoy, and I don't think everystoryline worked as well as they could have. However, it was highlythrilling, and literally kept me on the edge of my seat during somescenes. Jang Dong Gun is my favorite part of the movie, quietlycharming and deadly, some times at the same time. Even if "TheWarrior's Way" itself doesn't take off, you can expect his future incinema to, on both sides of the Pacific. He certainly works for me.(Originally appeared at http://fourthdayuniverse.com/reports/ )

This movie is an action adventure movie set in a semi abandoned town inthe midwest. It blends in spaghetti western with sword play. The movie is done very stylishly with a lot of CG generated scenes, some of which looks very nice. The story is somewhat formulaic, an assassin sent to destroy a rivalclan stops at killing the last survivor, a baby girl. Instead he takesher on the run to prevent her (and his) death by his assassin clan. Thejourney takes them to the American midwest. As mentioned the movie is nicely shot. The gun battles look goodhowever the sword fighting scenes are CG created and are not very good. It's basically a rehash of 300, with the CG stop and go plus slowmotion fight scenes. Change the costumes and you are watching 300 on asmaller scale. Basically if you are expecting a martial arts, swordfight movie, this does NOT deliver.Acting is almost non existent except for the heroine and the drunk. Ourhero hardly speaks (prob 'cos he's korean and cant speak English). In summary I would say that despite the title, it is not a martial artmovie, its a stylishly shot action adventure movie.

The Warrior's WayToday, everything in America is made in China. But back in the 1800s,everything was made in America by the Chinese. And while the Asian drifter in this action movie didn't come to Americato build the Central Pacific Railroad, he is looking for a new life.Disobeying an order to annihilate his enemy clan, assassin Yang (JangDong-gun) takes the last surviving memberÂa newbornÂwith him across theocean to America.Putting down roots in a ramshackle burg ruled by ruffians, Yang makesshort work of the wild Westerners, which wins over the locals (GeoffreyRush, Kate Bosworth, Tony Cox).Later, they help him protect the child from his former clan who havecome to kill him.Though an Eastern swordsmen interacting with Western gunslingers soundsintriguing, the borrowed narrative, bungling actors andcomputer-generated action makes this regrettable.Instead, the sword-bearer should've established the first-ever saddlesore lancing company. As stated in another review, I'm convinced that the people giving itgood reviews on here, or anywhere, are people who had something to dowith this movies production. This movie has no redeemable factors to it. Bad acting, bad SFX, badstory, bad score...bad everything. How this movie got passed the pre-production phase is beyond me. Thismovie had to suck on paper as well.Fortunately, I was able to see the movie for free, but I still left themovie theater feeling ripped off. Everyone who had something to do withthis movie should be ashamed of themselves.Avoid this movie at all costs.

This review is from: The Warrior's Way (Amazon Instant Video) Turn down the volumne and wait for the action scenes and click to advance. Most of the movie is silly waste of time. I am sorely disappointed. I am surprized that someone bothered to make this film.

"The Warrior's Way" also known as "Laundry Warrior" is a film that cango either way. It is not going to be a very popular film because of itsrelease timing and the narrow demographic that it targets. The filmitself is very shaky with a horrible first half leading to asurprisingly strong rebound for the second half of the film. The filmbegins with a man named Yang (South Korean superstar Dong-gun Jang)becoming the greatest assassin of all time. His mission is to kill allof the people in his enemy's clan, however, when he looks the last babyin the face he cannot bring himself to do it. Instead he takes the babyand moves out west away from his old life to a small town named Lode.He looks for his friend in the town, but finds that he has died andthat the only 50 people inhabit the town, many of which are a part of atravelling circus. Yang hangs up his sword for good because he knowsthat if he uses it he will be found and killed by his old master thathe has angered for failing to kill the infant. During his stay he meetsa woman named Lynne (Kate Bosworth) and a drunkard named Ron (GeoffreyRush). Yang learns from them that the town has a past with a man calledColonel (Danny Huston) and his gang and that Lynne has a secretconcerning the Colonel. With two enemies now everything has been setinto motion for the epic climatic battle. Dong-gun Jang proves that he could be the next big martial arts actorto run across the screens of America as he tears up the screen in "TheWarrior's Way." Geoffrey Rush is great as usual once his character andthe story itself allow him to act. Together these two save the filmfrom failure and create an awesome ending action sequence lastingaround 30 minutes. They show that if they were given the chance earlierto let their characters shine and have more of the screen instead ofletting Kate Bosworth steal it, the film would have been a solid actionmovie.Kate Bosworth's character Lynne is almost able to ruin the movie byherself. Lynne has the personally equivalent to a spoiled littlefour-year-old girl. This has resulted in a very awkward performance byBosworth as she deals with a very weak screenplay. It is hard to tellif it is bad acting or if the writing needed some work, but thecharacter of Lynne and the disturbing back story that follows herreally puts a damper on the film. Also, the entire message of the filmis lost when Yang changes back to his old ways at the end of the filmand lives the life that he use to live. This would have been fine ifthis wasn't emphasized so much throughout the long and boring firsthalf of the film. This film is supposed to be an action ninja-fightingmovie, however, the first part of the film takes on a different andawkward identityThe MPAA rating states that the film is rated R for "Strong bloodyviolence" however it fails to state that there are some verydisturbing, highly sexual almost rape images. Therefore, it is not thebest film to see this Holiday season. With this in mind along with theweak first half of the film I cannot recommend seeing it unless you area big ninja movie fan. Even then I recommend waiting for DVD so you canfast forward through the drama to get to the highly entertaining ending

This review is from: The Warrior's Way (Amazon Instant Video) If only I could actually see it with all the buffering. I know I only have 3.0 MBps which I checked before commenting, but the computer is hardwired. I was not watching wirelessly. So do I need a higher DSL speed or does amazon need to fix its servers? Someone please let me know. You may be disappointed. I bought over 100 instant videos for rent and purchase but maybe I should go to vudu.com instead may I can actually watch it there. Oh yeah, no refund, lol!

From the beginning to the end the movie kept me on the edge of my seat.Since "kick ass and avatar" I haven't felt this way. Choreography ofthe fighting scenes, overall editing, and the directing were fantasticand flawless. As an Asian I really appreciated the fact that the movieattempted to break some of the main stream movies norm. When was thelast time we saw a white girl falls in love with an Asian guy. I can'tremember. I personally got tired of Asians portrayal of kung fufighting emotionless, not full, plastic characters like Jet Li andJackie Chan do. Yes this movie is all about kung fu and flying. Howeverit has well developed characters that painted the picture more vividly.I want to see a main stream movie with an ordinary Asian maincharacter. And this movie had some progress towards my wish.

I absolutely loved this movie. It's one of those I wanted to go backand see again the next day. Definitely buying it (and I don't like manymovies enough to buy them). I like that it has tonnes of effective symbolism (would make a GREATfilm for a film study) and I love the western/samurai cross. Finally amovie with the right amount of gore! It's so hard to find a movie withthe right amount of gore. It's exciting without going overboard. Ireally liked the ending as well. Although the sword action could've been better visually; it wasaccurate. The story line a little predictable (but, really, what HASN'Tbeen done already but easy enough to follow. I would recommend this a movie to watch alone or with your someone. Thebalance between passion and action is perfect.

I am not really a fan of Jang Dong-gun, but that is the main reason Idecided to watch this movie. Since he is a popular actor in SouthKorea, despite the negative reviews it's been getting the trailerdidn't seem that bad. Although you can't judge a movie from thetrailers alone. Also because it has Geoffrey Rush in it, so thought themovie would be good since he decided to play a role. The cross betweenmystical east and cliché west elements worked alright and goes in a bitof a cartoonish direction. Maybe it's because of the cheap CGIbackgrounds. The movie has some good ideas but the execution is donepoorly. The plot is basically about a very skilled swordsman gettingsome humanity within after keeping the baby of his enemy instead ofkilling her and meeting certain folks. The conflict kicks in when hispast comes to disrupt the peace while also having to deal with one ofthe town's girl's haunting past. So yeah besides the clash of easternand western in some aspects, the plot is cliché and predictable for themost part. The bonding parts which take up most of the running time wasdull is dull and boring to watch. During the whole time I wasconstantly just wondering when the action is going to kick back in. Theconnection between the plot and the action sequences work though, infact when the main action sequences kick back in it's non stopentertainment. Mainly because the action sequences are choreographedvery well and very entertaining to watch.6.4/10

There must be a 1000 paid people who have posted positive things on thecinematography and beauty of this movie. In short, you're all wrong. This movie was a complete waste of what could have been somethinginteresting. The trailer for this movie was by far better than themovie itself. In the trailer, I thought this was going to be some kindof Ninja Scroll meets Trigun meets Kate Bosworth. However, all we gotwas computer generated crap. The action was absolutely terrible. There were no smooth sequenceswhere you actually believed the character could do any of things he wassupposed to be able to do. The initial duo at the beginning against thegreatest swordsman ever had no flair, no drama and no beauty. The swordfight against his clansman and the master at the end again fellcompletely flat. If you came into this movie thinking that maybe theacting will suck and you'll get tons of good action sequences, thinkagain.

It blows my mind how you can go through IMDb and see movies that areactually good that have lower ratings compared to something like this, which is just a freaking joke! Who is rating this and giving it thesegood reviews? This movie is complete and utter garbage. They spent over40 Million on this and it is has only grossed a little over 11 million. This is not a case of some movie being before its time; the numbers arefar more of an accurate estimation of this film than what is obviouslypeople manipulating the ratings on this site. It's almost as though thestudio and makers think that audiences are so dumb that you can justwrite that it is good and that everybody will automatically like itjust because . . .People be real please! Even the fight sequences in this are bad and thewire rigging looking like a bad stage adaptation of "Peter Pan." Thesupposed "gorgeous" cinematography just looks like bad CGI backgrounds.I don't even want to get into the acting in this, nor the scriptbecause I'll wind up vomiting recalling the scenes. It's almost likechunky puke coming up in your mouth, while your mouth is duct-taped andyou are forced to let it go down a second time. This could also be goodmetaphor for the makers and friends trying to silence the actualcritical responses to this turd by writing their own "shiny" reviewsand trying to push the real ones to the back of the pile.

In Sngmoo Lee's directorial depute he as the honor of directing AcademyAward® Winner Geoffrey Rush, and Kate Bosworth, Danny Huston andInternational Korean sensation Jang Dong Gun, from the highest grossingKorean film "Friend" star in this overly stylized martial arts westernmash-up.After a lifetime of training as a assassin or soldier in some grandbattle between families, the world's most dangerous swordsman/samuraiYang (Jang Dong-gun) with the exodus of his homeland and well-trainedobedient warrior clan, to start a new life in the American West after achange of heart when practically single-handedly slaughtering hisrival's army, our hero spares a newborn child. Yang and the orphan findthe beat-down town of Lode, "The Paris of the West" a home for outcast, circus performers, an old drunks (Geoffrey Rush), and a knife-thrower(Kate Bosworth) who is looking for revenge & redemption from "TheColonel" (Danny Huston) a sadistic rapist for killing her family as achild. Yang takes Kate Bosworth as his student. Soon "The Colonel" andhis gang wage an all-out war against the town. "The Warrior" Yang mustlead the town into an epic battle. Meanwhile Yang's old master and hisarmy of Ninjas hear the call of Yang's weeping sword, "yes you heardright, the weeping sword". Let me explain, when the sword is unsheathedthe swords weeps for all the lives it took. Lame as all hell. The film begins as cartoonish as it ends; with over the topchoreographed fight sequences and gravity-defying stunts and over thetop cg, annoying coolness, fans of 300 will love this film. I'mconsidering on starting a campaign in which studios are forced toreveal the percentage of cg to practical effects on all releases, Ithink people will be surprised on the number. I want to know if I'mwatching cartoon or not. We are constantly reminding that the actorsare interacting in front of a green screen, taking us out of the film."Or am I the only one that cares" Very much influences by comic bookand video game action, not to mention cheesy video game duologue whichseemed to be written by a 14 year old or a video game designer thatknows very little about storyteller just regurgitating images and linesthey thought sounded cool in other movies. Fortune cookie freshmaneastern philosophy one liners. If there is a silver cg lining in this disgrace of a western is thenarration of the great Geoffrey Rush, with his worn growl of a voicewhich acts of story teller to this thing called a film. Geoffrey Rushis one of the most honest actors still working, and yet again he iswasted in another bad movie. Kate Bosworth a true beauty and wonderfulactress and like Rush just wasting away in bad movies. Our maincharacter Yang (Jang Dong Gun) played with a great stockiness', aclassic character type "man with no name" a stereo type that exist in agood number of westerns. A story told a thousand times over  the hardman trying to make amends putting down his weapons taking the straightand narrow, only to be pulled back into the world he is trying toescape. With a bit of Sergio Leone campyness  without that small sense Leone'srealism this is truly a Jonah Hex companion piece, at least in samelevel of quality. Trying to play a bit on the surrealism of Kung FuHustle but missing badly on the entertainment value.A little past midpoint the film screeches to a halts with a meanderinglaughable pointless series of scenes with Geoffrey Rush and JangDong-gun having "deep thoughts" at the desert garden which now growsbeautiful foliage.Dead horses on the battlefield attempting to evoke Akira Kurosawa "forshame Sngmoo Lee , for shame". Jang Dong Gun is a true talent and hasall the potential of crossing over to an American audience with theright role choices; this is diffidently not the right vehicle for him.He has great look about him and a natural ease on camera, he has beencompares to a younger Chow Yun-Fat, yes unfair and a little racist, notevery new young Asian actor that has moderate success in the US shouldfeel that measurement. At the conclusion and what should have been most climactic scene in themovie  with the grand, epic long awaited show down with the greatestswordsman in the world and the teacher that taught him everything heknows, once again the films crescendo completely breaks down with ameaningless flashback. And the movie is over the after the fact caperis laughable, I'll just let you witness that on your own. If your not14years old you should not like this movie -Will- nerdvanainc.com

...well if you can exclude me.Speaking critically this has got to be one of the most derivative, clichéd and incomprehensible movies I have ever seen. The dialog isstilted, the acting could use some work, and the plot is incrediblyredundant of the typical ninja films. On the other hand, on the entertainment scale, this film is trulybonkers, insane, you get the picture. You know from the beginning whena quote floats on the screen comic-book style, you know this is a filmnot to be taken seriously. You have a ninja warrior with a baby travelto the Wild West where he encounters a small town full of weird andmysterious people (it doesn't help that most of the town's citizens arecircus performers, to add to the insanity). This concept is quiteunusual in my honest opinion, and it looks like Korean writer/directorSngmoo Lee clearly had a blast in creating his "epic".The film looks like it was ripped out from a Japanese shonen manga andthen stapled together with an American Western comic book, and you getthis insane potpourri of ninjas, cowboys and clowns (yes, there aregun-toting clowns). The whole movie is just pure insanity that you'llwonder when the aliens, robots and pirates are going to show up. It ispulp, and it is unabashedly proud of it.The actors don't really do much, they more like phone in theirperformances, but in a movie like this, I don't think this is going tomatter. The lead, Korean superstar Jang Dong-gun gives a solemn, emotionless and mysterious (often mistaken as wooden) performance asthe hero, and he has quite an aura around him during the actionsequences. Kate Bosworth is kinda campy in her performance, with thestereotypical cowgirl accent and whatnot, but she looks sexy at times.Geoffrey Rush and Danny Huston seem to have a fun time hamming it upwith their roles, and Tony Cox phones it in with another funnyperformance, as usual. However it was a surprise to see Hong Kong actorLung Ti of "A Better Tomorrow" fame as the main villain, it was nice tosee a foreign actor of his caliber in a movie like this.Yes, the script has problems, most notably pacing problems at thebeginning. Yes, it is unoriginal and wooden at times. And yes, thespecial effects could look much better. But for what it's worth, it isinteresting in a crazy, bizarre, twisted way, and it is solidentertainment for those who are willing to try. It's a love it or hate-it type of popcorn movie; definitely not for the thinking kind.Overall rating: 51/100

Long story short - the script is for anime, its just that someonedecided to actually film it. You will see a lot of blood, impossiblemoves, hyper speed and generally stuff that is typical for animemovies. If you are an anime fan, this is your movie - pure action atits finest, full of violence and flying limbs. There is no big, deepmoral, or moments that make you think "Wait, what?" its just straight"A man gotta do what a man gotta do" eye candy type of movie. Theactors play well and the effects are fine except that moment when afair's wheel exploded and there was so much dust like it was made notout of metal, but of sand. But it sure is worth the 2 hours. Watch it,you wont regret it!

With the build up of this movie, I was expecting an enjoyable movie. But in fact I ended up seeing a waste of my money. The story line wasboring and absolutely absurd. The special effects were poor andunbelievable.Kate Bosworth was the only redeeming factor and person who actuallyacted in this movie. It isn't too often you witness people actually walking out of the moviebut it happened with this one. DO NOT waste your money. I won't evenwatch it when it comes out on Blu-Ray either.Again, I can stress this enough. This movie is not worth the moneyseeing at the theater or when it comes out on DVD/Blu-Ray

It's one of those movies where we westerners (Americans) are supposedto marvel at the magic and mystery of eastern values which ourprimitive cerebrum can never hope to comprehend.America is depicted as a circus with no hope and no direction being runinto the ground by a ruthless overlord. (Yeah, it hits a little closeto home) Asian culture is depicted as highly evolved and overtlyruthless. They're shown destroying themselves and everything they lovethrough their own ferocious and unbending will. There are a few really cool sword fighting scenes, and a lot of ho-humscenes, and a few really bad scenes. The sword fighting scenes do wear thin by the end of the movie.Kate Bosworth does a good job in this and brings some life and vivacityto counter the stone cold Asian's never ending death stares. Her actingisn't exactly great, but she has a lot of spirit.Being nice, it was almost watchable. Realistically, it sucked.

What do you get when you take 'Unforgiven' and 'Ninja Assassin' and theworld's greatest actor (Geoffrey Rush) and put them together? Anawesome movie!!!A young warrior seeks to be the greatest swordsman ever, but refuses tokill the baby he is ordered to kill. He takes the baby to the AmericanWild West and hides among a group of struggling circus performers and adrunk ex-bank robber. Cowboys want revenge on the woman in the town andthe clan wants the warrior dead and the battle begins as they all endup in the town at the same time. There are a few graphic scenes, butnot as much as other Martial Arts movies like Kill Bill or NinjaAssassin. Geoffrey Rush (Ronald, the drunk ex-robber) is an awesomeactor who gave a great performance with some doses of humor! He is NOTcapable of making a lousy movie. He did an awesome job. The storyline was great and the acting of all was excellent. There wassuspense, humor, sadness, and love. The R rating is well-earned, asthis is NOT for younger audiences. Now... go see this... right now. Run... don't walk to go get this movienow.What... you're still here...???
